This is album is so damn good. You gotta love the riffs and solo in the Riverboat Song. I've had the album on repeat all day!

What's happened to all the indie music of the nineties? :(

Funkodrom

It's still out there, just not getting such big promotion these days.

It's been consigned to the dungheap of history, finally.

I've not heard anything new being played in clubs, I suppose I AM KLOOT could be classed the same. I just miss the days of hearing constant decent music on the radio and anticipating new albums/single releases. No new music I've heard excites me anymore.

I go through phases of music I like being available and not available as musical fashion changes. At the moment it's a great time for me.

I don’t really pay attention to what’s new or not, I just buy CDs when they’re cheap.

I really wanna find some new bands that sound like:

Kula Shaker, OCS, Oasis, Blur, Stone Roses kinda sound :D

Have you heard Black Rebel Motorcycle Club?

Indeed, whatever happened to my rock and roll? :(

There are loads of good English indie bands out there, you just have to look a bit harder to find them these days.

What about The Music, The Libertines, Cooper Temple Clause, or The Soft Parade? Also new albums are due out soon from Supergrass, Ash, Richard Ashcroft and John Squire.

If you want good music on the radio just listen Xfm, the Evening Session or John Peel.

Yup, Roots Reggae is gone and has been since 1978 really. Anyway, I never really liked it in the first place.

These days considerably better stuff (Dancehall Rap, etc.) is coming out of Jamaica.

12-09-2002, 13:39:49
The Doves are good, so are the Cooper Temple Clause. Can't think of any other bands that have actually affected me emotionally.

MattHiggs
12-09-2002, 13:40:41
I'll check out some of those recommendations Debaser, thanks. :D

Dancehall Rap  I can probably safely assume that I wouldn't enjoy it. I don't particularly like Jamaican rap from what I've heard, which isn't much to be honest.

Yeah loved the Lost Souls album, need to check out the latest one.

Bunch of skanky inner city farm boys playing folk music.

Not true. Most of the hype is coming from place like the Sunday Times Culture supliment and Q Magazine. Publications generally impressed by bland, boring, worthy, trad rock (eg Ryan Adams, David Gray, Travis).

Scabrous Birdseed
12-09-2002, 17:07:06
Ryan Adams is cool. The rest can fuck off.

The Shaker

you missed the B off.

I liked early Travis stuff like U16 Girls, then they got dull. David Grray is ok too, nothing I'd go out of my way to listen too though. Never heard of Ryan Adams.

Overproductive songwriting genius badly in need of some restraint, possibly to arrive with maturity. He's currently working on five fucking albums at the same time.

Idlewild is probably the best indie band of the present time (if that is what you could describe them as), I agree, compared to the mid-nineties there isn't much out there that really hits me, which is sad, hence my movement away from the genre as a current source of music. There was some damn great stuff in the mid nineties, but most of the more recent stuff just leaves me with a feeling of ambivalence...

Funkodrom
13-09-2002, 08:19:57
Look harder. If you can't find music you like you're not looking hard enough or in the right places.

Provost Harrison
13-09-2002, 18:18:02
Oh I do know where to find music I like, that isn't the problem. But my main comment was meant to be that those places that used to be abundant have simply dried up nowadays.

Funkodrom
13-09-2002, 18:39:54
That's fashion, the music's still being made, you just have to look for it.

MattHiggs
14-09-2002, 01:15:03
Think I've found some music I like now:

I AM KLOOT
The Doves
Ian Brown (to a certain extent)
Third Eye Blind
Cooper Temple Clause

Funkodrom

Keep seeing Cooper Temple Clause in bars in Reading, will they never stop stalking me!?

He has taken the best tracks of them to create Demolition.

I really liked Whiskeytown, his solo stuff doesn't get me as much.

Although I saw him play a acoustic showin a small club in Nottingham and you could hear a penny drop. He held the audience captive and went through a pack of Marlboro!

considering their age their admittedly-obviously-influenced first album is fantastic.

and to say that it's the bland rock types of the Times etc. who like them is nonsense - they were NME coverstars a couple of weeks ago and their write up from the glastonbury festival in NME was excellent too

I don't hold youth (or old age) as an excuse. If you do, you end up thinking that the greatest band of all times was the St Winifred's School Choir.

NME is the worst of the lot these days.

And I'm not saying that just because my editor (who's a much worse writer than me), is getting a job there after he graduates, the little christian bastard.

i'm not holding it up as an excuse, i'm holding it up as a reason to respect them even more than you already should

and to answer scabrous point i didn't mention the nme to say how brilliant they were i said it to rebuff debaser's claim that it was only mags like the times weekend supplement that was bigging them up

and as for the being folky funko, i would compare it more to captain beefheart and early pink floyd - maybe you haven't heard the right songs...
