Please use this thread to vote for your choice for the most prestigious award on the internet - the Counterglow Game of the Year otherise known as the Glowie award.

There is no wish to close off anyone's choice, so the poll facility is not being used here. The only restriction is that the game has to have been released during 2001. So please keep a tally running through.

Any type of game, any platform. Vote for the one game that you would not wish to be without going into 2002.

Voting ends on 31 December.

So this is just Game of the year. Will we be having different categories like Strategy game of the year, Multiplayer game of the year, etc?

Also. Point out the platform the game is on as many games come on several different platforms.

Looks like it's just one game of the year... which is OK because there is only one candidate for me. :D

this is too tough for me...

i have played over 160 hours of Phantasy star Online on dreamcast this year
but i also know that pro evo soccer is a masterpiece
and i discovered the joy of counter strike on pc too
then there was final fantasy x on ps one
and soul calibur on dreamcast
and gran turismo3 on ps2
oh and pokemon gold/silver on game boy colour

damn

errr i'll go for...

Phantasy Star Online on dreamcast - i know no-one else will share my passion but i have to stick up for this beautiful beautfiul game:love:

It's easy for me because no matter how hard I try the only game that has grabbed my attention for any period of time other than ISS Pro Evo II and Pro Evolution Soccer is Tony Hawkes 2.

So much for people keeping tally!
Looks like I'll have to do it.

Pro Evolution Soccer (PS2)- 1
Escape from Monkey Island (PC/PS2) - 1 (was that 2001?)
Phantasy Star Online (DC) - 1
Operation Flashpoint (PC) - 1

Have to give a mention to
AvP2 - for more scary shit
BG2 - for occupoying most of the year
MW4 - big stompy robots=fun
IW2 - for outstanding graphics and flight model

And for the most dissapointing

Eurofighter Typhoon - for totally failing to live up to expectations after Total Air War.

I'm surprised not to see for PC: Tropico (not Civ3, notice, since the game won't be finished until early 2002).
MW4 was fun, but short.

I've only played Metal Gear2 Solid on the PS2 for about fifteen minutes on a friend's system, but I was completely blown away, so what's keeping it off the list?

I'll put my vote in for PC: Tropico, since I can't accurately comment on MGS. Haven't played these others, though.

I realised I have stopped buying great games. I've bought three games this year (MindRover (old, but only published in a box this year... can I vote for that?), Europa Universalis (shite) and Civ 3 (er, decent, I suppose)), and none of them were brilliant. I'll vote Civ3 anyway.

Vincent Fandango

ooh this is a bit of hard choice!

biggest dissapointment this year: Black & White.

Wolfenstein is v.good, civIII drew my attention for quite a while (ok about a week), but I really enjoyed some of the original gameplay (ie bullet time) and brill graphics in Max Payne. So it gets my vote, just.

Bad year for games for me. D2:LOD is probably what I have played most, but it really does not have that 'game of the year' feel to it.

Haven't played Tropico or Wolvenstein or much else for that matter, and games released before this year started don't count for GotY.

I'll have to get back to you on this...

On other issues, having a runoff between the top 5 games is a reasonable idea (given how all the votes are split), but there is one major flaw in it - most people haven't played the games. So for me, picking between RtCW and Op Flash is impossible.

Best FPS is a tossup for me. AvP2 was scary as shit, especially on the harder difficulty levels when one alien had the potential to kill you if you killed it with any respectable weapons. RtCW was still damned good though and looked far better polished with better designed levels as well.

Best Strategy, well I only bought one, Civ3, so can't really vote there.

Best RPG: BG2 expansion (since bg2 came out the year before)

For what has taken up most of my time, AutoCAD... god I hate that fucking program.

I might have played D2X about three times as much but ToB gets my vote 'cause it hasn't pissed me off anywhere near as much as D2X has.

Though if I manage to get past the Hell Ancients before the year is out (unlikely) my vote might change.

As much as I really wouldn't like to, I'll stay with MikeH's original choice.

Pro Evo Soccer on the PS2 is superb! It was a very close toss up between Grand Theft Auto 3, Gran Turismo 3 and probably the best driving game ever made for a console: Formula 1, 2001. The driving physics are superb and the feel is fantastic, the first driving game that a full quota of tactical options are available. GT3 had a nice touch on the tactics front but no where near the beauty of Formula 1. GT3's prowess was in the mind blowing graphics. The PS2 has lived up to what It was hyped up to be. The only problem so far is the price of the games.

No, Paul, there were plenty of good OLD games this year. 2001 was the year of the remake and the sequel. Almost nothing remotely new - just the flawed Black and White.

Darkstar
27-12-2001, 06:43:54
Actually, Uplink is new. I think they released it this year, as a matter of fact. Just a small company. And it's unique for computer games. It's not unique from Cyberpunk RPG... RTS adaption of the Cyberpunk Hacker role from Cyberpunk.

Startopia might be a sequel, if you are a serious Dungeon Keeper type. It certainly is similar. But it's a very GOOD game. And the trading to make your money aspect was something I REALLY enjoyed.

But we've argued that there hasn't been a truly new game on computers for years. :D

Shining1
27-12-2001, 06:46:40
I'm sure there's something out there that will fit most people's tastes in some genre or other. It's a matter of being able to find it, especially in the countries which don't get all the titles shipped to them. I haven't seen a copy of Combat Mission ANYWHERE in New Zealand at all...

Darkstar
27-12-2001, 06:47:05
And we've argued about Black and White. It wasn't unique. A seasoning of Populous spells into a pretty standard RTS primitive fantasy setting, with a Togimachi or whatever they are called tossed in.

Games are like music. You really can't do anything truly 'new'. But you can come up with your own blend that people like.

Darkstar
27-12-2001, 06:49:47
Yeah, well, there isn't a shelf copy of Combat Mission on sale in North America either. It's a direct sale deal. You order the game DIRECTLY from the developer. No retail.

Just like with Uplink and a score of other small games.

If you want Combat Mission, order it from them. I would suggest you download the demo first, of course. And try it out. It's a real hardcore wargamer's game... Joy to the Grognards!

Fistandantilus
27-12-2001, 17:02:54

So the running scores with the hishest # of votes to least is as follows

In 1st place its a tie between:

Civilzation 3 (PC)
Max Payne (PC)
Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal (PC)

All with three votes a piece.

In 2nd place its a toss up between:

Pro Evolution Soccer (PS2)
Operation Flashpoint (PC)
Tropico (PC)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (PC)

All with two votes a piece.

In 3rd Place all with 1 vote a piece are:

Dark Age of Camelot (PC) - 1
Diablo2: Lord Of Destruction (PC) - 1
Phantasy Star Online (DC) - 1
Startopia (PC) - 1
IL-2 Sturmovik (PC) - 1
Zoo Tycoon (PC) - 1

And last but not least you have the people who are either too poor to buy games, made up poor excuses for not buying games this year (Because its been a bad year for games apparently) or they're generally just gay twats... Anyway; I Don't buy it guys...
