In my teenage years, I really liked Def Leppard.
I liked the guitars, I admired the drums, and I liked the sense of fun. I liked listening to a band who would take the piss out themselves and weren't afraid to release songs with stupid lyrics.

So I bought the latest album, X (their 10th album - how many brain cells did it take to think that up?), and it seems Def Leppard have done something no self-respecting rocker should ever do - they've GROWN UP and GOT SENSIBLE.
X is filled with radio-friendly, poppy, "nice" songs. Some of them are listenable, a couple are even interesting, but on the whole it's background music, not something you'd actively listen to.
There's only one "guitary" song in the whole 15 and you can't help get the impression it's only there because Phil Collen threw a tantrum and demanded a decent guitar break.

Overall, X? Our survey said X (insert Family Fortunes noise here)

They've hired Britney Spears' producers. I think that says it all really...

Now, let's talk about the eighties band X instead. I'm considering buying a two-albums-on-one-CD set of their first two punkier albums, but Amazon is out of stock. Any idea where to get it?

Could try the Circle Jerks instead...

I thought you meant the early socal hardcore band X, but alas not.

Def Leppard? Eughhh...I always thought they were pretty crap. Hardly Sheffield's finest...the self proclaimed 'music capital of the North'. I think Manchester would have something to say about that...

Come now, Sheffield is the home of Warp Records.

I actually bought Hysteria, I'm not very proud of that but I was only 14.

In the bargain bin? Any old excuse eh? I bet if Stalin had got Hitler alive, Hitler's excuse would have been 'The holocaust? Erm...I found it in the bargain bin'...

The best X album was More Fun in the New World. Great stuff.

But as far as Def Leppard goes I could never stand them.

God, I hate Def Leppard. I always have.

I hate most metal, but that's beside the point.

Well Def Leppard seem to epitomise everything that was shit about 80s hair metal. And believe me, there is a lot of shit in that genre :D
