Cool. I sent it yesterday. I'm sending three more this morning...

Mixe? Alex? Got your CDs?

Funkodrom

Post hadn't come by the time I left for work. I'll find out this evening.

I am a little scared though

First impressions....

Can LWP4 be "Listen without punk?". A spot more diversity would be great.

Oh yes. Call me "Mr Optimistic" but I suspect that everyone's minds were made up on "Holiday in Cambodia" long ago. Provost/Bursar- I suspect this was your joint choice.

The tracks I suspect are Snapcase and Sean's stick out like sore thumbs.

Whoever included "I know where Syd Barret lives" gets a big snog from me.

Lazarus and the Gimp
30-10-2002, 19:42:03
So do I just slap my reviews up here or PM them to Johan?

Scabrous Birdseed
30-10-2002, 19:52:08
PM them to me. It'll be a bigger surprise for the recipients of they get all their reviews in a little neat package.

I'll try to make up some instructions, including possibly Sending The Collective Total Of Reviews To The Submitter So That He Can Evaluate Them. It'd be nice but hard to co-orninate...

"Can LWP4 be "Listen without punk?". A spot more diversity would be great. "

You don't say.

"Oh yes. Call me "Mr Optimistic" but I suspect that everyone's minds were made up on "Holiday in Cambodia" long ago. Provost/Bursar- I suspect this was your joint choice. "

Nope. :D

Really? Bet it was the Idlewild track in that case.

30-10-2002, 19:57:29
Not that one either. :)

Lazarus and the Gimp
30-10-2002, 20:00:12
There's a really nasty power-pop track lurking in there. My trousers nearly turned into tight stone-washed jeans spontaneosly.

Provost Harrison
30-10-2002, 21:09:12
No, I guarantee you all the 'nasty power-pop tracks' belong to Iain Lindley ;)

Scabrous Birdseed
30-10-2002, 21:20:34
I think you'll find those are pop-punk, not power-pop. Although one of them is borderline.

The Shaker
30-10-2002, 21:23:53
And what are the factors which decide the category they belong to?

Scabrous Birdseed
30-10-2002, 21:27:48
Um, Power-Pop has like, twangy byrdsy guitars and power chords, pop-punk has that mode of voice and the repeated chord-type riffies. And stuff.

The Shaker
30-10-2002, 21:31:21
I don't know how you do it, but that's now perfectly clear in my mind :D

I'm up to track 14 now. I'm going to make guesses as to who some of the tracks are by. Only two that I recognise the songs so far.

Funkodrom
31-10-2002, 11:43:29
If they told you that it wouldn't be a surprise would it.

Track 14 is great though. Was a pleasant surprise hearing that on there, haven't heard it for ages. Now I've got the CD I don't want to wait 2 weeks to see the first report. I understand Johan's keeness.

Now, is that a 100-0, or is me saying that was a rhetorical question a 100-0 for you? So tricky.

Funkodrom
31-10-2002, 12:04:18
I wasn't looking for a 100-0 so you can say what you want. :D

I don't think he is.

I know what song Laz is talking about and I know what Scabby is talking about and I think they are different.

There are more songs on this that I recognise than I thought there'd be.

I'll make you a copy. K_G too if he wants one.

Scabrous Birdseed

That was a response to Rich not to Laz. None of Iain's tracks are particularly power-pop really.

Showing my knowledge of punk &c., I have noticed that some of these sound like tracks from THPS and, in fact, one is a track from the first in the series (I’d have to play it to be sure).

Funkodrom
31-10-2002, 14:03:27
 True! There's another by a band that did one of the songs on THPS2 soundtrack as well. :D

I couldn’t agree more. I don’t think I’ll be writing much for a lot of these tracks.

Oh, and I think PB’s tracks stand out more than mine. You may have got me wrong.

Funkodrom
31-10-2002, 17:08:21
I wonder if yours are as obvious as they appear or if someone who's music taste I know less about put the ones I think are yours on there and you went for something random.

It's a great double album.

Scabrous Birdseed
31-10-2002, 17:11:37
The more I listen to this CD the less I like it. Even the good tracks, and there are a few, get bogged down in some sort of general MTV-Rock blandness. It starts to all sound the same, it's scary.

Funkodrom
31-10-2002, 17:19:31
Hmmm...

Weird, it seems really varied to me. I've ripped the two CDs onto my harddrive at work so I can listen to it all as one continuous 46 track album.

Mind you bearing in mind most posts in this music forum are you telling other people that the music they like is shit it's not surprising you won't like a lot of it.

Scabrous Birdseed
31-10-2002, 17:33:29
All of it (well, except the Death Metal track, four of my tracks and the long Jazzish thing) sounds like the sort of demicommercial bland stuff that dominated the eighties and nineties with white, middle-class anglosaxons. I realise the demographic is skewed, but come on: there's almost no 50s-60s-70s music, little lo-fi, little electronica, and practically no black music. Also there's no extreme music at all, no strange art-rock, no production outside the normal bounds.

And ultimately, only one track on here has grabbed me as brilliant so far, which is two less than on Mike's CD.

Sean
31-10-2002, 17:43:53
Was it one of your tracks?

Scabrous Birdseed
31-10-2002, 17:44:58
Okay, seven tracks then. :D :D :D

Sean
31-10-2002, 17:45:04
I know what you mean, though. There are a lot of tracks on there (mine included) that have good bits and then some awful bits, and there are plenty of tracks that are just nondescript.

Scabrous Birdseed
31-10-2002, 17:46:59
Yes. Many of the tracks I quite like sort of degenerate into Garbage/Bryan Adams occasionally.

Lazarus and the Gimp
31-10-2002, 17:53:18
One potential reason for the selections is that tracks were chosen in the hope that other people would have liked them. I could easily have picked highly extreme and bizarre choices, but I went with stuff I thought would be accessible, whilst still being a track I thought was great.

I ripped it, too. Makes more sense that way. Id din’t compress it, though, because at least two tracks have gone CD -> Ogg/MP3 -> CD, so going back to Ogg/MP3 would compress the already compressed. Ugh.

So far I've listened only to CD1 in any depth, and there's quite a bit that I like.

Same here. Obviously with the exception of a couple of the tracks, I also tried to blend in with the rest of the compilation. Perhaps because everyone has tried to blend in and go for stuff that the average person is percieved as potentially liking, the subtle differences that do exist don't come to the fore in the same way...

Yes. Five tracks totalled 13:47, and I added another thee-minute track when one of the copies of the shared track had to go. Note that the second CD is 77 rather than 75 minutes long. :D

I have to admit to liking CD1 better than CD2. :) And I don't hate much of this, there's loads of good-but-not-great stuff...

Sean
31-10-2002, 18:00:04
CD1 is better. The really irritating tracks seem to be on CD2.

Seriously I think that's probably got a lot to do with it.

re: 50s-60s-70s music

It never crossed my mind to put anything old on there. I wanted to put new stuff that people probably hadn't heard before.

re: And ultimately, only one track on here has grabbed me as brilliant so far, which is two less than on Mike's CD.

Quite a few songs on that CD were specifically designed to try and find some songs that you liked from genres you didn't. My choices were a lot less diverse this time, but then I had a lot less tracks to play with.

Funkodrom
01-11-2002, 12:09:26
OK you are right. It's not very varied.

The Shaker
01-11-2002, 12:16:51
Certainly you could lose a lot of it (in terms of variety)
However I didn't see the point in picking something strange that I didn't like, just for effect.
