I'm on Maui, bitches! Ahahahaha, suck it East Coast!

These islands are full of Japanese schoolgirls, it's actually a little creepy. I keep expecting one to whip out a sword twice her height or morph into a demon, or both... And then kill everyone.

I would complain about the traffic, but there's no snow here, and it's purty.

By coincidence I am off to Hawaii too - to escape the unseasonably mild winter. Not enough serenity on Maui, so I am off to the Big Island.

Okay so different time (in a week) and different island. So maybe not that much of a coincidence.

Honolulu is crowded and full of Lurker clones. The Pearl Harbor stuff was really nice. My grandfather was a welder in the Navy there in '44-'45, so I might be biased.

Maui is much less crowded and touristy if you get away from the hotels and we liked it better (still plenty of roadside stands with banana bread or fresh coconut  ). If we come back, the Big Island is at the top of the list.

Sunrise on the big mountain was nice, and very cold.

We hiked halfway across the Lahaina-Pali trail and back, and then an easier one up to a big 400 foot waterfall out on the Hana end of the island.

Mongoose are like big... very angry... squirrels.

Returning to the Islands in a couple of months. It is nice there if you like that sort of sea, sun and sand.

I can recommend the Big Island. Helps if your wife is a travel agent who gets all the deals and does the work organizing the trip.

Highlights: snorkeling at a black sands beach near Hilo, hike right down into the caldera at Kilauea Iki, helicopter tour of fresh lava flows and close up view of an active volcano, night time manta ray swim near Kona, macadamia nut farm & processing plant tour, seeing a mother humpback whale and her calf close up, Hilton Waikoloa Village, our Air B&B house at the edge of Hilo with jungle out the back door, accidentally swimming with big sea turtles...

Lowlight: me driving (I do not own a car and seldom drive) and my wife navigating (no sense of direction and does not understand map reading). Foreign country so using the smart phone too expensive. We managed by converting long and unfamiliar Hawaiian street and road names into first four letter abbreviations ("turn right on Hoho for Akak Falls") , but will definitely get the GPS option on the car rental next time.

The GPS pronunciation of Kamehameha was pretty funny.

I can second the humpback whales. They were awesome. Jumping baby whales everywhere.
