View Full Version : I bought AoW2

$20 less then the other games I was looking into and it's less RAM heavy, so I can delay getting additional RAM for a little bit more. I know at least a few of you other there got it too. :)

Didn't get it. Not yet, anyway.

Never finished the campaign in the first one, it got too hard playing on a million different depths at once.

I never played the first one. I haven't started the campaign yet. I probably will after I mess around a little more. It's got an HoMM feel to it. :) I'm gonna make a map from stratch sometime soon with their editor too.

Quantify that. If it has a HOMM 2 feel to it, just try and stop me buying it. If it has a HOMM 1/3/4 feel, then I can leave it.

AoW was quite fun, I've played the demo for AoW2 which was good for a demo. I just haven't had the money to plunk out for the full game yet. I'm sure I will by the end of the summer though.

I've always thought the graphics and game play were better than all the HOMM series, but that is just me.

Except HOMM 2.

Sean: What are you trying to say? :)

I only really played HoMM2, so that's the only one I can really compare it to. You got tactical battles with a few nice (or annoying depending on things :)) touches like that fact that an Archer can accidentally hit someone that's partially in the way of thier traget.

17-07-2002, 19:12:07
But is it better?

The one really good different thing I heard about AoW2 is that multiplayer turns are done simultaneously. This is essential, there is no other way you can stand to play any online game these days.

Of course, this might also really suck.

18-07-2002, 07:21:23
Was the same in AoW1 IIRC. Still the PBEM community was/is much larger than the IP one.

Besides, I don't think TBS are well suited for online play at all. Turns require planning and nobody likes to rush them, plus an actual game lasts much longer than the one of average RTS. No way a game of AoW can be completed in less than 30 mins.

And the simultaneous mode isn't all that well thought-out anyway. The turn starts, and - bang! - you have three fights on your hands before you even know what's happening. Most simulturn systems allow for players setting up their actions during the turn and having them resolved when the last player is done.

But AoW2 is an very nice game otherwise.

Hi Goob < waves >!

I just bought it too, but.. I didn't install it yet, and I will not in the next weeks. I stil have a couple of SMAC pbems on hold since 3 weeks... I can't afford to get hooked in other games.

RE AoWs, I got and played the AoW1 demo halfway, because I had not the time, not because I didn't like it.
Then I bought it but then barely played few turns of it. I remember that the multilanguage localisation messed up the setup bigtime.
I now only found AoW2 in the localised version, this means that it must be around since sometimes (and I also imagined that because of the low price...). That's bad, because I browsed the manual, and the translation is ridiculous as usual :(

PS: I never played, nor even have the barest idea, any HoMM game.
To me, AoW is the closest existing game to the milestone that MoM was.

MoM will probably always be the best game ever, but AoW2 is definately a good game too. Good Campaign i think. :)

If you've never played Master of Magic... I feel bad for you. Master of Magic is.... Fantasy Civ. Only about 5,000 times better then Civ1.

I'm hoping QuickSilver gets to make MoM2.

Honestly, I'd be amazed if they equal the quality of MoM1 if it's ever made by anyone. It's a different gaming world now.

just to avoid misunderstandings...

If "you" is intended as generic, and you just wanted to assert a general concept, I couldn't agree more with you.

If you got that I never played MoM myself, then excuse my english.

Someone was comparing AoW2 to HoMM series.
I never played one, but I DO play MoM, and I just wanted to say that for me AoW compares to MoM, as I can't compare it to HoMM.
As a matter of fact, I STILL play some MoM from time to time, did it last week. As I said in another thread here, I have a true DOS partition on my 98SE PC expressly to play old DOS games which I could not get to properly configure the EMS memory for in a 98 DOS session.
This means mainly MoM.

I never played any of those games mentioned.

01-08-2002, 09:06:55
Loser. :p

01-08-2002, 09:08:16
I don't even know what AoW stands for.

01-08-2002, 09:14:24
I looked it up.

Besides, it took me quite a while to realize what ISS stood for :nervous:
(and I don't know almost anything about first person shooters...)
