View Full Version : Remember when alternative rock music was actually alternative rock?

Now radio-popular new "alternative" music is primarily just pop music being passed off as alternative. The fact that the local alternative music station plays a fair amount of the most popular alternative songs from the 90s and 00s really doesn't do most of this new stuff any favors. Stuff like Mumford and Sons (and anything featuring a banjo really), Imagine Dragons, Lumineers, most 21 Pilots songs, and the dozen completely interchangeable bands featuring primarily keyboards and a drum machine and a female singer would have never appeared on an "alternative rock" station like 8-10 years ago. I'm basically stuck trying to figure out which of the wusses in programming let Highly Suspect slip through the cracks, as that's literally the only "new" band I've heard this year that made me go "Yes, I'd classify this as rock". Heck, even many of the long time ago bands have strayed from being alternative. I'm looking at you, Linkin Park.

What happened? :mr_b:

In my day real music was like real music and not like that stuff they play today (my dad anno 1978)

I have a theory that music peaks when you are in high school and college. That's the prime part of your life in terms of triggering nostalgia. Everything afterward gets compared to your rose-tinted glasses version on that era.

Koshko

This theory is also why we freak out whenever they reboot a movie (Transformers/Ghostbusters/etc) from our era. Instead of acknowledging that they are remaking these movies for another generation of people, we instead think they are just pissing on our youth.

Most kids today around here pretty much only listen to pop, hip-hop, or country. Sad to see society go astray like this.

The Mad Monk

If TOAX is the winner, it cannot be the alternative.

...or is that alternate?

zmama
16-08-2017, 14:07:00
Ok then TOAX is first runner up!

The Mad Monk

What would you classify it as?

The Mad Monk
24-08-2017, 18:17:49
I'm having a devil of a time finding TOAX links, other than that one right there. The soundcloud link plays much longer than the initial two minutes indicated, and I'm really not sure I'm still listening to the same band. Some of it sounds vaguely techno, other pieces sound like jazz. Mostly German, except one piece in English.

Koshko
24-08-2017, 20:15:42
What would you classify it as?

Kind of punk maybe? That would fall under Alternative technically but not be Alternative they'd ever play on the radio here.

The Mad Monk
24-08-2017, 21:52:15
Punk? Hmmm. Some of the earlier soundcloud selections, sure, but there are others I would call the opposite of punk.
