You know you are an adult when you appreciate getting socks as a Christmas gift. It means you won't have to buy your own socks for another year.

A book about Custer. I am guessing it doesn't end well for him.

Lots of food including a good stockpile of chocolate, my sister's preserves and dried wild mushrooms. They know me well.

Best gift I gave was a titanium frying pan. Almost put my luggage over the weight limit.

That article says a fish monger in Reading sells fresh carp to eastern European immigrants for 11 a KG. Dear god, that is like $16.28 per kg or ~ $8 per pound.

Around here carp is practically given away. I have seen it as low as $0.75 a pound to as much as $1.99 a pound. I had no idea people in the UK would pay $8 a pound. That is specialty steak level prices and a decent steak might go for $6 a pound.

That is some random specialty fish market in the Midwest but even they have whole dressed carp (meaning guts removed but head still on) for $1.80 a pound. I would consider that expensive too.

How does the Smelly Alley Fish Company in Reading justify $8 per pound? That is outrageous.

Supply and demand I guess, same as for Turkey. I know my colleague says she doesn't like Carp, but it is traditional.

not the carp I'm familiar with - the one's I've caught are useless bottom feeders, almost no meat on them

but they're fun to throw rolls and buns at!

We have fish and perogies and mac and cheese on Christmas Eve, a second Thanksgiving on Christmas Day, crab legs on New Year's Eve, and ham on New Years.

We had roasted duck with leeks and escarole for Christmas. I like to do something different ;)

Calico!

It looks more like mutant Siamese. Both Batman and Merry (her uncle and dad, not necessarily respectively since we don't know) are her spitting image, and males can't be calico, or else they end up sterile with two X chromosomes.

I an already under her control, zmama. It took about 5 minutes.

Those are not poop treats, though they do eventually compromise poop. Does that count?

Well, at least she's not cross-eyed. :)

My great uncle had a siamese cat that would go for a walk on a leash. Strangest cat I'd ever seen.

Batman sometimes looks cross-eyed, and Emma has close-set eyes, for a cat. I have several who tolerate leash and harness.

Speaking of oddball looking cats, one day I hope to own a sphinx, though their tendency to exhibit certain health problems makes me sad (as with all specialized modern breeds, it seems).

Well, they're small and round-ish, I thought they might be bunny flavor.

Like Shakey said, basic supply and demand.

Fish is very expensive here generally, due to low supply and high demands. Food is generally more expensive here too.
