View Full Version : Article series idea: review old games

20-07-2002, 17:16:21
You’re all sick of new games. With the odd exception, they are just re-hashes of classics you played years ago. So why not review those classics? Benefits:
Pretty much everyone here has played a game that they enjoyed. Few are playing a current game that they enjoy.
There’s no worries about writing the review late, only to find everyone’s bored of it. They’re bored of it anyway.
It gives you an excuse to revisit the games that you loved.I’m willing to start with Heroes of Might and Magic II, once I’ve completed the good campaign (I don’t want to review any game I haven’t completed).

I have never played HOMMII, just a demo I believe... is that the one you cannot move your armies around w/o having a hero leading them?

I remember the tactical combat was very good but my memory fails often...

And yes, I think this idea is brilliant. :)

20-07-2002, 17:46:09
Correct, you cannot move armies without a hero. The tactical combat is kinda good, it depends what you’re expecting :).

Vincent started this with his M.U.L.E review.

21-07-2002, 11:28:15
Oh yeah, I forgot that long-running series of one.

How old is DOOM, now?

21-07-2002, 18:16:45
93 I think.

21-07-2002, 19:24:41
Thats old.

22-07-2002, 11:59:43
Right now I'm playing all old games. No new games at all.

22-07-2002, 12:48:15
Sounds like a good idea to me. :cute:

22-07-2002, 17:34:27
I'm play SMAX and the Sims right now. Is that too new?

22-07-2002, 18:03:54
I can't believe you admit you play SMAX.

22-07-2002, 18:32:07
 and he's not the only one ;)

Go right ahead. It’s mroe to get away from the idea that things have to be reviewed as soon as they are published.

22-07-2002, 22:16:21
It's a good principle. So many games seem great for 3 weeks then you never play them again.

22-07-2002, 23:53:51
I've busted back into Final Fantasy 2 and Super Soccer thanks to my SNES emulator, as well as Freespace 2 as well as empire earth.

23-07-2002, 08:41:06
Empire Earth? Well, it's not too bad, for your standard RTS AoE clone. FF2? You are a real bastard Venom. Please provide me details in PM on how you are swinging that. :D

Would a review about SMACX be accepted here? Bets? 10000000 to 1, against? ;)

23-07-2002, 08:43:50
Of course it would.

23-07-2002, 09:30:48
I thought RC enjoy CM line? At least for a while...

Funky, you think so? I wonder who would dare try then. ;)

23-07-2002, 09:34:18
I wouldn't, I've never played it. :D

How about plain-vanilla SMAC?

I have yet to acquire the expansion.

Vanilla SMAC...I only have the chocolate version.

As I said in another thread (did I?), I just realised that I still have Alien Legacy installed on my DOS partition.... and I never did complete it...

Frankly, I now feel much more attracted to go back playing that game, rather than finish my current SMAX pbems... (Fist, you didn't hear this!).

Only problem, is that my PII333 is a bit TOO fast for that DOS game.
The game is a real-time single-system space adventure, and althought you can adjust speed, even at the slowest the events occur sometimes too quickly, and screens scroll all the way just as I barely touch the arrow keys...
Maybe it's just that I've become too much slower with age...

I'll review that if I'll complete it.
Chances are, no one has ever not only played it, but even heard about it.

PS: yes, I have a true DOS partition on my 98SE machine, in order to still play MoM and Machiavelli without problems...

Besides, I'm playing much more WC3 and TOAW than SMAX... ;)

Oh, and you're right, never heard about Alien Legacy...

31-07-2002, 13:20:29
this one? (http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/alien.html)

Looks something like EU2 in space.
Oh, and the reviewer doesn't seem excited about the game...

31-07-2002, 20:24:11
sounds better than Captain Blood, at least.

Libel! I'll sue. I have enjoyed games, Beta1 (who thinks I hate every game).

CM series certainly, Europa Universalis 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2...

The list...well....not endless but there may be others too.

Better than Captain Blood? Is that possible?

03-08-2002, 06:55:51
Hey Qaj! How about an Angband review?

03-08-2002, 08:24:27
Actually I like new games:).

03-08-2002, 08:37:30
What? Just NWN and Warcraft3 and MorrowWind and DungeonSiege, right, Shining1?

04-08-2002, 05:46:20
And Baldur's Gate2 and Disciples2 and Serious Sam and Age of Kings and Mechwarrior4 and Diablo2 and probably a few other titles because I haven't looked at any recent FPS games or puzzle games.

06-08-2002, 04:53:55
Serious Sam can't be a new game. It's available for Palm and Pocket PC! You mean SS2?

I'm really not the review writing type. Though I might give it a try just to prove to myself again I'm not a review writing kind of guy :)

Nav wanted me to review a game of some kind, so that we don't have just music articles.

I'm thinking SkyRoads. Any better ideas?

09-08-2002, 10:48:33
Never heard of it?

It was like the #1 shareware game we used to play when I was a kid, and it's been made Freeware now.

In fact, I'll write a review of it and that'll tell you more.

Do we do screenshots?

09-08-2002, 11:37:12
yes, just upload them when you the review.
