tie-breakers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_2014#Format)

The ranking of teams in each group is based on:

Points in all group matches, with 3 points awarded for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.
.
Goal difference in all group matches
Goals scored in all group matches
.
Points in matches between tied teams
Goal difference in matches between tied teams
Goals scored in matches between tied teams
.
Drawing of lots

FIFA-style, GROUP Goal Diff then Scored are taken into account BEFORE recurring to head to head records

MoSe

according to the above rules

Group A
IF MEX-CRO draw, CRO would go to 4pts with a +2 GD
in such case, should BRA lose vs CMR (!), they'd stay wtih 4pts and GD down to +1 (or worse) and they'd be OUT
Of course I doubt they even give odds in betting sites for BRA losing vs CMR...
If BRA draw, they're qualified
- winning the group if the other match draws too
- as runner-up behind the team winning the other match
but go figure:
even if BRA win, MEX could still win the group if they beat CRO with a margin greater by 2 (Bra 1-0, Mex 3-0), or greater by one and scoring 3+ more goals (Bra 1-0, Mex 4-2)
more likely, Bra will beat CMR and win the group, and CRO need to beat MEX to snatch 2nd place from them

Funko
19-06-2014, 08:40:01
I think Mexico Croatia will be close, I slightly favour Croatia.

MoSe
19-06-2014, 08:44:17
in Group B, NED have GD+5 while CHI +4
they're both qualified in any case, but CHI need to beat NED in last match to win the group
CHI needed 2 more goals vs Spain (4-0) to take the provisional group lead, and they were almost there, but missed 3-4 big chances when they were already 2-0

MoSe
19-06-2014, 08:51:16
CHI need to beat NED

BTW, I thought Ned Beatty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ned_Beatty) had died, but he's 77 and alive and still playing
:cute:

MoSe

jokes apart, the orange struggled vs Australia, and without Van Persie (suspended) should they lose vs CHI, they'd end to meet Brazil in 1st KO round!
(ok, that was anyway the likeliest prediction from the start, but after Spain collapsed I figure everybody thought Holland would take their place)

Funko
19-06-2014, 09:14:12
And probably beat them unless the referee helps them.

you're very often right, but not always...

not scoring, yes but => 0-0
then you hugely support Italy who'll eke a lastditch draw vs CRC with a nonexisting penalty

then you crash 3-0 CRC while we draw again vs uru, and you pass by h2h match tiebreaker
:D

I also forsee England to dominate the match without scoring... then Suarez dives and wins a penalty in the 89th minute for the win.

That would be a good way to go home no? :p

Third time lucky:
England will face Uruguay having lost their last two finals matches,
their 2-1 defeat by Italy coming four years after they were swept aside 4-1 by Germany on 27 June 2010.
The bad news for their next opponents, however, is that the 1966 champions have never lost three consecutive World Cup outings.

Well I thought it would be a free kick.

If Suarez starts and is playing on 89 mins I'll be very surprised, considering he managed 0 mins vs Costa Rica.

They're saving him just so he can ass rape England in the 89th minute. Then Liverpool have to be saddled with the most hated player in England and it ruins their season and Liverpool dies. The whole city. The End.

no, I just wanted to put things in the right perspective, and find absurd all the praise he gets

he's physically above average, decent skills, but not the quickest, falls asleep often and normally the defenders catch him up and take the ball away.
Once in ten he puts in a tremendous shot or a good header, but then I say, his standards are the 9 times in ten when he doesn't.

*Ger need just a draw, but they should normally beat USA despite the latters great WC so far
in case of USA 0-1, Gha need a 2-1 ...or Por would need a 4-0 and this I find frankly unlikely

MoSe

ITA v URU is 'de facto' like a Round of 32 KO play-off, as 1 and only 1 of them will qualify, regardless of the other group D match result

there are other h2h matches for 2nd place, but none is a true KO

MEX v CRO, *in theory* they could both qualify, in case Bra crashes vs eliminated CMR
GRE v CIV, *in theory* they could both go out, in case of a big win by JPN over COL
- CIV 0-0, JPN need 2-0 or 3-2 ; GRE up to 2-0, JPN just any win
RUS v ALG, *in theory* they could both go out, in case of a big win by KOR over BEL (and that's the most unlikely)
- RUS 1-0 up to 3-2, KOR need 2-0 ; ALG 0-0, KOR need 3-0

NOTE that 6 teams (NED, CHI, COL, CRC, ARG, BEL) have already qualified, but none is math sure of 1st place yet

and BRA, FRA, GER, notwithstanding a more or less comfy group lead, could still in theory go out
for instance:

ECU-FRA 4-0 & SUI-HON 5-0 :D
GER-USA 0-1 & GHA-POR 4-0
MEX-CRO 0-1 & BRA-CMR 0-3, but also just MEX-CRO 0-0 & BRA-CMR 0-1 !

while I was busy posting the Players DB,
group G matches got underway

POR already ahead few minutes ago, thanks to Boye OG (goofy clearance on Veloso cross)
with GER-USA still 0-0, and a current -3 GD, this is far from enough yet

MoSe
26-06-2014, 17:13:14
with a draw GER and USA would indeed both qualify keeping positions
USA coach was formerly GER coach, and current GER coach was his assistant
Klinsmann assured tho that his team won't play for the draw but will aim for winning the match (and thus the group) anyway

in case tho GER prevails as odd and team strength would suggest
with GER-USA 1-0 the americans would keep an even GD and 4 goals scored
to equal 0 GD, POR who are currently winning should score 3 more, ending 4-0
in such case they'd qualified having scored 6 goals
USA 0-2 and POR 3-0 would do the same
with USA 0-3 and POR 2-0 they'd have to draw lots instead

otoh GHA would need to comback now to win 2-1
in such casw (USA 0-1 & GHA 2-1) they'd have same GD and qualify on goals scored

summary:
even if GER scores 1, USA qualification would still be pretty safe

should instead eventually GER go down 1-0, they'd only have to "fear" a POR 7-0 or GHA 5-1 before they'd be out! :D

MoSe
26-06-2014, 17:46:33
GER gained lead with usual Mueller at 55'
GHA equalised with Gyan at 57'

this means GER secured group win
and as explained above, that GHA need now just one goal to qualify at USA expenses

out of 6 South American teams only ECU failed to qualify
and they had several chances to beat FRA (OK, FRA had even more :), but still Ecu could have won)

imho the red card for A.Valencia was RIDICULOUS
and later on Digny who caused the sending off, committed a clearly deliberate, almost defiant clipping foul and didn't even get booked

MEX, CRC and now USA qualified! 3/4 with only HON missing out

all Asian teams bottomed their groups. last one KOR will hardly avoid the same fate

as for Africans, only Nigeria qualified, Ivorians were almost there but got out at 93'
Ghana showed they'd deserved much more but ended with 1pt, and CMR even worse with 0
as for Algeria tonite, well they'd need to keep a draw vs Russia.. not favorites, but not doomed

so, Algeria eliminated Russia

this makes two african teams, both in the same quarter
probably neither will reach it, tho

6 Eur
5 S.Am
3 N.Am
2 Afr
0 Asia

European teams are still the most numerous, despite what looks like a "home-bias" success by both american confederations

2 matches after 1-1 at 90' went to extra time, both goalless
1 almost did :), but the 1-1 only lasted from 88' to 94' (and 2' were spent in arguing and preparations since the penalty foul occurred at 92' :))

What do you mean with 'leading'?

MoSe
08-07-2014, 11:00:41
those who lead the ranking of going out at 1st round, those who went out at 1st round the most times....
sorry, trying to be concise leads to obscurity for me :D

for now I went as back as '66 to make Fist happy ;)

8 goals in "TWO" SF matches :p it's a high since '82
otoh just 5 in QF is a tied low with '02 (which had also the lowest scored in SF)

bold = updated this WC
Final Four

in 20 WC Finals (counting also 1950 Uru-Bra as such), there have been 40 contenders, but only 12 different teams**, and 8 different winners*

Top 3 associations won 65% WC, and occupied more than half the Finals spots (21/40, again 65% counting all time 4th ARG), and 40% the Semifinals (32/80)

*of the 8 associations having won a WC, Germany was the only one with more finals lost than won
After yesterday, they left the singular honor to Argentina :D

** of the 12 associations having played a final, 7 have done so at least once in last 4 WC, with Spain sole appearance being a spike (now gone? ;))
the other 5 instead haven't played one after '66, that is 12 WC (at least) without a Final (just one Semi in that time for Eng, Swe, 2 for Uru)
