While awaiting the arrival of a decent pc this weekend, wich will bring me back in business to play IL2, CFS3, Frontline Attack War over Europe and Medal Of Honour: Allied Assault, I have been playing Civ 3 for the first time. With all the bad reactions everywhere I must say it wasn't all that bad. It's a lot like Civ 1, but better looking, smarter AI. I know a game should be more than a purtier upgrade of the original, but maybe it wasn't a disappointment because I didn't expect much of it.

So tell me what sucks about it so much so I can bitch with you all.

It's definately a good game, it's just not the kind of progression a lot of the fans were looking for I guess. I'd play it again but I just havent had the time to play such a game for a while. (in fact I played Colin Mcrae 2 for 20mins, 2 weeks ago.. :()

I found it still suffers from the SMAC/CtP disease of being a real grind after a while into the game.

IL2? The only thing that cries out to me, as a biochemistry graduate, is interleukin 2...what does it really stand for?

There's nothing *wrong* with it, but there's nothing about it that makes it stand out as great. Though RC has a point about the late game - surely there'd be SOME progression in removing that kind of management in three major progressions. Even Civ2 has the ability to define a template for autobuilding. If you could do that in Civ3 beyond the limit-of-10 queueing (which you have to set up manually, by hand, for each city - even SMAC let you save build queues!) it'd go a lot quicker. Plus an option to REALLY ignore unit movement... then it'd be quicker.

Ilyushin. The IL-2 (often called Sturmovik) was a famous Soviet WW2 bomber model.

The IL-2 was a single-engine attack plane somewhat similar to the German Ju-87 dive bomber. Unlike the 87, the IL-2 had 2000 pounds of frontal and cockpit armor to protect the crew and engine from ground fire. It was faster than the 87, but not in a class with fighters. AFAIK, the IL-2 was not designed to dive on targets, but approach at low altitude and attack with rockets and cannons.

IL 2 is annyoing. I downed 2 german plans and bombed all targets - and the autopilot gets shot down by Flak.

Maybe it's realistc, but things like that can kill a game :(

Definitely. That's why games need to be unrealistic sometimes.

What fun would a war game be if you spent hours sitting in the back of an APC and then got blown up by artillery.
