Anybody try/heard of this? It's getting some high marks from reviewers and sounds interesting. Basically an operations level strategy game based on the US/Japan war in the Pacific. Might try it if I get some time.

You got me to click on the link, so that's something.

Well shit, that looks like the replacement for PTO II I've been looking for. I'll have to make sure I get it when I get back from NZ.

oooh, I used to have a cardboard counter/hexmap game for the war in the Pacific - might have just been for Wake Island - probably an SSI.

I might give this a shot, since my Allied/Panzer General games won't run since I got XP.

What is it with you people and trouble running games in XP? I have yet to have a problem with any game.

I've discovered a few tricks for getting games to *install* on my XP box. Generally, my Win9x games, if they have a problem is: A) Refuses to install on the OS, or B) Only has a couple of options for Sound (It's a total bitch to play pinball without sound.)

Trick for installing? Program Compatibility Wizard. Us it to pick the installer. Presto. Now it installs. Might not work, but you got to get the game installed.

Oh... another old trick. Copy the whole CD to HD. Play from that directory. I had to do this with several Tomb Raiders, back on my Win98 box! (And a bunch of other titles as well.) That's not XP specific, but I've got a few things I run like that on my XP box.

Which reminds me... I need to Compat my MoM installer... MoM won't have sound (it only has original hardcoded SB, Roland, and PC speaker options), but you don't have to have sound for that. :D

This looks like a very good game.

But Hearts of Iron is supposed to come out soon too...

15-08-2002, 11:56:49
And do you have a link to that one so that we may compare?

DS, I swear, I've never had any problem with any game I have on XP. Even the old ones. I guess that means I'm due.

Can't play Daggerfall, for instance, because the installer runs in DOS.

Allied General - I tried compatability mode - no luck- it appeared to install but didn't run IIRC. Been a few months since I tried.

Haven't tried copying the entire CD to HD, that might be interesting.

Use it to pick the installer
Damn, I was using it AFTER installation. I'll have to try Allied or Panzer General again. Those were fun games.

There was another cool game called Russia on the Apple][c/e that was incredibly fun as well. Hex map games. Mmmm.

I find it highly annoying that there is no demo for it, but skimming the forums and a few reviews gives one a very favorable impression.

Now all I have to do is find time to go get it and play it. I should be able to squeeze that in sometime around 2006.

I will say this...there are a huge bunch of dorks over at their forums.

I also wish it was for more than just the South Pacific. I want the whole Pacific.

So in response to my demands the same company is making War in the Pacific: The Struggle Against the Japanese.

Except it's due out in March 03. :(

Anyone played this yet? It sounds fun yet perhaps over micromanaged.

face it venom, no one cares about your sad little wargames

06-09-2002, 15:58:07
But I didn't start the thread. I just like killing Japs.

06-09-2002, 16:18:51
Yeah, this thread is about MY sad little wargames, thank you very much!

And, no, I haven't tried it yet, lots of other projects absorbing my time and money right now.

06-09-2002, 16:20:23
In fact, I'd completely forgotten about this game and this thread. Imagine my surprise at seeing a thread started by me near the top of the list! That almost never happens outside the Qweeg, er, Fiction forum. ;)
