I had one of those moments today. You know- the ones where all the hairs on the back of your neck stand bolt upright.

It was in the Virgin Megastore where I was having a lunchtime browse. John Otway had just finished an instore performance and signing (I'd never see the shop look so empty), and the store radio station was playing.

Then this astonishing track came on. It was a pretty leftfield sound collage- all blurred samples and sound-pulse, but this unearthly voice suddenly kicked in. I froze. I thought it was brilliant. It turned out it was "Open Heart Zoo" by Martin Grech.

His voice may be a problem for some. He sings counter-tenor, which in layman's terms means he makes the singer from JJ72 sound like Barry White. It's operatic too, in a nicely tragic sort of way. Imagine if Thom Yorke from Radiohead, rather than sounding a bit mopey and moany, sounded genuinely agonised then you're getting close.

Anyway, check it out. You'll either love it or hate it with passion. I'm about 90% sure that Snapcase will think it's kack, but what the rest of you make of it is anyone's guess. I'll certainly be getting the album when it's out.

He played in Reading last week, got a great review from Josaka (http://www.josaka.co.uk).

Some sort of Reading listings rag?

Does he feature on a car ad in the UK? There's a superb operatic kind of Jeff Buckley-esque tune on a car ad here that I really like. I don't know what it is or even what the car is.

Oh and it's the Lexus advert.

Yes- it seems that the ad protein mentions is indeed "Open heart zoo".

The song's getter better with repeated listens. I neeeeeeeed that album.

I thought it was the Coldplay guy when I first heard it :). It’s alright, but doesn’t really set me on edge or even make me hate it. It just moseys on along.

Using my patented "litsen to shitty RealAudio samples" method of music selection, this is... marginally interesting. Didn't think you were into metal.

Haven't seen John Otway in a while. Aparrently he's booked the London Palladium for a concert out of his own funds.

One of my all-time favourite rock quotes was made by John Otway when his girlfriend left him. He said "That's the last time you'll ever go out with a rock star!"

His girlfriend was Paula Yates.

Actually, this has grown on me. I might get the album along with Do You Know Squarepusher tomorrow. And maybe BF1942.

Speaking of which, Laz, the album was released 22 July 2002. It’s out, in other words.

I don’t suppose you could do a mini-review before, say 1 PM tomorrow?

Funkodrom

If you can PM it to me and I'll publish it.

As it turns out (having only just read this) I couldn't. Want one for the weekend?

Sean

No, I bought it today (see soon-to-be-posted thread about crappy music shops). He’s playing at the Coliseum in Coventry next weekend, only one problem: the Coliseum is in Hillfields. Ah, well, A got shot at with an air rifle but I doubt I will be in any danger.

Actually, Laz, review it anyway.

Listen to songs off the album here: http://www.islandrecords.co.uk/martingrech/

I've really been trying to like this.

I thought Open Heart Zoo was great on that Lexus ad, and the full version sounds really good too. Unfortunately there is just something about the other songs I've heard (patricularly Dali) that make me think Babylon Zoo.

Strange, Dali made me think "Muse, Muse, I'm a Wanker".

I liked Dali, don't really like Open Heart Zoo.
