Hmmm... interesting.

We had a similar discussion when trying to work out the Sonic Undermind setlist for the last gig.

Have to start and end on a killer, not sure it's the same for an album though.

Yeah, depends on the length of the album, and likelihood of it being played all the way through. Usually 2nd/3rd, and/or last. It's easiest with two best songs.

most albums have the best songs at the beginnning.

The 'first side' of the album as it were

This makes sense from a sales point of view, if you put an album on to listen to it and the best song is at the end maybe you never bother listening that far

but then not first either, often some kind of intro track these days

Interesting results. I think putting your best track first or last is a brave decision, but one that can work wonderfully. Second is a safe option, not over-committed but without patience. Tracks in the middle seem to have more trouble standing out, but if the Beatles did it, I’m cool with it. According to the poll, anywhere in the second half of the album that isn’t the end is a bad decision, and yet plenty of artists do so.

I say second or third last, as long as the album has strength in depth.

The second track does not necessarily have to be the best one, but I do feel it has to build up in terms of intensity from the first one. You don't wanna drain your audience with your first track and then leave them hanging until the last couple of tracks, but then nor do you want to start off too quietly at the risk of not engaging your audience at all.

Actually, I'll do a subjective statistical analysis of my small collection of travelling albums and see where my favourite songs usually end up. Wait...

It depends on the first one. If the first one is brilliant then the second track doesn’t necessarily have to be better, just different enough to keep the interest.

Right, after going through my traveller's box I've found that the best track is #3 in no less than 26% of cases, the next closest being #1 in 16% and #2 in 13%. Also, The last track is "it" in 10% of cases, as is for some reason the sixth track.

You should make it an annoying hidden track, at the very end of the album, on the same track as the last song but with about 10 minutes of nothing between them.

OR

You could make it hidden after a hidden track. Put an atrocious song about 2 minutes after the last track, then 2 minutes after the hidden track put on the best song!

I wonder why no one has done this before!!

But if your penultimate track goes into the reflective one straight away it might be overwhelming losing the reflective one's power entirely. Which means you need to put a languid triviality in between to quiet things down.

So, according to the latest schematic we have:

1. Opener with Punch!
2. Entirely different track
3. Very Good Track
.
.
.
10. Best Track
11. Relatively trivial track with decent buildup
12. Letout

Debaser: That's quite uncanny, on the latest CD I bought all of the songs are written by one person...except for one track, #8, which was written by the drummer. :eek:

Cracker had Eurotrash Girl as a hidden track on Kerosene Hat and because of its poularity it was released as a single

Albums on which the best tracks are hidden: "London Calling" by The Clash (well, not anymore), "My Crew, My Dawgs" by TOK.

For a while I had a theory that the best track was always the 4th one.
Then I bought some new albums.
3rd or 4th sounds about right to me
