A new multiplayer mod is available for RtCW here (http://www.the-wildwest.co.uk). Takes me back to the original Wolfenstein where in one mod all the guards were smurfs and the alsatians turned into poodles. However, these guys have taken things quite a bit further.

The background story at the site explains that it is "Set in the later half of the 19th century around the Western states of America bordering Mexico. A land plagued with disputes, lawlessness, gunfights and some of that periods most gruesome characters." (sounds just like the USA today really)

"An ex-Mexican army captain turned bandit, driven by a personal vendetta, has formed a mob of some of the most ruthless Mexican bandits to sweep a reign of terror through the land."

Full details are on the site but you get a choice of playing the good cowboy or the bandit. There are only three maps at the moment but these guys have taken a knife and fork to all aspects of the game including weapons, hit reactions, voices, skins (obviously).

This looks to be really well done by two people in their spare time and, for those of you into MP (i.e., with a faster connection than me), well worth checking out - especially as they have promised to buy us all a beer.

Sounds good. I'll check that out.

It took them 5 months apparently. I'd be really interested to see if it plays as well as it promises.

Potential problem will be finding game servers for it with people on.

True. I understand from the website that it is on several - one of the authors has registered here and he can no doubt direct to an appropriate one (he is UK based).

Hi there! Just been reading some of the reviews on this site. I love this place, nothing beats a reviewer giving their honest opinion....and then everyone slagging him and each other off! So long as you don't say our mod sucks! :D I certainly going to think twice about getting MTW!

Anyway! When you install the mod and fire it up the server list will filter out any non WW servers. So you don't have to scroll through looking for a server playing it!

We had around 12 servers running last night and at one point had 100 people, which is pretty smart considering we released two days ago. There were enough good servers to get a good game with good pings.Which is...good. What a good diversity of vocabulary I have.

Catch ya later

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 15:18:12
Well that's... good. ;)

I'll have a go on it at the weekend if I can draw myself away from Pro Evolution Soccer 2.

Maybe we can do you a review.

No. He just put the info into submissions asking if we might want to run a news item. I checked out the site and thought it was well worth a mention over here. Simple as that.

Oh, and he did include the magic words "buy beer".

i think i've deleted rtcw off my machine...

anyway between UO, pes2 and my ongoing counter strike commitments (which i have been sorely remiss in), then no not for a while if at all.

Does sound cool, though, i'd like to see it.

BoltyBoy,
Has anyone considered that Mexicans and Mexican-Americans might not be too pleased as being characterized as being,
"An ex-Mexican army captain turned bandit, driven by a personal vendetta, has formed a mob of some of the most ruthless Mexican bandits to sweep a reign of terror through the land."?
I hope that you are prepared for some negative comments.
Just a heads up from a bleedin' liberal.
:cute:

BoltyBoy
25-10-2002, 17:26:59
Haha I plan to be more controversial than that with future maps. The beauty of doing something for free...you can do what you want and if people don't like it they can play something else!

No seriously, I'm just trying to create a plot that could be historically accurate/interesting. Doesn't matter how PC we want to be, you can't change the past! Or at least you can't change the past depicted by Clint Eastwood.

Or not. :D

DS: Boltyboy is a modder, not a developer. That means what he does is like the CG reviews - on his own time because he wants to. There's no money involved. Developers are evil, Modders are good.

Besides, we hit that level of corruption ages ago, when I got a free 6 month LSN subscription for doing a review:). While I didn't exactly drool over it (I'm not that cheap) I think they definitely got their money's worth just in LSN subs from other CGers.

Funkodrom
28-10-2002, 09:57:24
Yep. LSN was fun for a while, plus those developers were cutting out the evil publishing companies (the real villains of the piece) which is always good.

I didn't get round to playing this at the weekend although it's downloaded and installed. Damn Warcraft 3 taking up 6-8 hours a day at the weekends.

Darkstar
28-10-2002, 10:05:35
Shining1, I know he's a modder. I was making a (bad) joke.

Although I hadn't realized you had gotten 6 months for your review. Humm... how many subs did you sell? Quite a few posters did go LSN crazy for a while...

Funkodrom
28-10-2002, 10:27:19
I think it was just a standard subscription he got, they were all 6 months.

Subscriptions... Me, Shakey, Snapcase, Sean, Guy, LadyRachel... at least.

Shining1
28-10-2002, 12:45:15
Yep, essentially they let me play on their servers for free, so the oppotunity cost for them was very low. And they got some honest feedback about everything.

My sub has expired now like everyone elses. I still like what they're doing, though, but Rachel and I are going through the instinctual 'no money after getting married' phase and they've upped the price now to $25...

Funkodrom
28-10-2002, 12:51:45
How different is it to the "no money before being married" phase?

Venom
28-10-2002, 12:59:03

Funkodrom

Wow. And to think we thought that Mike and Ric might actually be underrepresentative of the intelligence of the average Readingan...:)

Sir Penguin
30-10-2002, 06:22:55
Although there are a few third variables in the experiment, current evidence does not confound our hypotheses. It could be that intelligent Readingans avoid the Internet like the enlightened church avoided the concept of a heliocentric solar system. This is unlikely. Further research will be required.

The thing that I didn't like about RtCW was killing the zombies, I prefer to kill live human beings and Mexican bandits just about fit into that category.
