For fuck’s sake, Aphex Twin is a he, not a they! His name is Richard D. James.

Anyway, yes, I have heard a fair bit of his released stuff (which is allegedly only 5% of his musical output). The videos to Come to Daddy and Windowlicker are both very good, and he’s released two magnificent volumes of ambient works. Oh, and there was the track made from looping a bouncing ping-pong ball.

I listened to Come to Daddy and someone told me the Windowlicker video is amazing. Click on the 'H' on that site and look at the images. Pretty weird.

Come to Daddy is better with the video. Still creepy without it, especially that scream.

He likes messing about with his face, yes. Look at the cover to the Windowlicker EP, or the Richard D. James Album, or I Care Because You Do.

PS: we do have a music forum, you know.

All of his tunes (that I've listened to) seem to have an arcade game feel/influence ?

Have you been listening to his earlier albums? Are they quite Ravey? Some of his earlier stuff does have a very computer gamey feel to it.

Have you heard that tune constructed entirly out of Pokemon samples? I think it's called Pikachu Motherfucker. I was going to use it for one of my LWP3 tunes, but decided against it.

Oh, and, MUSIC FORUM!!!!!!!!

I can do an impression of a window licker.

Try and make you left elbow touch your left ear also try and get your tongue to touch your right ear. Now make funny noises. Bingo you can get one free ride on a disabled bus.

on the cover of that cd he put his head on the body of a skantily clad model in a bikini...
very odd

I didn't like Windowlicker, far too ambient for my liking. I do however love 52 Cymru Beats and Come to Daddy. His work is so intrusive it's great.

I've only ever heard Windowlicker and it was like going back to the bad old pre-Neu! days of electronic music, when the aim was to create as awful dissonant shit as possible instead of beautiful minimalistic blue-eyed-soul. Anyone can string together random noises of no musical consequence, it takes a genius to create perfectly crafted electronic pop.

You never saw Windowlicker??? That video had me sitting stunned in front of the tv for 10 minutes. It appears to be a string of strange noises (a lot of it played backwards), but it really got to me, and watching that video freaked me out every time.

Aphex Twin is cool, ginger bloke with a beard and mustache, and such fine works behind him as To cure a weakling child and Xtal, some of it very experimental though.

The first time I saw that "Come to daddy" video was right after smoking some primo weed. What a buzzkill, scary as shit. Great stuff though.

I used to do trips a lot when I was about 12-13 if I listened to any of this music at the time I'd probably be in a mental asylum now. Really atmospheric, creepy stuff.

And why've you moved it to the music forum. Oh well nice knowing you thread. Bye bye :(

You guy's must have heard To cure a weakling child, the one with the lyrics-

'My- feet, My- Arms, And- My- legs....'

the rest of the lyrics are mostly obscurred by the music, and looped anyway.

I actually agree with Snapcase on that point, well at least for Windowlicker. It doesn't sound put together enough for my liking, no real melody to it.

I like his more drum and bassy type songs.

Sean

I thought that was a pretty coherent track.

On the other hand, that’s the good thing about someone like Aphex: you could buy his Selected Ambient Works CDs and see him as this great ambient artist, or you could be Higgsy and like his more d-n-b type stuff.

Higgs: have you heard/got the Richard D. James album?

MattHiggs

No, I don't but I'll probably go out and buy it this weekend. I need some more CD's anyway. I feel guilty downloading all these MP3s.

I wouldn't know if the songs I've heard are off the album, have you got a track listing and I can tell you the ones I downloaded.

Um…To Cure A Weakling Child (as mentioned by Qweeg), Girl/Boy Song (also some remixes of it), Corn Mouth. Full tracklist probably at Allmusic.

Ghost in the Shell is a great track.

I agree with Sean, for Aphex Twin Windowlicker is a pretty straight forward track.

Don't buy The Aphex Twin - "Classics", it's a really rubbish collection of pre '95 rave tunes.
