Now, I still don't think much of the music, but I've just seen the video for "The Irony Of It All" and I'm impressed - very clever (if musically deficient) song...

Musically okay song with overbearing, snotty lyrics you mean.

It's brilliant.

No it isn't. Admittedly he's trying to parody both stances somewhat (surely he can't actually consider an idiot like that cool?), but certainly the sympathies lie with the smug, whiny, annoying pro-drugs besserwisser twat rather than the extremely crudely-drawn drinker. Possibly the most annoying personality type ecounterable in real life (and I secretly suspect Mike Skinner is quite a bit like that).

I don't think he thinks he's cool, he's trying to portray that he's harmless - annoying or otherwise.

He's pointing out the hypocricy of modern society. Very well.

He's clearly an open invitation to severe and possibly fatal violence.

Bollocks. The stance of the drinker is a crude caricature at best, and a complete lie at worst. As is the stance of the student, come to think of it. No, he's doing the usual demagogic round of ill-argued, one-sided cleverdick bollocks, while glorifying patronising snotty idiots.

You've recently openly praised music that you've admitted is blatantly homophobic, and yet you're whining about a song pointing out - quite rightly - that the vast majority of weed users aren't doing any harm to anyone?

I've got nothing against music glorifying drugs per se, it's the glorification of poly-like twats I can't stand.

But you've got to love the bit when his pizza arrives. Very well observed comedy in my opinion.

I've not seen the video.

I mean the words to the song. The student character's pizza arrives complete with an unordered topping. He appologises to the delivery guy for not ordering clearly enough and goes on to mention how he doesn't mind picking it off.

Ah, so the problem is you don't agree with him. :D

Both sides are caricatures, of course, they are the other sides view of each other. Heard those things hundreds of times from different people at different times over the years. Doesn't mean they are right, just that he's observed them right.

*sigh* remember when you were trying to make us listen to the streets and we said he was shit? Those were the days.

He told us they were the future of music, I still think they are shit and they will be just as shit in years to come.

anyway if it is shit, it is the good shit, so i totally agree, matt. it will be just as good shit in years to come

btw this post just proves why the music forum is so crap, 'i love #
no, # is crap, but haven't you heard by # , yeah but # is still crap'

wank wank wank wank

no one cares, if you can't explain your opinion why express it?

la la la la la la la la

i like the streets because his lyrics are extremely clever and his music is very diverse, if within a certain style...

I always make that mistake, The Streets just sounds too much like a band name.

I can't explain why I don't like him, I just don't connect with that crappy talking over shit thing he's got going.

I don't like The Streets because Mike Skinner is a wanker.
