I gave in. My thirst for a new RTS and the positive reports were too much for me so... I borrowed Shakey's copy.

Played the tutorial last night and the first three human missions this morning before work. (I was awake at 6, damn jet lag) It's pretty good so far. The 12 unit limit is very annoying and the playing screen size is too small but so far, the magic hasn't been too annoying and it's fairly easy to control.

You can tab between different unit types with any groups of units you have selected to use their special abilities which is a really handy feature.

The heroes also seem pretty reasonable so far. I've only got my paladin up to level 4 at the moment in the campaign but he's... interesting.

The campaign is also pretty decent bearing in mind the first few missions are only effectively familiarisation/tutorial missions really. Some nice cut scenes etc.

Generally it's, initially, erasing the hideous memory of Warcraft II.

Pussy. Why don't you just suck Blizzard's dick while your down on your knees kissing their ass.

Played it loved the FMV's but the game itself left a lot to be desired. It was awful.

Oh and I played the 4th mission last night. I'm still enjoying it. Still very early stages though.

Anyone know if you can play 1v1 on a LAN with only 1 CD? Can't find any info on the battle.net site about that.

Funkodrom
05-09-2002, 10:44:14
And the answer is... you can!

Now to see if I can pound Shakey... although he normally seems to beat me at these things. Damn his practicing and things. :D

Venom

And damn your total lack of skill and talent at anything as well.

Yeah, that too.

I had to share this:

Me in single vs single game:

Hi. Good Luck.

My opponent:

F*ck You. I will 133+ your ass. I RoX.

Me:

Just how old are you?

My Opponent: 43. Why?

Had me LOL for most of the game.

Multiplayer is great:). I even have two wins.

There are a lot of cheap rushes and other tactics out there at the moment, but the game replays are an invaluable resource for figuring these out. Each time I think I've seen an unbalanced or extremely cheesy strat, I check the replay and discover that no, I'm just slow and inexperienced and generally pretty crap.

What I get for being 3 months late online, I guess. At the same time, especially playing at the lower levels, I've never found anyone who seems unbelievably faster or better than me.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 11:34:56
As I can't view replays or play at work I've been checking out the strategy forums, learning from others mistakes. I haven't seen anyone post an 'unbeatable strategy' that others haven't posted counters to yet. Although the huntress rush seems like a bitch.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 11:54:55
And I suspect that I'm very, very, very slow and crap. :D

Only Blizzard game I played before this was Warcraft II and I absolutely hated it.

Shining1

Rachel just beat me again. Your cause is hopeless Mike, you'll never catch her now:).

Funkodrom

At some point her skill level will peak. It'll just take me a while to catch up.

Venom
06-09-2002, 12:48:39
By then Warcraft 17 will be out.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 12:49:31
Probably. Especially as she probably plays as much in a day as I can in a week... if I try really hard.

We have to organize a wc3 counterglow match...

Funkodrom

I have played the first six missions of the human campaign. Give me a chance to get started. :D

LadyRachel
06-09-2002, 13:09:21
Right, that might take a while yet since Shiny doesn't actually have his own copy yet (waiting for NZ Post to deliver his collectors edition...)

Funkodrom

When we played at AoK the first time I made her feel guilty 'cause she beat me so easily it was embarassing.

Shining1
06-09-2002, 13:24:42
Oh, this will be nothing like AoK.

Wiping someone out in that game takes half an hour. You'll be lucky to survive 10 minutes:).

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 13:30:27
I'd consider 10 mins a success. :D

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 13:43:59
I'm aiming for 5. ;)

Shining1
06-09-2002, 13:58:25
Might be tight.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 13:59:36
You've got to have challenging but achievable goals.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 14:03:36
We could have 6 games in the time it took for one of AoK.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 14:06:35
We could have 3 games in the time it took to do the basic economy stuff!

Shining1
06-09-2002, 14:07:06
And you can. Very easy to get games, it's watching the replays to see how you lost that really takes time.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 14:09:37
Well that should still only take 5 mins per game.

I don't like watching replays. I always think I should just be playing more.

Shining1
06-09-2002, 14:24:02
Perhaps. So far I've found them very instructive.

MDA
06-09-2002, 14:44:06
what does "gg" mean?

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 14:44:25
Oh, I'm sure they are. I just get impatient watching them 'cause I want to jump into a game. I like doing more than watching.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 14:46:21
I assume gg is good game.

Venom
06-09-2002, 15:17:25
You assume correctly.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 15:22:32
People are so lazy these days how long does it take to type Good game?

Experiment:

Good game good game good game good game good game good game good game good game.

A second and a half.

Venom
06-09-2002, 15:57:21
Cut and pasted.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 15:58:24
Nope. A second and a half for each good game not all of them.

Venom
06-09-2002, 16:01:54
Did you type one handed and keep time with your other hand? Because that would slow you down.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 16:09:25
I used what is known in the trade as a "clock"

Venom
06-09-2002, 18:05:48
But how? Surely the clock couldn't have counted the half second. And if you were watching the clock you were negatively affecting your typing performance.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 18:31:04
That's why I typed it 8 times. To get an average.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 18:31:27
And that's a 100-0 isn't it. Shit.

Venom
06-09-2002, 18:34:39
:D

MDA
06-09-2002, 18:50:52
If you're going to go to the trouble to be polite, you may as well type out the whole word.

Funkodrom
06-09-2002, 19:43:59
Played 2 games against Shakey, my humans against his Undead then Orcs (who he'd never played before)

Great fun. :D

Funkodrom

There are some really things on the net which might speed things up. Well... seemed to work for me a bit at least.

The Blizzard strategy guide:
http://www.battle.net/war3/

Covers the basics pretty well.

And the planetwarcraft strategy forum has some good stuff in it, some crap as well but I learnt a lot from there about initial build orders, hero choices and things.

Funkodrom
07-09-2002, 08:09:04
:hmm: I've never heard them mentioned.

LadyRachel
07-09-2002, 08:12:22
Human cannon towers too. Or Orc raiders. Anything that does siege damage, really.

Funkodrom
07-09-2002, 08:16:30
Are they a building or a unit?

LadyRachel
07-09-2002, 08:18:57
A moving building.

Funkodrom
07-09-2002, 08:21:36
What's it's real name then? There's no such thing as a siege tree.

Fistandantilus

Besides, this (http://www.rtscentral.com/readPosting.asp?PostingId=926209) one is a funny replay involving AP.

Unfortunately is for the old (1.01) version... but I remember it was quite shocking when I saw it. ;)

Shining1
08-09-2002, 00:11:17
Not a good idea to leave your opponent alone for that long in the game:). But that's a brilliant strategy if they do!

Funkodrom
08-09-2002, 13:51:41
Played Rach, got beaten, took her 30 mins though 'cause she was trying a new strategy.

09-09-2002, 08:53:29
I'm level 8, a crap level 8 player.
And I'm forced to play on my laptop until my system gets repaired so my micromanaging is very poor at the moment (damn not having a numeric pad :()

Funkodrom
09-09-2002, 09:01:32
OK, so you're probably better than Rachel and Shiny then. I'm level blank 'cause I've not played any competitive games.

Fistandantilus
09-09-2002, 09:16:20
Well, at lower levels the experience loss for losing a game is reduced so if you play enough games you just have to keep a 50% win loss ratio to reach level 10.

I just have played quite a lot, I don't play level 1-3 player anymore but I'm sure I'd lose to some of them ;)

Funkodrom
09-09-2002, 09:20:06
I have played very little, I'm just trying to learn as fast as possible. :)

I registered on US east and US west trying to set up the game against Rachel, doubt I'll play enough to make those logins stick. I'll probably register as Funkodrom on Europe at some point soon.

If you have ICQ my number's in my profile, I'll give you a game if I see you online. Still be good for me to learn, even if I get slaughtered. :D

Funkodrom

She was clearly going easy on me which was nice of her. :D

Fistandantilus
09-09-2002, 23:44:44

Cool:). I'm up to level 5 but a loooong way still away from getting my icon.

Can't work out whether I played 3 really crap people tonight or whether I've gotten a lot better and am attacking early enough to disrupt mass Shamans, etc.

How long away is 'tonight'?

Funkodrom
10-09-2002, 12:06:10
I haven't registered in Europe yet. I might be online tonight or I might see if Shakey wants to play.

Shiny; I'd say tonight is about 6+ hours away for me 5+ for Fist.
