I'll have to get the latest Half Life patch and the full Counterstrike mod which is 120 meg. I can probably just download them.

Counterstrike and TFC are too easy. I usually get kicked from most servers because I get accused of cheating. I hate the counterstrike community on most popular servers, the small clan servers are great though.

I recommend you get Day of Defeat, it's a WW2 mod, and much more tactical. It's a lot like RtCWolfenstein multiplayer: except the hlaf life engine is much, much better.

i'll look out for you online :shoot:

to return to the thread title, why don't we organise some online gaming fun for CG players - maybe a CGCG: CounterGlow CommonwealthGames - post suggestions for games to be played in this thread?

i say:

some FPS (counterstrike, RtCW, etc)
some RTS (warcraft III? but i don't have it....)
some flying game (like IL2 or X-wing vs tie-fighter)

Funkodrom
29-07-2002, 15:54:41
I was in on Friday and Shakey was out. Wierd.

I've got X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance which is better.

MattHiggs

Got X-Wing Vs. Tie.

Can I suggest something like AoK or AoE for RTS?

I'm shit at AoK but a lot of people own it.

MattHiggs

RtS games aren't my strong point. I always tend to build a huge, well organised base and lots of defence towers etc... then I get beat before I have time to build a lovely planned army :(

I think I might still have X-Wing vs Tie Fighter. If I recall correctly, I was unsurpassed in the ability to ram other ships while evading fire, a unique if somewhat limited defensive strategy that I got quite unintentionally good at before giving up in disgust and going back to playing checkers. LSN's the only other online type game I own.

Funkodrom
30-07-2002, 13:33:45
It's a shame no-one else has X-Wing Alliance, a far superior game. Still XvT is fun enough.

Still the same controls as the original X-Wing as well. :D

Alliance looked very good. I never bought it as I have yet to find time to even finish the various Star Wars/Freespace space combat games I already have. I would be very willing to get it in order to play against other people from here, though again finding time to do so might be a problem.

Vincent

X-Wing Vs Tie fighter the first training mission is to fly around and identify ships/containers, if I remember correctly.

Got the disk last night, thanks! Didn't have time to install it but look forward to blowing some of you away soon.

Anything I need to know to play Counterstrike? I know vague principles you either protect or try and rescue hostages and you can buy weapons or something? Is there a decent guide?

Vincent
01-08-2002, 09:40:06
millions
most people use a headset to communicate during the game.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 09:42:21
Aha! Well I have a headset thanks to you.

Fuck it, I'll just run round shooting everyone as normal until I work it out.

Vincent
01-08-2002, 09:47:59
Well, there are teams, you know.
I stopped playing CS because of cheating the annoying teenager chat about cheating  cheatchat
I can't understand why people think it's fun to win because you use some shit cheat software.

shitcheatchat whoooooooooohooooooo

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 09:49:20
Yes, I knew there were teams, I'll just try not to shoot the people on my team too much. :D

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 09:50:01
BTW I've tried reading Counterstrike guides before but they seemed really anal and it put me off which was why I asked about a good one.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 09:58:13
Planet halflife guide doesn't explain how you get money. By shooting people?

Vincent
01-08-2002, 10:03:47
For shooting people (player only) and for winning (team).
You lose your equipment if you die (firearms, ammo, armour), if it gets damaged (armour) or if you use it (grenades, ammo).

There are some good bots available, I recommend you try these first. The buy phase is tricky if you didn't play it before, learning the keys. There are macros available (and, of course, aiming macros etc)

I had a brilliant guide from a gaming magazine.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 10:15:10
Shit... by the sounds of it I won't have to bother with the buying phase, I won't get any money anyway.

What do you mean by macros? Like the key binding things for talk commands? I never quite worked out how to do them.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 10:19:52
It's been out since '99! When it came out I was playing a fair bit of HL DM. I haven't really played any FPS online since then, I'm going to be a little rusty!

We should have a Serious Sam Co-Op game online at some point as well. That game rules.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 10:25:22
In fact... I definitely haven't played Half Life for at least a year because Rachel somehow broke my installation so it only played at about 4 frames per second.

Vincent
01-08-2002, 10:25:46
SerSam is nice.

I never used the macros. Usually you use the same keystroke at the buying phase, so the macro does it automatically. There is a limited time and if you hit the wrong key you're naked.

You can pick up weapons of dead opponents

Another thing is the campers. Thy really spoil the game

Vincent
01-08-2002, 10:31:39
BTW Nobody ever accused me of being a cheater, but the tell me to come back when I'm sober quite often.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 10:34:58
This game looks really complicated. I'm daunted. I can't see how you'd ever get enough money to get one of the good guns.

Picking them up seems a good plan!

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 10:37:40
I didn't know the voice chat was now integrated directly into the game! Cool.

Vincent
01-08-2002, 10:38:19
It's not that hard. Sometimes a team of complete losers wins, because their strategy isn't one of the classic strategies and puzzles the opponents. At least you get a kill from time to time. IIRC the losing teams gets some money as well, but maybe that's wishfull thinking

Vincent

Have a look when you get home.

I hate starting new games like this when everyone knows what they're doing and I don't. It's always embarassing asking obvious questions and doing the wrong stuff.

In Return to Castle Wolfenstein I just picked someone to follow and hoped for the best.

Vincent
01-08-2002, 10:55:01
There are some things you have to know before starting a game.
For example you hav to place a bomb in some maps. There are marked areas wher the bomb has to be placed.
I recommend to use the bots and to check out the maps.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 11:01:53
Does everyone start with a bomb then?

I'm a bit impatient with practicing on my own.

Vincent
01-08-2002, 11:05:28
The bots are quite clever and realistic.

A random player has the bomb. If he gets killed another player has to pick it up. You got to activate the bomb. The other team may deactivate the bomb if it was activated.

I messed it up during my first games because I didn't know how

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 11:08:05
Shit... how do you do that? I saw instructions for picking up hostages (forgotten how now)

Maybe I'll see if I can get Shakey to give me a game on the LAN with some bots.

Might have to be after NZ though.

Vincent
01-08-2002, 11:11:07
Autually I forgot how to do it. You got to ready the activation thingy and press the mouse button for some time.
You got to talk to the hostages ("E" IIRC?).

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 11:13:00
Yeah. E to collect them and get them to follow you, something else to drop them off.

Can you buy weapons in the middle of a game if you collect money or just in between rounds?

Vincent
01-08-2002, 11:14:20
No, you can only buy durin the first few seconds IIRC or there is a buying zone, but that may be another game/mod

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 11:15:08
It is hard. I'll have to get Shakey to work it out so he can teach me. :)

Vincent
01-08-2002, 11:16:27
Oh, I see. You got your own personal bot.

hmm missed all the posts in this thread...

Vincents advice is spot on - and i can also understand his frustrations with cheaters, lame american kids, etc. Now that my work/clan mates have this server i can guarantee a nice atmosphere when i play and it is much better.

but mike if you fancy a go, me you and the shaker (and anyone else who fancies it) should just arrange to join the server i play on when it is empty sometime and then you can learn without fear of being a n00b :D

It is complicated to begin with but it becomes ever so simple and fun after a few goes.

It does take time to learn your way round the maps, like any FPS - and it is very unforgiving because when you die you have to wait for the round to end to respawn (Could be five minutes max but mroe likely 1 or 2). But that also makes it more compelling and challenging.

Funkodrom
01-08-2002, 11:22:40
Yeah, a lot of the FPS online community are total wankers, I don't want to actually have to work with them I just want to shoot them.

Some RtCW servers I went on had decent people though.

I've been meaning to have another go with CS for a while now.. just havent had the time recently. So when are you going to play?

King_Ghidra
01-08-2002, 12:12:07
normally it is busy from about 9 onwards on weeknights - that is when the <evil> clan themselves usually play. Then it is often full because it only has 12 slots (and there are about 8 <evil> guys)

If we were to organise to play it would be better to get on a bit earlier, say 7-8, then we wouldn't be disturbed (or kicked :D).

On weekends it can be empty all day sometimes, but sunday nights are clan matches.

Sorry to get back to the point.

Me and RC have played Combat Mission, and I'm now playing LoD with the demo version. Its very cool game. At the moment its very close ( I think) whos on top (probably LoD on objectives, me on points). Its just a shame the demo doesnt include the quick battle generator - this game really picks up when you have to chose you troops from the ground up rather than run with what the scenarios give you. In this game I would swap half my troops if I could esp if I could get a decent AT gun!

they normally only password it late evening to make sure the clan guys can all get on.

I think you'd be surpised how many empty servers there are out there...cheating and bad attitude has driven a lot of people away from CS. Not to mention the fact that it is positively ancient now :)

I've played for a couple of nights on CS public servers. People in general are incredibly rude and unhelpful to 'newbies'. Disgusting.

Vincent

Yeah, annoying.

Vincent

I have XWing Alliance, someone could end me a copy of CS, as my cable access was shutoff today because Cox couldn't monitor my computer (surprise! assholes), at least it isn't my money that was washed down the toilet. Now I get to jump parsecs at a time like Venom with my dialup connection.

Played Op Flashpoint online, I was decent long as I stayed away from the vehicles, I can't drive/pilot those things worth a shit. I'm a fucking sitting target in anything but the fucking jeep which I can at least drive. I can't command a tank for shit, can't pilot a helicopter for shit, and the only way I could take off in the Thunderbird was to fly off the fucking cliff. :) The manual wasn't exactly too fucking helpful. To finish the campaign, I had to use the cheat and play just the levels without flying or tank commanding required, else I was fucking dead.

Also played Delta Force:Land Warrior until my own clanmates got tired of me killing them in ffa matches (since I never went to the armory, as I was a conservative bastard, they kill themselves going to claymore it again thinking that I might have gotten killed by the claymore on those times I did die.) When they started teaming up, 8 to 10 against 1, just to kill me, when that wasn't working out too good (well it was, just not enough for them, as I'd still take out a few of them), then camping at my respawn point, with 5 or so guys blasting the fuck out of me when I respawned, that's when I left. Joined a local rival clan for a couple weeks until they realized who the "new" guy was and refused to play them long as I was there. So I had my fill of that game and quit it with the satisfaction of knowing that I ruined their day by showing them no matter how many kills or what rank they are on Novaworld, it's skill that counts, not your fucking ranking.

The one thing I liked about flashpoint and Land warrior was that one to two hits would kill you pretty much every time. Your not some walking armored tank that takes several greandes a few clips of 5.76 in you to kill you.
