Ok, I've bought a big thing -> 3.5mm adapter. Now all I need to know is what port to plug it into in the back of my soundcard (Soundblaster Live!) I've got five choices, well three as one of them is Mic and one is Speakers. There are diagrams on each of these and also colours but the mean nothing to me :)

Also is it best to go through my amp, or just plug it straight in?

Funkodrom

Have you got line in? I think it's like a set of circular things with an arrow pointing into it. I can't see mine from where it's sitting on the desk.

Don't go through an amp.

MattHiggs

I've got it on Line-in now, but the only problem is I can only here it through one speaker.

Did you buy a stereo plug converter?

MattHiggs

:)

Obviously not.

Then record it as mono, fucker.

Sorry about that, I slipped into my "Venom" persona there for a second.

MattHiggs

Where would I be able to pick up one of these stereo convertor gizmos?

Scabrous Birdseed
19-09-2002, 18:27:49
Look, take out your converter, does it have one or two little coloured lines? Does your guitar lead?

AFAIK guitars record in Mono.

MattHiggs
19-09-2002, 18:28:56
Ah, ok I get you.

No, it just has the single one. So the convertor wouldn't be of much use. Thanks :)

MattHiggs

Ok, got it all set up. Cakewalk is open. I also have some guitar studio thing (which is poop). Now time to find some of those plug-ins.

Funkodrom

Guitars are in mono anyway.

what colour is the plug,

plug it into that coloured hole.

Found a nice real time amp program called Guitar FX box.

Ask Caligastia if he will kindly forward the plug-ins I sent him. They are worth nearly a grand and they aren't half bad!

Can you sub mix the guitar before inputting it in to your pc? Do you have a mixer or even a four track you can use?

I use a four track and use the stereo out to go in to my pc. I can then record a stereo signal output from the four track, I could in theory record a stereo guitar track plus bass and vocal on to one stereo Cakewalk track.

Does your effects processor have a stereo out? Do you live near a shop that sells audio cables? Do you have edonkey?

Edonkey is the most invaluable tool for the home studio owner - you can get any software/mp3/image/video you can think of for free. Yes FREE! All that limits you is your patience when downloading. I haven't stopped using it for months. I know professional producers that use it regularly when they need software too.

Don't plug you guitar in to your amp and then straight in to your pc. Your pc should act as the equivalent of a studio reel to reel tape.
One way to record a guitar is to have your amp in another room where you cant hear it and mic it up with a good mic pointing in to the cone at an angle. Keep adjusting the mic and EQ until the sound from your monitors is sweet and hit record.
Another way is plug your guitar in through some effects or straight (preferably sub mixed) in to to your pc - and then to emulate the amp sound with effects either in realtime or post recording. This is what I have to do because I stupidly sold my Marshall.
I would recommend recording in a real recording studio or asking to watch a band being recorded at a studio to see if you can pick up how things are done and how sound is best recorded.

Well, I must throw in my two pence worth....

Never, I repeat Never plug a guitar straight into a piece of hi-fi/computer equipment. A) it sounds crap and B) the range of frequencies are not designed for standard speakers.
always mike up a guitar amp, set the amp nice and loud and adjust the gain on the mike input, till you have a signal that flicks into the red.
Now you are ready to rock.
Make suer you have a monitor nearby (it doesn't have to actually work). Next place on foot upon said monitor, extend your tongue and solo.
(This position lends itself nicely to the neo-clasical arpeggio...)

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 08:24:18
Plugging guitar into the computer is OK for basic recording. protein did most of his demo stuff like that. It's not as good as micing up an amp but a lot easier to get sounding reasonable, especially if you don't have a good amp or mic.

Goat Spawn
20-09-2002, 08:28:06
Trouble was, protein's guitar always sounded like it was Direct Line'd into a computer. Although the effects he put on it improved it slightly it didn't sound anywhere near as good as a mike'd up amp (even a shit amp with a crappy mike)

Goat Spawn
20-09-2002, 08:28:46
I meant to say mic by the way!!

The foot on monitor and tongue wiggling is extremely impotant to acheive that distinctive widdly sound.

Even a miked up Synchron Twin Twenty?

Goat Spawn
20-09-2002, 08:38:27
Especially a miked up synchron twin twenty. The best thing is that amp has the right dimensions to look like a monitor. With your foot on a STT you can achieve almost all guitar sounds form Anthemic brit-rock to ZZ top

Your best bet is to go far a Yaminex Flibleget 130LSEXY. Turn the Glangater right up, but make sure you don't over-compensate for the built in Rehaminator. Once you've got a sound you like yodel away, be remember, if you let it get too juicy it starts to uprankle so you might need to turn your input level up to about 6 (transverse mid-range it).

IMPORTANT: Always check for positive L.K.R!

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 13:23:10
He shouldn't need to worry about L.K.R if he's got a Yaminex, they come with a difubrulator as standard these days.

Debaser
20-09-2002, 13:25:38
Yeah, but the new versions are shit. They just Defrob your sound. The Flibleget 130LSEXY (or any from the Flibleget series) use old Be-Communice boards, avoiding this problem.

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 13:28:57
Is the Rehaminator really as extreme as I've read?

Debaser
20-09-2002, 13:37:27
It's probably been a bit over-hyped, but it's definately as good as something like the (much more expensive) Xeononixic Mindfucker. It's slightly lacking in onboard effects, but does hava a Quazziflaps, Gutteralhowl and flange. It also has a built in tuner like the Synchron Twin Twenty.

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 13:38:35
The Mindfucker was a classic in it's time when Jimi started using it but it's showing it's age now.

Will they never build amps like the Twin Twenty again?

The Omnitron 40 40 is leading the market in terms of infra-sound emulation. The best of the whole Omnitron range is the Zaglon Ultra-boost, which has apparently a similar range to that of the twin-20. It has a built in squt-Q and Phrt-9 for thost deliciously salty noodle riffs - You can also sour the sound by simply plugging in a phantom or any kind of spirit.

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 14:14:47
Bullshit, the Omnitron gives guitar sounds like a rubber band twanging over a lever arch file.

protein
20-09-2002, 14:16:46
Exactly. A salty rubber band.

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 14:17:14
It does not sound Salty. It's sweet like chocolate.

Debaser
20-09-2002, 14:20:21
It's still got a long way to go before it can propertly recreate the STT's trademark "Shit" sound though.

protein
20-09-2002, 14:20:29
Well, this is where the whole Omnitron sweet or salty debate comes in to play. I like to think that the Omnitron sound is granular like salt but has the bitterness of good dark chocolate.

Goat Spawn
20-09-2002, 14:22:03
Damn you. Have you not been reading the literature? The omnitron sports only a co-axial to pluri-nodular combination port. I mean, really, even 18th century music was making use of the multi/semi/omni-oscillatory nature of already long established audio-sonic duality of the twin twenty.

May Sychros forgive you

Debaser
20-09-2002, 14:25:01
The obvious flaw with the Omnitron it that, while it does the granular/bitter thing pretty well, it lets itself down by only having an Axcisseronion expansion socket. Most guitarists these days use either Grabbamonki hardware or the RockitScienz emulation kit.

Funkodrom
20-09-2002, 14:25:25
I don't need to hear the literature I can hear it. It's about as sweet as a pickled chilli!

If you want TRUE pickled chilli emulation though, only the STT will suffice.

protein
20-09-2002, 14:27:34
Sychros can kiss my snonk.
Pluri-nodular technology is what makes the Omnitron Mega-Beeper so affordable yet still savory. You can literally smell the music coming out of the speakers.
