View Full Version : Finally saw Memento

Venom

Interesting movie. If only because of the way the order they played it. Really good though. Many, many, many layers of complexity to it.

Bloody fantastic film that, really plays with your sympathies for the characters. Excelellent, one of the most interesting and original films I've seen in a long while.

If you've got the DVD of it, there's a hidden feature where you can watch the film played out in the opposite order. Makes everyting completely different.

Venom

I didn't know that about the DVD. Interesting. It would make for an entirely different movie. Not as exciting or novel I think, but it'd be nice to be able to see everything pieced together and see if my mind was able to put everything together the right way.

Without giving anything away- whats the film about? (sounds like a non-english language film- is it?)

FunkyFingers
03-07-2002, 15:11:12
It's an English language film.
It's about a bloke who's lost his memory and is trying to piece his life back together again. I won't say anymore than that without spoiling it. Go see it, it's brilliant.

Venom
03-07-2002, 15:14:52
It's very hard not to spoil anything about this movie. Every little bit is important.

Funkodrom
03-07-2002, 15:15:53
It's on rotation on Sky movies at the moment I think, I'll try and see it.

FunkyFingers
03-07-2002, 15:27:06
Do or do not, there is no try

Sean
03-07-2002, 15:28:39
Yes there is. That’s why we have a word for it.

Funkodrom
03-07-2002, 15:29:15
It'll probably be on at the same time as Big Brother so I probably won't really try that hard to watch it.

FunkyFingers
03-07-2002, 15:29:31
Bah, he is no jedi

Funkodrom
03-07-2002, 15:31:03
I'm doing not and not trying, quicker and easier is the dark side.

FunkyFingers
03-07-2002, 15:31:50
that's why you need the butt plug, your dark side is loose

Qweeg
03-07-2002, 18:48:46
There was no need for that image Funky, you apologize to Funko this minute.

FunkyFingers
04-07-2002, 08:25:55
I was quite proud of that one actually

Qweeg
04-07-2002, 13:17:40
I can tell alot of thought went into it:)

FunkyFingers
04-07-2002, 14:10:54
Certainly did.
Memento though, bloody brilliant. Right until the end of the film you're still not sure of your sympathies for all of the main characters, really manipulates your feelings as a viewer.

Venom
08-07-2002, 13:39:19
Right when they show you Carrie Anne Moss' true motivation, I was all messed up. I had no idea what to think and then when her boyfriend showed up at the end that was actually the beginning...

FunkyFingers
08-07-2002, 13:54:48
I still not convinced that I know what her true motivation actually was. Bloody good film.

Venom
08-07-2002, 14:19:15
When he punched her in the face, my mouth just dropped open.

FunkyFingers
08-07-2002, 14:22:39
Me too. Very unexpected that was.

Damn that was a good film

King_Ghidra
08-07-2002, 15:58:44
presumably Venom's last two posts have been designed to ruin the enjoyment of anybody who hasn't seen the film yet

FunkyFingers
08-07-2002, 16:29:00
Yeah, what a bastard!

Actually, no I don't think what he's said will spoil any of this film, it's too damn good. There's any number of other, even more confusing and twisting and dramatic moments.

Venom
08-07-2002, 18:20:55
I didn't give a single thing away. I said someone punched a girl in the face and her motivation was a suprise. That tells you nothing.

King_Ghidra
09-07-2002, 09:53:38
actually it literally tells me two things...

Venom
09-07-2002, 12:23:38
Two very unspecific things. Who punches who? And what girl?

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 13:07:48
You won't know until you watch the film will you really?!

Sean
11-07-2002, 13:11:39
But when you watch the film you will be expecting those things to happen.

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 13:16:06
But to whom, you don't know, and to be honest, there's so much else going on anyway, it really hasn't taken away any of the suspense factor.

Venom
11-07-2002, 13:26:43
In today's movie environment, saying someone will get punched in the face is like saying there will be actors in the movie.

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 14:24:21
"actors"? You don't get those in George Lucas movies anymore :D

Venom
11-07-2002, 14:40:08
Don't forget the voice actors!

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 14:53:13
I thought they were computer synthesised too

Venom
11-07-2002, 15:11:53
From snails.

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 15:27:59
Gay Snails?

Venom
11-07-2002, 16:27:27
Are there any other kind?

Roland
11-07-2002, 16:27:34

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 16:28:35
:shoot:

FunkyFingers
11-07-2002, 16:28:58
I got Roland, yipee :D

Funkodrom

I saw it last night. Very good movie. I think Carrie Anne's motivation becomes obvious as you continue back in time.

Drekkus
15-07-2002, 12:16:00
I went to see Memento twice in the theater. Never did that with a movie before. After the second time the true meaning got me. Only one minor point where I thought they made a mistake. But a briljant movie.
I should go rent it again. I really wonder what the film would look like when played backwards.

Funkodrom
15-07-2002, 12:17:18
The true meaning? :hmm:

Drekkus
15-07-2002, 12:18:36
The motive of the main character.

Funkodrom
15-07-2002, 12:20:14
Yes, that's tricky. I'm not too sure what I think about that.

FunkyFingers
15-07-2002, 12:24:19
I'm sure it would completely alter your perpective.

Great movie

Funkodrom
15-07-2002, 12:42:37
The main character being Leonard or Teddy? Maybe I'll watch it again if it's on again.

Drekkus
15-07-2002, 12:55:40
Main character is Leonard ofcourse.

That's what I thought... I'll go to the spoilers thread...

I too have finally seen this, and what a fantastic film it is. Very, very cleverly conceived and produced.
Great acting, incredible depth, everything everyone else has said really!

Two thumbs up!

See KG, I didn't ruin shit for you.

only because i forgot what you ruined :p

memory eh?

Venom

Memory is a fickle thing.

Funkodrom

What were we talking about?

Venom

Cheese I think.

Noisy
23-01-2003, 20:34:37
Just bought the DVD. I'll be sure to forget to tell you what I thought of it.

Funkodrom
24-01-2003, 09:35:35
You should have told us what you thought of it before you bought it shouldn't you?

King_Ghidra

don't believe his lies

Drekkus
24-01-2003, 17:59:05
what does the card say, KG?

FunkyFingers
25-01-2003, 09:55:16
Bought this on DVD in the New Year sales, fan-blooming-tastic.
Anyone watched the backwards version on the DVD yet?
It's hidden in the "special features" sub menu, pretty obvious if you look for it.

Funkodrom
27-01-2003, 09:46:42
Nope.

FunkyFingers
27-01-2003, 23:49:57
nor me

Sean
27-01-2003, 23:56:08
Well, I thought it was like Requiem for a Dream—rather gimmicky, bucketloads of self-conscious style, but wheareas Requiem for a Dream at least had Ellen Burstyn putting in a fantastic performance, Memento did not. It was enjoyable, but not all everyone has made it out to be.

FunkyFingers
28-01-2003, 18:08:09
Well you're wrong

Sean
28-01-2003, 18:21:13
What was so fantastic about it, then?

Debaser
28-01-2003, 19:30:29
It's an unusual and interesting premice, directed in a genuinly original way, with a strong cast.

Sean
28-01-2003, 19:49:04
It is an interesting premise, but:

Strong cast, Guy Pearce? His performance was rather mediocre, as was that of that Joe Pesci wannabe, Joe Pantoliano.

What is the genuinely original way? You cannot mean that it’s told backwards, surely?

Debaser
28-01-2003, 20:00:38
Good point, there are loads of other films told backwards, it's not really a very original idea at all. And the way practically every major characters personality and motivation swing drastically from good guy/girl to bad guy/girl in the space of a day while remaining consistant and believable isn't particularly clever or special in any way.

Sean
28-01-2003, 20:19:23
It is clever, that’s exactly the word I would use.

Don't agree with that at all, i think pearce was excellent, playing a very difficult role

and maybe joe pantoliano is in wannabe joe pesci mode in films like the matrix, but i thought he was highly restrained in memento, better than pearce

Venom

Dammit I agree with KG.

Darkstar
30-01-2003, 04:09:58
You've agreed with Lurker and KG? The shame! The shame! Just kill yourself now, Lurker.

Venom

I've never agreed with Lurker!

Darkstar

You have blocked that from your conscious memory, have you? I wondered how you managed to survive that all this time. I guess we know.

Mightytree

Finally saw it too ...

Really good movie. The comments about Carrie-Anne Moss' true intentions though in this thread are really unnecessary. They didn't ruin the movie for me, but they certainly weren't helping. It was quite a big spoiler in the first half.

Venom
10-02-2003, 01:56:04
I only promised not to ruin the movie. Nothing more.
