Scabrous Birdseed

What an astoundingly bland name. Too long to be snappy, too short to be insanely long and interesting in a memorable way.

Funkodrom
23-10-2002, 09:06:39
It's not the world's most exciting name but when you've got as many strong wills in the band as we have agreeing on anything more exciting is impossible. This is about the only name we could agree on after months of arguing. I don't think it's as bland as you do though.

What can you do when your bass player outright refuses to be in any band with Chimp in the title? *sigh* It's a serious handicap.

Scabrous Birdseed
23-10-2002, 09:13:28
Now, Sonic Underchimp would have been a good name. Or "Chimp Undermined".

Funkodrom
23-10-2002, 09:59:00
Don't get me started, there are so many good chimp names.

i call it 'the brown berets' :D

actually no way you guys could ever be in a band as good as the brown berets

Goat Spawn

I know.

Still "Doo-doo scopic chimp-copter" rock pretty good

Funkodrom

The Brown Berets is without doubt the gayest name I have ever heard for a band.

Some guy who hates everything that is good and loves all the worst music. A sort of anti-music person.
It's good that he is around though otherwise everybody would agree on stuff.

I can't work out if his avatar is an actual photo of him.

Scabby's picture is a picture of Brian Reynolds. He's a nice guy, been to Reading to visit before. He just has odd views on stuff. :)

King_Ghidra
23-10-2002, 11:58:24
so when it says above the picture of the purple guy, 'purple brian reynolds' that actually means that it is a picture of brian reynolds? fuckin hell!!! how are we supposed to work this stuff out??!!

My problem with the name, as alluded to by funko, is that it is obviously a compromise. Understandable as that is, given that there are plenty of stubbon and opinionated arseholes :) in the band, it's still a compromise.

Look up rock n roll and you won't see much mention of the word compromise.

there have been loads of great names suggested over the last year that one or more people in the band didn't like but would have been much better than one compromise name that everyone in the band likes

of course it's not my band so... :D

Funkodrom
23-10-2002, 13:03:28
I agree, we did lose some names I absolutely loved. No choice though.

But.

I do like this name.

Funkodrom

More re: the band name. We also wanted something that wouldn't give people a preconception of what the music would be. The Unholy sounded like a school metal band, which is what it was originally however many years ago.

Gig on the 8th December! Everyone who can come should come!

Scabrous Birdseed
23-10-2002, 14:40:20
Sonic Undermined sounds like a dodgy electronica outfit.

And we are a gigging band with some recordings.

What's the difference between the two? These days you can get fans from real life or the internet. I've gone to see plenty of bands locally 'cause of their websites/recordings.

Other people are entitiled to their opinion and they can discuss us whenever they want. In fact the more people talk about us the better.

Or should I tell people not to bother coming to see us now, wait 'till next year?

I don't see why you are so sensitive about this. I'm sure people will get bored with saying they liked the old name more in a while. *shrug* I just keep saying that the band wanted it changed, doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

And who's airing band matters in public now?

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 09:31:30
Oh the other thing I say to nay sayers about the new name is that basically this is a totally different band to The Unholy, so it needs a different name to distinguish it.

protein
25-10-2002, 09:32:01
The fact is nobody saw the band before or now. I have a different view on what a band is. I think a band is something you listen to or see live.

protein

Of all the bands I've been in this is the most beaurocratic and non productive.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 09:37:27
How is that different? Why does that mean that someone can't say they liked one name better than another?

Pretty much everyone who's commented has downloaded Rock Cliche. So they have listened. I'm sure LoD would come to our gigs if we were playing in Poland. You can't stop people having opinions or stating them, just like you can't make anyone like our music or stop people hating it.

Too many strong opinions, too many people living in different cities. When we do get together we are very productive in terms of music etc. Bearing in mind this lineup has been together 4 months, we've done our first gig. Got one song recorded and another on the way. 2 gigs in the next couple of months, plus more that I should be arranging tonight, 10 songs...

It is a pain in the arse all the arguing though. It'd be a lot easier if everyone just did what I said. :D

I think we could benefit for a slow spacy solo rather than a fast metal one.

Yeah, what he plays now is slow and tear jerkery. I don't know anyone with a delay we could borrow.

Delay can sound good but can also sound completely shite. Goaty would have to practice a lot with it.

protein
25-10-2002, 11:24:30
just a little bit to give an impression of space rather than an in your face tear jerker.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 11:25:25
Sort of like super reverb?

protein
25-10-2002, 11:26:33
Like the vocal effects we have at the practices. Imagine the vocals without them.

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 11:29:17
What do you put on the vocals at the practice? That's just reverb isn't it?

It's a good idea. I can imagine John Mitchell will probably tell us to spunk the delay pedal off and then make it sound brilliant with all his own equipment anyway. He's probably got 4 reverb/delay things on one of his racks.

protein
25-10-2002, 11:39:38
The vocal effects are reverb with a touch of delay at about half a second. The reverb is about two seconds.
We'll use John's stuff for the recording. You can see a list of his effects on the website.
Goat man was talking about using a delay for the live stuff.

Goat Spawn
25-10-2002, 11:39:38
We put some delay on the vocals at the moment. Just one echo with a very short half life and medium length. (Just like the ROCK CLICHE one)

Funkodrom
25-10-2002, 11:41:43
Ok cool. I fear that PA, happy to let you guys play with that.

protein
25-10-2002, 11:42:21
The delay sort of makes you think of the sound in a massive space bouncing off a big rock wall. With the reverb (which makes you think of a big purple dark church), we should have a sort of huge cavernous purple rock church type of sound.

I need to get my amp to the next few practices to sort out the sound with it. Obviously that Marshall I use is pretty sweet but I won't have that. Plus I can stick a bit of reverb on with my amp. Sounds so much better for the non distorted bits.

Bar Oz isn't a huge echoy cavern like the Cheese and Grain was.
