Too much EA on that list...

05-10-2002, 07:26:55
Nothing EA except the Sims, Madden, and Medal of Honour. It's the amount of Infogrames I'm concerned about.

05-10-2002, 08:11:20
I went looking for the one I thought I'd seen at Gamespot. Couldn't find it. It listed WC3 as #1, The Sims as 2,3, 5,6, 9,10. #4 was Medal of Honor and #7 was 1942, IIRC.

That listing is missing The Sims Deluxe... which is about as popular in sales as The Sims (Original Game). The Sims Unleashed is missed, which is eating up the Sim Fan dollars... newest expansion and all.

Couldn't find the latest listing on Gamasutra.

Still... I'm not surprised that Infogrames of Roller Coaster Tycoon set. They' hadn't been bumped out of the top 10 until Gold bumped out RCT. If it wasn't for all the Sims expansions, it probably would still be in the top 10.

Sad really... the best games long term are 2 and 3 years old? Well, I expect WC3 will tend to stay around a while. But that's the first I've seen NWN listed in the top 10 in a while.

05-10-2002, 08:45:55
That was for August - how old are these sims products?

05-10-2002, 08:49:36
Ah. Just released in September. And that explains NWN being so high...

05-10-2002, 09:14:55
Good, I'm not surprised that overpriced beta has fallen quickly.

05-10-2002, 09:23:23
You've really changed your attitude towards NWN, Shining1. Really disappointed in it's bugs? I'm not surprised it has bugs... sounds like they attempted a very grandiose thing, I think, and that generally means lots of code work with not proper testing... or testing from a 'fresh eyes' sort of thing.

What is this Farm Bug in MP I've seen mentioned concerning WC3?

05-10-2002, 09:39:38
Er... dunno. There aren't any farms...

05-10-2002, 09:42:50
Essentially they had taken 5 years on it, had to rewrite it to make a 3D engine, lost their publisher at the last moment, got signed by some assholes, had to release the game with 5 years worth of junked code. The project wasn't that massively abitious, really - it's about on a par with a 3D shooter. You need a game, a level editor, and a server system.

The farm bug is a pathfinding/building bug that under very special circumstances essentially gives you a double refund for building a farm. You can use it to get a truely massive amount of gold early on in the game with hardly any risk at all - a total game breaker.

05-10-2002, 09:44:25
Oh the human houses are called farms aren't they.

I haven't noticed a bug. There might be a balance problem but it seems OK, human houses are cheap but only provide a small amount of food.

05-10-2002, 09:49:49
Yep, and it's only a very special situation in which this happens - kind of like go to the highest platform, make Mario jump three times, run left run right and then wait for a minute = hot sex with the princess.

Or something:D.

05-10-2002, 09:51:54
I hadn't heard about that. How do I do it?

05-10-2002, 09:56:43
You don't because that would exploiting a bad bug and would mark you as a total bastard.

05-10-2002, 09:58:58
Or are you asking about hot sex with the princess? In that case which one? :)

05-10-2002, 10:55:58
Of course not I wasn't serious.

It sounds too hard for me to do anyway.

05-10-2002, 11:00:51
It might take a bit of practise but unfortunately it's not very hard. The ladder is totally screwed at the moment.

06-10-2002, 04:52:16
Actually, with an open scripting engine, that's a pretty big deal, Shining1. That's building a compiler, on some level. Remember, the highest paid comp guys are the guys that design and code compilers.

Building a little platform game isn't much of anything. But toss in a decent scripter, and you just moved from designing a unicycle to a mid market level production motorcycle. Even a basic scripter gets you to an entry level motorcycle.

A level designer isn't much, overall... That's tile/array editing from what I've seen of NWN. But everything adds up. There is a reason that KISS exists... :D

Still... it's a shame to ruin a game that naturally hyped up everyone. I hope this doesn't stop anyone else from making a similar concept product.

06-10-2002, 06:54:21
It's not ruined because it's not finished yet is the problem:).

06-10-2002, 07:01:34

No program is ever finished. Except for...

10 Goto 10

That's about it. :D

06-10-2002, 15:36:44
I dunno. I have enjoyed NWN mightly. But then I'm a RPG noob, and I have a soild squad of friends to play MP online with. We're having a tremendous amount of fun with it - well worth every penny it cost.

And for me, so far, it's been rock solid. No crashes, no headaches, just smooth gaming. The hench pathfinding in SP is kinda wretched, but that's about it, as far as I'm concerened. I'd take NWN over any other game released the last few years.

07-10-2002, 03:41:15
You play MP only then, so any NPC issues are NA for you?

07-10-2002, 12:04:27
Starcraft battle chest? That's not even in any store around here.

07-10-2002, 14:31:22
DS: Well, NWN is the only MP game I play right now, although I'm kinda considering that MMORGP Elite. And it's a blast. I spend entirtely too much time with it.

I did the SP campaign as well, and liked it, but then I'm not a RPG hardcore player and actually liked stuff like the stone of recall and abundant healing that people seem to bitch so much about. I gave up on Morrowind because I couldn't be arsed to mend the gear and keep the fatigue up all the time - I think NWN did great by abolishing all that tedious crap.

But different strokes for different folks and all that.

08-10-2002, 03:50:11
It's nice hearing someone saying nice things about it, Moomin.

RPGs are always about different strokes. Some people like the great, Super Heroic Epic type play, and others are into the nitty gritty pick that pocket, kill that smurf kinda play. Same goes for amount of rules and such.

But Shining1 seems very upset about things that ruined his fun that shouldn't be in the program. Which is unfortunate. We play games to have fun...

Maybe you could knock out a review for NWN, moomin?

08-10-2002, 07:54:22
From what i've read on this board peviously i don't think moomin is the only one around here who likes NWN. I posted several times (as king_ghidra) to say that i loved it and i'm sure if you look through the other NWN threads you'll see posts from other people saying similar things.

I totally back up Moomin's statement about it being bug free, i have never had any problems with it at all.

08-10-2002, 12:33:10
Knock out a review? Heavens no, I'm strictly a consumer of that kind of stuff. A bit of flaming or indulging stupid puns is fun, or voicing opinions here, but writing reviews is... work. *shudder*

Anyhow, I just got myself a shining new car, so as fast as I can sneak out from work I'll be out there collecting speeding tickets.

09-10-2002, 05:37:31
Well, we should get KG to do it then. ;)

10-10-2002, 20:09:08
I thought Shiny had volunteered, the game's been out almost too long to bother, now.

11-10-2002, 02:09:54
MDA - it's usually better to get someone who still likes and enjoys the game to review it...

11-10-2002, 09:42:41
I disagree. I think reading reviews that are dripping with disgust and loathing is far more rewarding. Not to mention fun. Great dissin' is an art!

11-10-2002, 09:49:00
Anyone who takes a game that seriously that they actually start to hate is overdoing it, though.

11-10-2002, 12:16:25
A review dripping with disgust and loathing is a lazy review.

11-10-2002, 12:19:11
Oh, I dunno. Maybe it's overdoing it, but then isn't all art about that? Somebody send me a copy of the Sims and I'll be happy to loath it to bits!

11-10-2002, 23:38:24
So you'll write a review of something you hate, but when it's something you like, that's just too much work?:)

15-10-2002, 16:23:13
Isn't he just trying to get a free game? :D

15-10-2002, 16:48:19
When can we start getting free games to review? That would be awesome.

15-10-2002, 16:50:26
I’ll take Mario Party 4 and the next Zelda game.

15-10-2002, 17:49:13
There's no such thing as a free lunch, gentlemen. If you get games for free you'd better hate 'em!

And dissing isn't really work, now, is it? Measure the ratio of whining and praise happening on any board on any topic and you'll see plenty of people doing whining for free ;)

16-10-2002, 02:12:26
I got LSN for free and actually really liked it:).

16-10-2002, 03:42:53
Well, if we want to be sent free games, we need reviews that are funny and done by people that liked the game. Dripping poison reviews that are funny can be very entertaining, but not many shops would care to send out a free copy to a site that disses games. They won't want to be dissed...

I was going to do a comparison review of Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights, but
a. I bought neither,
b. I've finished neither, and
c. I started to write, but then I realised that the only reason I started was to avoid studying for Math.

I even had a couple good lines thought up.
