The server will be down tomorrow so I'm posting this today. Pro Evolution Soccer 2 will be with us in a mere 24 hours!

I'm going to be out tomorrow night reviewing/judging a battle of the bands competition. Then on Saturday morning the traditional weekly Warcraft 3 games. It's like the definition of hell. Think of me when you are all setting up your master league teams and perfecting your one-twos. You lucky, lucky bastards.

Nav
24-10-2002, 10:01:44
ohh another ass whipping for me then.. and a couple of games of WC3.

If things go according to plan (ie the server move happens), people who can modfiy their HOSTS files will be able to access the site still.

Funkodrom

Things never go according to plan but good luck.

That's when I normally score my winning goal. :D I don't know what it is but the percentage of tight matches I win with a goal in the last minute is really high, especially against Shakey. Has been since the first ISS Pro Evolution.

Won't work on US PS2. At least that's what the wankers at Sony tell me.

Buy a UK PS2 as well.

I've got it now. I was worried I wouldn't be able to find it in Henley but they had about 20 copies.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 12:47:32
There seem to be some new moves. For instance pressing the left analogue stick whilst dribbing for a both foot feint. Tap R1 and double tap direction for a new 'dash dribble' option.

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:06:46
Mwahahahaa!!

I should having a footballing week next week. Playing football, watching football (Soton - Fulham and Bolton - Sunderland, because Saints and Bolton are the natural teams for kids in Warwickshire to choose), playing PES2, talking about football, playing Diplomacy (er?).

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 16:09:21
Sweet!

I have a choice this evening. I can either eat dinner or play PES2 'till the start of the battle of the bands.

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:25:16
You know, that’s exactly what someone else just said (sweet) :hmm:.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 16:27:03
The correct response is Dude. As per Dude Where's My Car trailer. (not the actual film which is shite).

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:30:59
The trailer was shite.

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:31:51
BTW, I hope you recognise Marvin.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 16:33:30
Oh is that who it is? I had no idea, especially as it was written over his head.

His hat's been knocked sideways in that pic though?

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:34:38
His head is sideways, he’s hanging by his neck from the curtain-rail above my window.

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:35:31
Hmm. Would playing ISS2 tonight be detrimental to playing PES2 tomorrow? I have a long tournament-winning streak to protect.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 16:37:29
Aha, I see.

I don't know yet. From what I've read the feel of PES2 will be more like ISS2 than PES so it might be good. Dunno.

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:38:17
Not IS2, PE2. Argh, so confusing.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 16:40:34
Do you mean will playing PES2 tonight ruin you for falling back to old ways in ISS2 in a tournament tomorrow?

Answer: Probably. I'd stick to ISS2 until after the tourny.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 16:41:40
But you should win anyway so play PES2 tonight.

Sean
25-10-2002, 16:58:50

First game. Random international teams. Me Ireland Shakey Germany.

Ireland 5 - 0 Germany.

:D

I was 3-0 up in half an hour. This game is very, very diffrerent.

Next game he was Chelsea I was Normandy. 1-0 win to Shakey. Both agreeing this game will take a lot of learning.

They all looked right apart from Orange015

Funkodrom

Sean

Because one of them is The Lake District?

Funkodrom

Funkodrom

Last night I thought you were talking about player names. (Hence Orange015 who plays for Normandy) I kind of guessed you must mean actual Team names when Sean said one was Lake District.

Funkodrom
26-10-2002, 10:20:15
I didn't realise you could edit them. Cool though.

King_Ghidra@home
26-10-2002, 10:21:34
as far as i can work out, a hell of a lot of the normal players have misspelled names as well though

it's so cool that you can edit the master league kits, names, flags, etc. i'm ecstatic

Funkodrom

Whee!

Best win so far: Inter 5 - 1 Arsenal.
Worst loss so far: Aston Villa 1 - 0 Newcastle.
Most annoying loss so far: Inter 3 - 4 Arsenal. I pulled it back from 3-1 only to concede a last-minute penalty. Doh.

Top game.

Funkodrom
28-10-2002, 10:35:32
Best win was my first game 5-0 vs Shakey. Also beat Debaser 4-1. Haven't played the computer yet and I've only had one loss, versus Shakey's Chelsea 1-0.

Haven't played vs the computer yet.

It is good but like PES it takes a while to get used to the new controls. Scoring is easy but defending takes a lot more work. You can also really dance through defences which is great. I'm sure that'll get harder as people learn to time the sliding tackles. The range of those is greatly reduced. I got fouled 18 times by Debaser in a game the other day.

Debaser

You used to skip through my defence in the old game too.

Eh? Our matches have been quite tight, as usual I take shots from everywhere and go for the crosses, while other players try to thread the ball through the middle. Muscling attackers off the ball seems to be quite easy.

Oh, the new commentary: .

‘He shoots! I tell a lie, he’s missed.’

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 09:18:52
The games were tighter when I started using inferior teams again. Playing K_G a few times would be the best test.

Crosses still seem tough to score from.

The new commentary is interesting, it actually keeps up with the play. Mostly it's relevant as well.

Sean
29-10-2002, 09:35:52
That doesn’t stop it being utterly, utterly awful. Trevor Brooking is a star, though. His pronunciation of the word ball in ‘that was an interesting ball’ is fantastic.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 09:45:05
It is awful but I think it's moving back to being so awful that it's funny. In places.

The commentary over the highlights makes me want to put a boot through the screen. "Let's see that from a different angle."

And the intro, but at least you can turn that off now. "Here's a screen where you can see the formations the teams are taking today" ARGH!

Sean
29-10-2002, 09:47:02
It’s funny at first, but it is starting to wear thin. I do like the different types of passes: gentle, straight, left, return to centre, right, through, high, slow between them…

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 09:49:45
Yes, and I like the player animations and the way they turn by putting the ball through their legs and the way they stretch out to collect balls. Also the recovery time after tackles is much better.

i don't agre at all, it's a massive improvement on previous efforts, and not as funko says because it's so bad it's funny again.

as far as i can tell it's relevant, timely and with very few ludicrous anomalies

although i do chuckle when i hear the
'force it in!'
'he's got fist to it!' combination :D

Sean
29-10-2002, 09:51:32
The tackles as a whole are better.

Sean

Yes, but that’s not the problem. The problem is the voice acting is terrible. Peter Brackley gets more excited about a jumping header clear than a shot just over.

‘Wah!’

King_Ghidra
29-10-2002, 10:00:26
yeah agree on the tackles front, as funko said the sliding ones are much harder to pull off and shorter ranged

i do worry about the dancing through defences being a bit too easy, need to see how this works out

shooting seems to be better for me than in the last one, not sure why, but the positions i'm getting into that wouldn't have resulted in goals last time seem to be more rewarding this time.

free kicks are a lot harder to socre direct from

don't like the new goalie kick outs after they get hold of the ball, the animation is naff and the whole thing is not as quick as the last one

funko we need a night this week to have a few games against each other and start to put a review together, tonight or tomorrow are best for me...

Sean
29-10-2002, 10:03:47
The goalies often seem to be very casual about kicking the ball upfield, certainly. Also, bringing the keeper out with triangle is bizarre: yesterday I brought my keeper out to van Nistelrooy, or tried to. Van Nitselrooy was coming in from the right, so I thought I would bring the keeper out and smother the shot, but the keeper ran off towards the penalty spot instead and left an open goal. Doh.

King_Ghidra
29-10-2002, 10:04:23
that happened in the first version too. fucking annoying.

Sean
29-10-2002, 10:05:24
Having said that the games were quite tight, I had most success with a 4-3-3 formation as Inter, with Barcelona, als playing 4-3-3, also doing well.

England are very good.

All comparisons I make will be with ISSPE2, because I haven’t played enough PES.

The players also mark a lot better on free kicks so you can't just pass short and score that way. I used to get about 70% strike rate from that.

I'd like to play for another week or so before I do my review. I've not played it very much at all yet. I've only played a handful of games so I've barely scraped the surface and like all of this series of games you only really get to the depths of it by extended play. I was still learning about PES a year after getting it.

Probably be watching Champs league tonight if you want to come over, we could have a couple of games.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 10:39:21
I never noticed the keeper thing in PES but I never brought him out if the striker was coming in from a wing until they reached reasonably close in the area. It's hard to score from those angles anyway so you're better off racing a defender back to the middle and closing the striker down when they try to open up a decent scoring angle.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 10:40:36
I have only played with Normandie, West Ham, Senegal, Ireland, Japan and the All Star Europe team so far I think.

Senegal and Ireland seem to be really good.

King_Ghidra
29-10-2002, 10:40:41
ok good point about the review.

one reason i need to get out of the house is because shell wants to do her tae-bo and i have been told i cannot be present because i take the piss :)

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 10:42:32

OK well come over sometime this evening before the game then. I think I'd rather watch Newcastle-Kiev than ManU reserves with nothing to win vs Haifa.

I was still pressing for the win.

:o. I have played as: Inter, Newcastle, Rangers, Inter, AC Milan, Barcelona, Valencia, Deportivo, Ajax, Man Utd, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Greece, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Paraguay, Brazil (I lost to Switzerland), Wales, Cameroon, Sweden, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Egypt, USA, and possibly some that I forget.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 10:56:40
I've played less than 10 games so far. :(

Says a lot for Warcraft 3 though.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 10:57:15
Oh and how does opening up your goal help you press for the win? :D

Sean
29-10-2002, 11:21:53
I was trying to get the ball back quicker :(.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 11:30:02
There's always time. Although I haven't managed a last minute winner on PES2 yet.

Sean
29-10-2002, 11:31:20
I have, in golden goal extra time, from a corner.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 11:33:20
Sweet. Nothing more crushing for your opponent than that.

I think part of my last minute winner thing is that once I did it a few times I started getting a reputation and people started thinking it was almost inevitable, they got nervous when I was attacking late on and made more mistake.

Sean
29-10-2002, 11:39:58
Like penalties? We have one person who was absolutely dominant in his groups, but got knocked out on penalties in both semi-finals because he was frustrated at not having won them in normal time.

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 11:48:14
Yeah, psychology plays a very strong part in these games. I play twice as well if I sit forward than if I sit back. (Shakey and Debaser can vouch for that). I also play a lot better if someone scores against me.

Comparison of PES2 and FIFA 2003 (no news access at the moment)

10/10 for FIFA? I played the demo and it was nowhere near as good as PES2.

King_Ghidra
29-10-2002, 11:52:57
i must admit from what i saw of the newest fifa it didn't look quite as dire as previous versions

i actually think fifa road to world cup 98 is a really good game - i played it a lot back in the day

still now it's iss/pes til i die i think

Funkodrom
29-10-2002, 11:57:16
Hmmm... PES2 got 10, FIFA got 7.

Funkodrom
30-10-2002, 09:49:34
A flurry of late goals yesterday.

2 goals in the last 10 minutes to get Ireland a win from the jaws of defeat as they came back from 1-0 down against K_G's Uraguay.

A last minute equaliser vs Debaser for a 1-1 draw for my USA against his England. And a last kick of the game 4th goal in the 4-0 drubbing by the USA in the rematch.
