I've heard a lot of good things about this this weekend and been ordered to Bristol to play it. Can't really be bothered to go that far though. Never really been into any of the Mario stuff through never having had a nintendo system of any kind.

It’s just got lots of cool stuff. Surfing, the FLUDD (water-pump thingy), Yoshi (haven’t found him yet), the bit on the rollercoaster against Mecha Bowser, the Dune Buds (water them and they grow), plus the whole implentation of the water pump: you have use it to hover, to push yourself off on a swing of floating leaf, etc.

My review: 8.0/10

A solid platformer, should have been a lot more seeing how much time Nintendo had with it.

Nintendo says it's a big disappointment, financially and culty speaking (I guess they wanted it to slam like a T. Sims expansion or Harry Potter movie). And they are now packaging it with their Game Cubes for free, in Japan.

Asher

It was a big disappointment to me. It was one of the reasons I picked up a GameCube.

Now the thing is sitting idle.

Starfox Adventures was an even bigger disappointment.

Hopefully they get their ass in gear with Metroid Prime.

All of my consoling time these days is being sucked up by Xbox Live (MotoGP mostly), or SegaGT (SegaGT and JSRF both now come free with Xboxes in North America, as well as the Controller-S, btw)

I saw that announcement, Ash. Is it a good change?

I remember when StarFox was about flying the fighter. Cool game. ArticFox was nice as well. But a FPS? Bleah.

Asher

SFA isn't a FPS, it's a shameless Zelda ripoff with Fox McCloud.

And yeah, it's a good change. :D

More royalties from Sony?

Nintendo have done some great games. Super Mario Cart was an incredible game. I'm not a big fan of platform games though. Actually I don't like them at all, I get bored.

Sony Schmony :p

Mario Cart was great, I'll give you that. But most of the other games were either dull, too easy, too kiddy for my tastes, or just a load of pony.

Eh, Goldeneye? Zelda?

I can’t comment on Asher’s score because I haven’t played it enough. The camera is incredibly irritating, though. Not entirely sure how it’s a ‘solid platformer’, though. The FLUDD appears to add a lot of cool stuff to do (admittedly at the expense of some of the moves from Mario 64).

DS, do you ever comment on a game without talking about sales?

I can, I’'ve done it before. I just need some software to take the actual screenshots. Will Hypersnap work?

Darkstar

Sean, occasionally. :D

I just found it insteresting that Nintendo considered the game a major disappointment. And so quickly. The game has only been out a short time. Cults take a while to develop, don't they?

I don't know. Never tried Hypersnap. Let us know how it works out...

GC AND XBOX SLUG IT OUT IN UK SALES WAR

The latest UK hardware figures show that in spite of the release of Mario Sunshine, GameCube has failed to pull clear of Microsoft's console

15:03 With Super Mario Sunshine having enjoyed its first full week on sale, GameCube has managed to stay just ahead of Xbox in unit sales, while PS2 remains untroubled in the number one slot.
GameCube sales rose to 6,104 last week, rising from 5,860 previously, with Xbox also rising to 6,083 from 5,591 units. GBA clocked in at 8,540, up from 8,145, while PS2 sales fell slightly from 22,235 to 21,225 units. The figures are for the week ending Saturday, October 12.

Though GameCube has narrowly beaten Xbox for the second week running, as Microsoft and Nintendo fight it out for runners-up spot, many expected Nintendo to pull clear following the release of its pivotal triple-AAA release, Super Mario Sunshine.

Nintendo will have been banking on its plucky plumber to spearhead a huge surge in sales but, only a week on, this has not been the case with Xbox actually narrowing the gap with both registering a weekly increase in unit sales.

Furthermore, Hitman 2 is now the official number one in the UK all-formats chart, knocking Mario Sunshine from the top spot after just one week, compounding Nintendo's concern. And with UK retailers like Argos now selling Xbox for less than 130, we've certainly got one hell of a fight on our hands this Christmas.

So the GCN and Xbox are neck and neck in sales, even when it's Super Mario Sunshine's debut week in the UK?

I don't think this was what Nintendo was expecting.

i don't agree at all - Nintendo have never aimed to dominate the console market in the uk, destroy the xbox or anything like that. nintendo has always occupied a unique position in the console marketplace and that situation remains the same.

Surely its microsoft who will be more disappointed.

Btw, asher you give SMS 8/10 and then say it's a big disappointment????????

Funkodrom
17-10-2002, 08:43:27
Absolutely. The Nintendo fans will always go back to Nintendo 'cause they offer games you just can't get on the other systems which are also uniquely Nintendo.

PS2 is the console of choice in the UK.

I don't like Nintendo based on the games I've played, which in my experience are all aimed at a target age group approximately 10-15 years younger than me.

yeah i agree, crap argument - game playing implies that you're amusing yourself not engaging in some activity arbitrarily designated as adult or childish. Nintendo's games are (for the most part) aimed at anyone who enjoys games, not adults or children exclusively

FunkyFingers

Stupid counter-arguement - would you actively enjoy reading a book that's targeted for a 4 year old?

That doesn't make sense though. MS is the new kid on the block without the big-name established franchises that Nintendo has, and it still usually outsells the GCN in the UK (the last couple weeks Nintendo has narrowly won due to SMS).

I think someone in Redmond has a big smirk on his face right now. And I'm not talking about the Nintendo guys. :)

Btw, asher you give SMS 8/10 and then say it's a big disappointment????????
Yep, definitely. I was expecting much more out of it. It is, after all, the sequel to Mario 64.

I could have used more level variety.
The textures look like they'd be home on the N64.
The FLUDD was cool at first but overall I realized it wasn't as fun with it. The best parts of SMS were the old-school platforming when they took FLUDD away...

You aren't 15-20 and you actively enjoyed the Harry Potter and Philip Pullman books which were both targeted at age groups 10 years+ younger than you.

??????????????? my post says that nintendo's games are not aimed at kids or adults, but at all gamers. If you perceive them as being targeted at particular age groups maybe its your own misconceptions of what games are appropriate for adults or kids to play that are the problem.

Nintendo's problem is that people associate colourful cutesy graphics and simple controls with games designed for kids. Don't be fooled! Take Super Monkey Ball as an example. From the point of view of a spectator it might look childish, but once you start playing, you can't stop. That game is so addictave it should only be sold by dodgy blokes on Camden High Street (specifically the bit by the bridge).

Also, since the demise of Sega, Nintendo are the only company who still realise the importance of good ice hockey games.

Asher
17-10-2002, 18:57:14
Nintendo has never made a good ice hockey game, what are you talking about?

The best hockey game this time around seems to be Sega's NHL 2K3, with EA's NHL 2003 a bit behind...

I still play NHL Breakaway '99 all the time on my Nintendo 64. It's an excellent game.

But I was totally talking out of my arse. I really don't know much else about ice hockey games.
