Advice requested...

My brother has asked me to get him a Rolling Stones SuperAudio CD for his birthday as they have just released a completely re-mastered series of their entire album catalogue on the new uber-format.

What I would like to know is what is the seminal Stones album? They have released quite a lot of material in their 350 years of rocking!

I like 'Let it Bleed' but it doesn't have all the big hits on apart from 'Gimme Shelter'.

Exile On Main St is my favourite. Like Let It Bleed, it doesn't have any really big hits (do Tumbling Dice and Rocks Off count as hits?), but it does feature the classic Turd On The Run.

Rocks off counts as a hit, Turd on the run counts as a shit :D

Hmmm.... Spontaneously I'd say critical favourite/commercial also-ran Exile on Main Street, but it's a bit tricky to get into. Sticky Fingers, the other early-seventies sensation, has more hit material and a way cooler cover, but overall isn't quite as good.

Maybe you should get a classic-period sixties album... The very first one perhaps. I still rate Not Fade Away as one of the sexiest songs they ever recorded.

I just checked and Sticky Fingers/Exile on Main Street are out. Only the ABKCO stuff, ie Eponymous to Let it Bleed, has been SACD'd.

What about the Greatest Hits that comes out soon? Have the tracks on that been SACD'd?

I thought they'd remastered the entire back catalogue on to hybrid SACD/CD?

Aah, it seems not - the Virgin stuff hasn't been SACD'd yet, so out of the ABKO stuff, which would be the best?

I think Beggars Banquet looks like a shoe-in...

Aah, excellent. My Hybrid SACD release of Beggars Banquet has arrived safely and I do have to say that, even in bog-standard CD mode, it clearly sounds better. The re-mastering using DSD is superior, looking forward to hearing it in proper SACD mode... Good album too.
