View Full Version : Battlefield 1942

Has anyone played the demo of this? I don’t know if any of you ever played Codename: Eagle (great fun multiplayer), but this is like a WWII version of that.

In the demo, it’s a team-based territory capture game (conquest). When you start the game you can choose to join the Axis or the Allies, and which class you want to be. The classes are scout (sniper), assault, anti-tank, medic, and engineer. Each team has a number of ‘tickets’, which enable their players to respawn; if a team has no tickets left, they lose. To take tickets from the opposing team, you can kill their troops or take control of all of the control points.

For example, the demo multiplayer map, Wake Island, has five control points. Each of these has several respawn points. The Axis start with none of the control points, but do have respawn points on an aircraft carrier. When the Allies have control of the map, the Axis’s tickets decrease slowly, but because of the initial difficulty for the Axis (assaulting a fortified island), when they control the map, the Allies’s points decrease rapidly.

Anyway…it plays well: you can run about on foot, get into a gun emplacement, snipe from the bushes, drive tanks and APCs, or get into a plane and wreak havoc on unsuspecting enemy troops. The mechanics are simple, with standard FPS controls when on foot, and basic controls for vehicles. It’s not as realistic as some games, as a single shot to the head with a sniper rifle will not kill a newly-spawned player. It’s not about the realism, though: it’s about flying planes and going ‘wheeeeee!’ and mowing people down in jeeps and detonating bombs under tanks and running around as the super-medic, healing yourself in between frantic fire-fights to defend the control point.

It’s available for download at 3dgamers.net (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/battlefield1942/), and is 130mb to download, plus 12mb for the new patch. You’ll probably also need GameSpy Arcade (http://www.gamespyarcade.com/) to find games using something a bit more reliable than the in-game server browser. Go get ’em!

i just started playing this yesterday after my cowies and clan mates kept pestering me to give it a go, and it is absolutely amazing!

So far i've...

flown the fighter bombers
sat in the fighter bomber as the tail gunner
driven an aircraft carrier (and crashed it)
fired the huge battleship guns
set up some flak cover against attacking planes
stormed the beach in a landing craft
fired the shore defence guns
driven a jeep (and ran someone over in it)
driven a half-track and a tank
operated the MG while someone else drove the half-track and tank
sniped as a a scout
planted mines as an engineer (and driven over my own mines and died)
blown up a tank with a bazooka
shot down a plane with a bazooka
etc. etc.

in a few hours play i've already had so many unforgettable moments - this is really going to be huge and i encourage everyone to jump online and play it ASAP!!

Played it. It's great, but runs like a dog on a 56K modem ... and the servers are full of tits that shoot their own side just to get in a plane.

10-09-2002, 12:18:04
just like real war :D

That is what backfire is for—you get hurt by the amount you hurt your own team-mates multiplied by an arbitary number. Unfortunately, you get a new way of killing someone and getting in a plane that way: stand in front of them on the runway. If they run you over, they die and the plane survives.

13-09-2002, 09:51:40
i spent an increibly frustrating 45 mins last night just trying to get in a fucking plane and test my new control settings out.

Every time i got near one i got strafed, bombed, sniped, or some prick jogged the plane while i was taxiing and sent me into a tree or the sea or something.

In the end i smahed my keyboard on my desk and scared my girlfriend. Hilariously she told me to stop banging my wood

13-09-2002, 10:29:56

I see your long history of peripheral abuse is continuing unabashed.

13-09-2002, 13:57:39
K_G, why not just set up your own private server to try it out?

13-09-2002, 17:22:00
errr...i...already did that but then i wanted to try it in 'anger'

i think i might reinvent myself as tank commander :)

13-09-2002, 17:51:50
Just be an infantry guy, we have all the fun. Snipers/scouts only really work on busier server, but assaults and engineers are always good for some serious ass-kicking. Especially Axis assaults at the start, a couple of them charging for the Airbase in a boat right off the bat. Usually catches the silly people trying to get a plane cold.

14-09-2002, 10:02:07
Don't forget the retail patch for this game. Gamespot ran a newspiece on them releasing the 1.1 patch after the game went gold, so everyone should have it.

16-09-2002, 11:49:37
yeah i got the patch, a big improvement.

Sean what name do you play under? I'll keep an eye out for you on All seeing eye.

16-09-2002, 11:56:35
I haven’t been playing lately, for some reason my pings have started going over 1000 after I join. If I am on, I will be Lazlo.

16-09-2002, 12:04:33
that happened to one of my clan mates, i'll try and find out if he's sorted it out and report back if there's an answer

17-09-2002, 09:31:47
sean, my clan mate says that his ping improved massively he checked the 56k box for his connection speed rather than adsl/isdn or whatever - i've heard similar things elsewhere so might be worth a go

17-09-2002, 11:42:34
Are you guys playing the demo? According to play.com the game itself isnt out till Friday.

I've been playing the demo as much as I can since Sunday.. I definitely think I'm gonna buy this one.

17-09-2002, 11:42:39
Ah, cheers, I’ll give that a go later.

17-09-2002, 11:43:39
X-Post. Nav, I’m playing the demo.

17-09-2002, 11:49:37
I had this hilarious drive in a jeep yesterday. I was powering down the road when one of my team-mates got in the way, I swerved only for the guy to move the same direction. Splat. As a result of the swerve I careered into another Team-mate. Splat. Then barrel rolled onto the beach. Luckily I survived. :nervous:

17-09-2002, 11:59:37
I wonder if throwing yourselsf flat on the floor would work to escape a jeep?

17-09-2002, 12:03:41
are we talking real life now?

17-09-2002, 12:36:06
be my guest to try that one out in RL before risking it in the game.

17-09-2002, 12:43:38

aarrghh...well...it was a partial...succe..ss...

17-09-2002, 13:51:54
btw I found a good server called Multiplay UK, it's password protected.. but they advertise it on their website! It's 'candle'.

17-09-2002, 14:18:47
nav what's your online alter ego?

17-09-2002, 14:24:42
Pulped. I've been using the internal server browser up to now though.

17-09-2002, 14:45:29
all seeing eye supports 1942 now - i love it, i haven't touched gamespy in months

18-09-2002, 14:27:07
sshhhhh! i just got a 'special advance copy' of this today... :nervous:

18-09-2002, 14:38:37
. What are the other game types?

18-09-2002, 14:44:50
only tried it on a test machine at work so far that installed it but can't run it beause it's win 95 and won't do the directx update

anyway there's the conquest from the demo, a straight capture the flag, team deathmatch i think...

you can play any of the maps with bots if you have no friends

some of the other maps (and to give you a sense of scale the big ones are about 40mb compared to wake at 11mb) Battle of the bulge, market garden (arnhem), tobruk, el alemain, stalingrad, berlin, iwo jima, err...forgotten the others ( i had to uninstall it before the corporate spyware got me)

remember, you didn't see me right? :nervous:

20-09-2002, 09:36:54
Ok i'll do a full review of this very soon, but it is absolutely bloody brilliant let me make that clear right now.

Having the full version it was nice last night to have a bit of a go as the germans rather than just the japs and yanks from the demo.

I had a ball driving tanks around on the battle of the bulge level.

The stalingrad level was a bit disappointing, i thought they could have made the map a bit bigger and emphasised the ruined street fighting type of game a bit more than they have done.

My cowie tells me that guadalacanal is a blast, two small islands and a destroyer and an aircraft carrier on each team.

The only thing i find frustrating about is so far is that waiting 20 seconds to respanw after you die in singleplayer is fucking annoying, and also sometimes you spawn and someone drops a bomb on you or something and you're dead straight away.
Still, after driving your mark IV panzer in a flank attack, blowing up a couple of tanks and self-propelled guns and mowing down a few soldiers all the anger jus fades away :)

20-09-2002, 11:26:06
How good are the bots?

20-09-2002, 11:32:38
sean! my one and true friend who always responds to my battlefield 1942 posts! how my heart skipped when i saw your name in the last post list!

errr...the bots are pretty good at doing bot things like shooting and flying the planes properly. They do stick together and back each other up well, but their tactical nous is predictably poor.
Luckily you can direct them to a certain degree using the radio commands.

They seem to have a problem jumping in and out of vehicles and switching between the gun points - i think they get confused when surrounded by too many other firendly bots - they don't know who to support and help first.

20-09-2002, 13:05:39
Got hold of my 'average from the shop' copy just now. Really looking forward to seeing some of the other game modes and especially the maps.

I'm not overly concerned about the single player mode, itd be good for practice etc, but the multiplay is what I got it for. I need something to replace Tribes now that I'm bored with that (and after I failed to get back into CS).

oh and Ive been too busy to visit properly the last couple of days. :bash:

also guys, set your sound to 22hz instead of 44hz - from what i've seen on the forums this can be a big help

20-09-2002, 16:42:14
on the demo Im satisfied with my average ping of 20...

20-09-2002, 18:16:27
Well now I want to play this game.

21-09-2002, 12:09:10
btw don't turn you connection speed down to 56k it makes the game run like shite. (unless of course you are on 56k.. poor fools)

21-09-2002, 14:50:56
oh ok, maybe that only applied to the demo

apparently the problem was that the game was tryign to refresh the server list 'behind the scenes' while you were playing the game :bash:

23-09-2002, 10:08:37
btw, is anyone doing a revew of this - because i am writing one now...

23-09-2002, 10:10:53
No I saw that you volunteered and didnt attempt to do so! ;) See if you can get any good screen shots!

23-09-2002, 15:10:43
1500 words today, i'll finish it tomorrow :)

23-09-2002, 20:58:01
best feature / worst feature. No auto-reload.. that keeps catching me out (though less so as I get used to it)

KG what servers are you playing on and what username?

23-09-2002, 21:07:10
i'm mainly playing on the ea servers - they seem to have very low pings and a good number of players. I prefer the conquest maps and don't normally go on ctf maps.

I'm still Rocco, but i'm thinking of a change...

23-09-2002, 21:46:16
Hey that was a cool game when we won 1 - 0 !! I shot two guys at the end, I thought I was going to lose the whole match when I saw the rocket flying towards me. I just killed the guy before it hit. Game over. :)

23-09-2002, 22:11:09
yep, tightest result i've ever seen - easy

i was fighting custer's last stand by the flag on the hilltop in the centre - great fun

24-09-2002, 09:13:49
That was such a massive area. I dont think I saw you once!

24-09-2002, 12:13:42
Blech. The demo stopped allowing me to use the mouse a while ago, so I uninstalled it. I’m a bit wary of buying it, given that.

24-09-2002, 14:55:20
Apart from damn slow loading times I've had hardly any problems with it... so buy it!

24-09-2002, 15:01:46
New Squarepusher album out Monday, though.

24-09-2002, 15:13:30
just bang a couple of pots with a stick and tune the radio between channels and you should get the same effect :p

27-09-2002, 22:11:30
There's something wrong with this picture... I'm top of the scoreboard. The close confines of Stalingrad obviously suit me.

I'm not as good on massive wide open maps..... *boom* dead.

02-10-2002, 12:33:20
I have a small request for the review.

Mr. Ghidra, if you would be so kind as to keep up the current trend in gaming articles by providing a picture of a sinister cloaked figure I would be delighted.

02-10-2002, 12:36:52

02-10-2002, 13:30:31
would that be 'sinister cloaked figure of the week'? :)

05-10-2002, 10:55:39
"running around as the super-medic, healing yourself in between frantic fire-fights to defend the control point."

That's ME! :shoot: I mean literally.....mwahahahaha..you'll never take my CP, sean.

I’ll mow you down, and your team-mate too!

05-10-2002, 13:00:31
I wanted to buy an additional 256MB RAM yesterday extra for this game but they didn't have any at the computer store. :bash:

The long loading times are really killing this game for me at the moment.

My username is JackieDaniels BTW.

05-10-2002, 13:01:31
We should have a CG game sometime. Like, when I have the game.

06-10-2002, 22:28:55
ahh so more memory would speed up loading. never considered that. (actually havent played it this week)
