Bought this today, and I'm currently installing it... (it comes on 3 CD's... why is there no DVD version?!)

There's a review on Gamespot somewhere (if it hasnt gone completely)

In brief it's similar to GTA3, but is more set mission oriented. ie al lot less free-form. It's set in prohibition era 30's. So the cars won't be that fast... I'll post more about it later.

Stupid ass Gamespot.

ooh ... ooh ... insert cd 3!

(this game really eats harddrive space!)

What's that guy doing with a M1911 Colt 45? He should have a Tommy Gun.

06-09-2002, 18:09:12
They do have baseball bats though...

America's true pasttime. Beating people with baseball bats.

It's what the IRA turned to after they gave up their guns....*

(almost finished installing.. longest ass install ever.)

*Probably totally untrue....

How much HD space does it actually take up?

Why is his index finger clipping through the area around the trigger. That's poor model animation

The gun was around back then for about 20 or so years Venom. Good ot see you still know your guns on sight. Was worried about not hearing about any murders that we'd have to send you back to training.

That's what you call you do in the past time called joy riding.

Surely there's some serious cow-tippin' to be done before it comes to baseball bat bashing? Or have all the cows been converted to McD hamburgers already?

It takes up 1.8Gb according to the box.

The graphics are okay (not as good as GTA3), but very intensive. The stats on the box say PIII700 128Mb etc (true if you run lowest res - lowest detail)... on my Athlon1.2 with 256mb and a geforce 3.. I have to go to 800x600 with low detail to get any decent frame rate (the cars are very detailed).

Oh I know how long it's been around. Hence the name 1911.

09-09-2002, 16:45:22
part of the name is 911, that has to be significant

09-09-2002, 16:51:18
Must be. And the whole Tommy gun thing. I bet someone named Tommy once got shot by one of those.

IIRC it was named after the guy's nickname Tommy, his real name was Thompson, hence the M1 Thompson submachine (like the one in Wolfenstien) and Medal of Honor (IIRC). The M1 just used a different cartridge and firing pin design.

Since it's not quite everyday knowledge I won't call 100-0.

I almost didn't post it as I thought it might be 100-0 bait, but I figured it'd be arguable as how many people on here know what I said above beside you and I?

10-09-2002, 15:14:53
Yeah. It's not common knowledge so there really can't be a 100-0 on it, but I was tempted! TEMPTED BY FRUIT OF THE 100-0!

10-09-2002, 15:15:41
Although I'm also sure someone named Tommy has been shot by one.

More than one likely.

So how is it Nav?

17-09-2002, 13:15:31
Mixed bag. Great character graphics, some poor scenery and pop-ups. Great story line, the plot driven elements of the game are excellent, but there is no variation. You've got to do it one way, and keep trying that one way until you finally crack it. (which is usual, but GTA3 got me into the random factor thang)

On one level you have to beat up a gang of hoodlums with baseball bats, my buddy goes running in and starts to get beaten to a pulp, and in the process blocks me from getting the bad guy. First time I tried it I beat my own bloke to death by accident. Not perfect.

There are some cool driving parts (ie driving a 1930's grand prix car around town), but mostly it seems to be quite mundane. Drive from A to B, avoid cops. Avoiding the cops means driving at 40 and not running reds (though they have to be near to catch you).

It also needs a beast of a machine to run it at high-resolution with good detail (I'm struggling at times at 800x600 with low detail on my Athlon 1.2/Geforce 3)

It's not GTAIII: 1930, but it's fun. Worth it, just. I'll finish it after I've played Battlefield 1942 a bit more.

Nav, get a swifttech block and throw a HO 80mm delta or Thermaltake fan on it, you should be able to OC it to ~1600 while staying easily within the safety range, you can get 1200's up to around 2000, but you need GREAT case and cpu cooling or a water or compression cooling system. If you want to OC and need details, let me know.

G3's you can overclock safetly TREMENDOUSLY compared to g4's. You should be able to get nearly double the gpu and memory speeds without extra cooling (ie, a slot blower that attaches to the side of the PCI/agp slots - don't get a Vantec slot cooler which installs in a pci slot as they are shit (they don't run at 42 cfpm as advertised, but at 4.2 cpfm). If you have good cooling though, OCing the g3 to about 75% is easily possible and quite common.
