Check out the top scorer. :D

The Shaker
10-09-2002, 20:45:34
where?

Fistandantilus
10-09-2002, 20:46:36
Just for the record. I never bought a zeppelin. That has to be said :nervous:

LadyRachel
10-09-2002, 20:47:15
Too bad the messages don't show, it was hilarious watching over Ned's shoulder. He must have yelled at shakey to stop building catapults at least 3 times.

Funkodrom
10-09-2002, 20:48:00
And you didn't see what Fist was saying to me.

Funkodrom
10-09-2002, 22:09:27
Oh and you might have to move the map into maps/downloads but I forget the name of the map.

Funkodrom
10-09-2002, 22:10:34
Second game Fist and I lost. Shakey improved massively and Shiny wasn't hindered by being Undead. Plus I screwed things up.

Shining1
10-09-2002, 22:19:26
That's my first full proper game with the Night Elves. I think I like them:D.

Funkodrom
10-09-2002, 22:34:00
They seem very hard to beat. Undead die like the flies buzzing round their eyeballs.

Shining1
11-09-2002, 03:06:28
Yes but they do that to everyone else too. Ghouls and Abominations are the two weakest units in their tiers respectively.

Undead players generally win by being all round better RTS players than their opponents. And you can rush with ghouls very quickly. Fist would have put me under huge pressure if he's attacked early with all his troops - I scouted him out and he had about 5 ghouls when I had one archer.

Shining1
11-09-2002, 03:07:18
Oh and while we're talking about scores, mine for the second game was more than Mike and Fist's put together:).

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 08:38:39
What was mine for the first game compared to yours and Shakeys?

Shining1
11-09-2002, 11:35:00
I can't remember. I think I got a lot of bonus points from all the units my towers killed in your first ill fated assault:).

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 11:42:01
10 steam tanks kinda minced them the second time though. :D I got a lot of points from that.

Nav
11-09-2002, 11:49:18
Dammit. I need Warcraft 3 to view the replay. Maybe I should get it?

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 11:52:44
Worth it just to see Fist's zepplin crash. :D

Nav
11-09-2002, 11:56:10
If I did get it you'd have a new newbie to beat.. I mean practice on... :)

Hmm 24.99 on play.com .... tempting..

11-09-2002, 12:31:51
WC3 nerds ... :hmm:

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 12:35:17

Damn nerds.

Shining1
11-09-2002, 12:43:43
You wouldn't like it. You'd get horribly beaten by Italians all the time:).

Mightytree
11-09-2002, 12:45:08
I would?

Mightytree
11-09-2002, 12:49:50
Italians can't even beat South Koreans, so why should I be afraid?

Fistandantilus
11-09-2002, 12:56:42
Mighty: you shouldn't, really.

Worth it just to see Fist's zepplin crash.

FU, bastard ! :) Next time I'll take a screenshot of the chat transcripts so we can have a laugh.

Btw, it was a blast guys. Had a lot of fun.

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 12:59:47
Quick summary of Fist's chat to me:

FUNKO!!!!

ATTACK!!!!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!!

SHIT!!!

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 13:00:10
It was a lot of fun. Did you get in a lot of trouble at the pub? :D

Fistandantilus
11-09-2002, 13:03:43
Not really. I'm always late ;)

Funkodrom
11-09-2002, 13:07:26
As late as me coming to the rescue? :D

Shining1
11-09-2002, 13:40:35
Italians can't even beat South Koreans, so why should I be afraid?

Er, well. When it comes to the craft games, beating South Koreans is the ultimate achievement, really.

Fist et al: Agreed and :)

Anyone up for another one "tonight":)

If you want to play someone in, say, New Zealand, that's probably pushing it a little bit.

Otherwise you MIGHT just be alright. I haven't had any problems on my machine until we started playing Mike.

Funkodrom
12-09-2002, 09:47:36
And it's playable from 20,000 km away.

Shining1

Funkodrom
12-09-2002, 11:55:21
That's Judge Dread.

Shining1
12-09-2002, 12:23:48
Judge Dread Lord?

(The real one is Dredd...)

And I'd just like to say that Shiny and Shakey is a great name for a team, let alone a brilliant description of New Zealand:).

Funkodrom
12-09-2002, 12:28:11
Isn't Fist Funkodrom a better name?

Shining1
12-09-2002, 12:36:54

Idea: games companies should make free ‘replay viewers’ for games like this. It would be great for encouraging people to play.

Funkodrom
12-09-2002, 12:41:58
Great idea!

Shining1
12-09-2002, 12:43:02
Not a bad idea, and you'd certainly get a great feeling for what the game involved, too.

Btw, did we mention that the first game spawned a new Superhero team?

It's the Ultimate Teammates, consisting of Zepplin Man and Catapult Boy:).

Sean
12-09-2002, 12:45:18
Or I could just download a free ‘replay viewer’ with added gameplay features. Would Blizzard rather I did that?

Funkodrom

She's still working on it:).

Installed my new WarcraftIII CE last night, played Ric a couple of times. A lesson on how to use the Orcs for both of us, namely, don't do anything dangerous until the late game when you can heal things.

Anyway, since Rachel and I can play now, we should get some more games going:).

After a brief detour to pick up some Acolytes to mine the gold, we fly up to the top northwest gold mine. Oh, no! The mine is guarded by two red drakes and a rock throwing golem!!

Yeah, don't spend your time attacking my peasants. :(

Shining1
22-09-2002, 16:35:31
You killed my Hall. Vengence was called for.

Funkodrom
22-09-2002, 16:37:36
Only 'cause it was where I wanted to build my hall. That was just selfish of you.

Shining1
23-09-2002, 12:31:10
No, it was selfish of you!

Funkodrom

23-09-2002, 12:45:28
Shiny lost before I did. :D

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 12:45:51

Venom
23-09-2002, 12:50:11
Oh so you did get spared. How does it feel getting pity because you're so bad?

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 12:51:06
Absolutely fine. :D

Venom
23-09-2002, 12:51:28
I figured as much.

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 12:53:39
I was sitting there lying about how I didn't have any units whilst my peasants were long distance mining. Managed to get a town hall up in the end. If Shiny could have held out a bit longer...

Venom
23-09-2002, 12:54:26
You moved to slow. You should have saved him. I do like the lying part though.

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 12:58:33
Actually, I kind of accidently fucked him over 'cause he was trying to build a hall where I wanted to build my second one after I spent ages on hit and run attacks killing the creeps there with my heroes. Cheeky fucker. Anyway then he rushes in with a town hall so obviously I had to attack it which must've diverted his attention from whatever Rachel was doing 'cause a bit later I got "Shining1 has left the game" and Rachel saying "Thanks Mike!"

Of course I didn't last much longer than that. :D

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 13:00:40
I had a nice cigarrette break whilst I was waiting for my peasants to get enough gold for my new expansion as well. :D

Venom
23-09-2002, 13:26:36
Next time they're going to severely kick your ass.

Shining1
23-09-2002, 13:57:31
We've agreed that next time we BOTH go and try to kill Mike and steal his resources:).

Just viewed the replay of the second teams game we played - it was damn fun with a whole pack of stupid decisions being made by everyone involved, right up until Rachel crashed out of the game due to computer bollocks.

I have no idea who would have won. Rachel played magnificently the whole game, Ric was good but got too distracted after Mike and I attacked his base early on. Mike and I were kind of like a german shepard attack dog being restrained by a 5 year old kid - I started too many bad fights and dragged Mike into them by the leash too so we both got hopelessly slaughtered in needless fights.

At the end it would have come down to Mike's Griffons vs. Rachel's Hippogriff Riders in a very very close contest for supremacy, except that her computer couldn't take the excitement anymore.

Which is probably just as well because if she'd lost at that point I suspect she wouldn't have spoken to me for a week afterwards...:D.

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 14:00:26
So it'll be the same next time as it was last time then? *shrug*

I don't think the fights in the team game were that bad but you never quite gave me time to prepare for them. That was a great game though.

Funkodrom
23-09-2002, 19:56:52
If he was then Rachel was very good indeed. I'll have to watch the replay. To see Shiny's build if nothing else as he was Humans this time.

Shining1
24-09-2002, 03:49:51
You won't learn much there, all I did was build knights and the occasional spellcaster. I didn't even get polymorph which made my 3-4 Sorcs a little useless standing around with permanently full mana.

There were definitely times in that game when a couple of flying sheep would have saved the day:D

Funkodrom
24-09-2002, 08:26:51
You were way, way quicker than me though in the early stages.

Shining1
24-09-2002, 11:11:17
That's just online practise. It will help a little bit if you get hero rushed or something like that, but otherwise isn't too important. War3 is quite good for early defense and rush breaking, unlike Starcraft.

Funkodrom
24-09-2002, 11:19:23

Shining1
25-09-2002, 02:45:58
LOL@Night Elves.

Kodos are useful for the bonus damage when you already have a lot of units around. Orc Heroes don't give many Auras.

Main problem I find with the Orcs is during creeping or early combat - their units are very tough, but they have to reach very high in the tech tree before they can do any Healing at all. Need to depend on Mirror Images or Spirit Wolves to take damage during early fights to avoid getting so beat up they fall over the first time they encounter an enemy.

They are so hard though. After footmen I was stunned how tough the Grunts were.

One problem I found was the lack of mana bonuses for heroes. The Brilliance Aura is definitely missed.

Oh and I spent ages looking for the upgrade to the woodcutters. :(

Shining1
25-09-2002, 11:12:53

Peons are crap...

Funkodrom

They are. I've just been reading up on the Ork units. They are actually pretty good.

Funkodrom
25-09-2002, 11:21:05
If I sound surprised it's only 'cause I've only really seen shakey use them before. He said that they looked a lot better when I was using them than when he was. :D

Funkodrom
25-09-2002, 11:27:20
Oh and now I know where the wolves were coming from, they weren't invisible you were casting them! :bash:

Shining1

Level 3 wolves are invisible. I only had to cast them once:D

Shining1
25-09-2002, 12:44:06
Played a game against comps with Rachel, got a level 6 Archmage (finally). Mass Teleport totally rules.

Funkodrom
25-09-2002, 12:50:55
It does. If you can keep the AM alive long enough to cast it.

Funkodrom
25-09-2002, 12:54:16
I got the Blademaster first yesterday but just checking battle.net/war3 and they say that the farseer is the Ork player's first hero of choice. Makes sense. I was going to Blademaster rush Shakey but I chickened out.

Shining1
26-09-2002, 04:02:19
Yeah the wolves are better to creep with. BMs can't cast mirror image very often, and the mirror does no damage. Critical strike is great one vs. one but since chain lighting can do about 1000 points of damage to an army in one casting at level 3, it doesn't really make up for it.

Earthquake is also a highly effective skill if you use it correctly, while Bladestorm can be extremely damaging but is easy to run away from.

Funkodrom
26-09-2002, 08:23:05
But you have to weigh up that against the fact that the Blademaster looks fucking cool with that huge sword.

Shining1
26-09-2002, 11:56:49
Vs. his ultra annoying Asian accent...

Funkodrom
26-09-2002, 11:57:55
I didn't think that was annoying really.

Shining1
26-09-2002, 12:06:19
You get used to him. I just have issues with Koreans and Battle.net:).

Funkodrom
26-09-2002, 12:11:02
I didn't even really notice it to be annoying in the first place.

Shining1
26-09-2002, 12:17:16
I usually pick the BM as my second hero for the Orcs.

Funkodrom
26-09-2002, 12:19:16
Him and the farseer seemed to work well together. Even with no powers active he's hard as fuck and the critical thing and mirror image thing is great.

I had a wand of illusion as well but I didn't think to use it could have made millions of them. And I didn't realise you could control the mirror images seperately.

Shining1
26-09-2002, 12:27:54
Mirror images are great for scouting and blocking. You can cast them at the front of an army when you are using mass shamen and a few Orcs vs. lots of melee units (Aboms or Knights, say, or even Hunts), and it's very difficult for your opponent to get their units to stop attacking the mirrors and focus only on 'real' troops.

Add in a couple of wolves and some players can just mass shamens without regard to anything else, since they can summon a melee army straight off.

Wind Walk is also great for getting out of trouble - cast it when you are nearly dead and use the invisibility to get away from the enemy.

The trouble with all of this is that the BM doesn't really do all that much during a fight to help your side do damage, especially if the mirrors get dispelled. The TC and FarSeer are way better when it comes to dishing out damage to the enemy.

Are you looking for more players as well? I only bought the game last Saturday, so I am probably not going to put up too much of a fight initially, but that is what practice is for.

So far I have only been lurking at this board, but Fist should know me from a couple of SMAC games. I am in Norway, so I should be available for play at the same times as Fist and Funko.

We're normally on ICQ, my number's in my profile.

It will probably be late tomorrow morning our time, so 11-12 BST.

Don't worry much about the time difference. Shiny and Rachel are freaks of nature.

I will never play this game with you guys. Primarily because I don't ahve it and even if I did, I'd suck at it.

True true. Guess we'll just have to spend a minute before each game reflecting on such a great loss.

I will never play this game with you guys. Primarily because it looks dull.

If they had a Dwarf faction, then it would rock.

Elves are gay.

There is a dwarf faction, it's called the human alliance:). All of their units except the Footman, Knight, Peasant, and the two Elven Spellcasters are Dwarves:).

No sign of Shakey, he's still in bed.

3 games, and Mikes 'weekend of horror' did not abate:(.

Started with an experimental 2vs2 with me and Rachel against Mike and TauCeti. You know how that worked out... in fact Rachel wants me to team up with her on Battle.net and take out the 2vs2 arranged teams ladder. Or something:). At the very least, the strategy cogs-and-wheels of her mind did not settle down for at least another 4 hours afterwards...

She did very well with the undead, however, given that she hadn't played them at all before (except in the campaigns). I went random and got Orcks, which was entertaining in a massed Taurens kind of way. These guys do VERY well with an undead ally - the Dreadlord's vampiric aura gives them a very good return for the damage they do.

Second game, a 3vs3!! This was great fun but I can't really remember much of it. I think Mike got taken out early on by the combined forces of Rachel, me and TauCeti (who is a very very good supporting teammember - he builds nice buff casters). Then it was only a matter of time before Ric and Fist were overrun by the combined might of the forest. Poor little traditional undead/orc hordes...

Third game, a 2vs2vs2 which turned into yet another 'pile on Mike' benefit after only 5 minutes. Firstly when mine and Tau's armies massed and attacked Fist's undead base, and then when Rachel and Ric's forces teamed up to attack his actual base. It could probably only have been worse if it had been a total free-for-all and Fist had joined in...

That left Fist nicely posed between the standoff between me and Tau, and Rachel and Ric. As a skeleton raisers dream, this ultimately untenable position yielded some really amusing battles, and was a great example of using mass Necros to clean up someone else's battle:).

After which it was a litany of building and planning blunders on my part which finally turned the game against us. I really am no good at anything except just building a mass of knights and then not using them... sorry Tau.

And even more sorry to Mike. That wasn't a good night, and you're probably due for some favourable teams next time as a result. Hang in there.

What happened in the first game was that Fist and I attacked Rachel's expansion but didn't tell Shakey to come and join us. all your 3 armies responded so we lost a 3v2 battle. Then you all followed into my undefended base. Game over for me. I think that was just better teamwork on your team's part, we'll learn from that for next time.

In the 2v2v2 I happily sent my units to defend Fist's base against the ShinyCeti army and we drove you off but at high cost to our units so when ShakeyRachel arrived at my base it was again undefended. Escaped a peasant but he died as well. That was just bad luck really.

Rachel's still unbeaten in the team games!

Oh and I want to back up what Shiny said about TauCeti. He was very good considering it was his first couple of MP games. He clearly knows team RTS strategies.

OK.

Read the guide here:

http://www.battle.net/war3

Ask us as many stupid questions as you can think of.

I played the first 6 and a bit missions of the human campaign but now I'm distracted by MP and I'm not sure I'll go back to them. They were quite fun though.

Shining1

The campaigns are great for learning how to play the game, including hotkeys and perhaps clicking the mouse properly if you've come from a left-click based RTS or no RTS at all.

Funkodrom
01-10-2002, 10:33:16
Yeah, but they aren't as much fun as learning by playing MP.

Funkodrom
01-10-2002, 10:33:48
I still need to do them to learn what the undead and Elf buildings are but I might just try playing Nav as those races to get that instead.
