Hey. I am being placed under pressure to buy a games consol. It's the kids, honest.

I am, though, at a bit of a loss.ni don't know my XBox 1 from Wii from PS4 or whatever.

Has anyone got any strong views about any pluses and minuses of the various options?

First figure out what games you want to play.

Well, kids games really. So, I don't think that the specs need to be the highest of the high. The trouble is whatever game they choose - it will change the next week.

That's not being too helpful Keith. The experts need specifics.

I don't think it really matters too much. Both have tons of games and options... the only real important thing is, as zmama said, if there are any specific games you want that are only on one console.

A genuinely pragmatic option is to get a last generation console, PS3 or XBOX 360, a lot cheaper, huge back catalogue of cheaper games. Negative in the keeping up with the joneses factor, not sure if your kids are old enough for that to matter.

We bought an old PS3 slimline the other day - and have been watching Twin Peaks on it... :D

Thanks all. I think the key thing is interactivity in the sense of how you interface with different controllers etc. I know the wii is pretty good on this but have the others leapfrogged.

I think a lot of people like the Wii for the motion controller, but forget that it lacks in the traditional controller aspect. XBox had Kinect, and a traditional gamepad controller. PS has the Move system, which I don't really think gets a whole lot of love, and a regular controller as a primary input source.

Also to consider is, if you're not a fan of Nintendo-style games (which I'm not - I despise Mario almost as much as Disney's vomitous sociopathic duck) you'll be happier on one of the other two systems, where you're much more likely to find something more innovative (Little Big Planet series is pretty decent, for example).

There are age appropriate games for kids on all the systems. Less so with games aimed at more mature ages for the Wii. As mentioned above, both MS and Sony have exclusives. Nintendo is even more exclusive than both put together.

DISCLAIMER: I have a PS3, and an original XBox. Even though I generally dislike most of what Sony does in other areas, I prefer their consoles.

I prefer PC.

That wasn't all helpful though.

Kinect is garbage.

Get an old Wii. Games are cool, especiually the guitar hero ones. There's no greater thing on earth than getting beating up by your kids playing guitar hero. "Hey, I can play it on a real guitar" - yawn!
