0 degrees F = the freezing point of water, ice and ammonium chloride, if you get it slightly wrong
100 degrees F = body temperature, if you get it slightly wrong, or maybe you have a fever
212 degrees F = an arbitrary, yet pointless 180 degrees over 32 degrees

Quaint, yet archaic. Like measuring velocity by furlongs per fortnight.

Basically Fahrenheit was a doofus.

Asked by board member Hank Nordhoff, a San Diego businessman, where the water will come from to bail out small systems, Croyle said he's working on it.

"You are going to get it wherever you can get it," he said.

Retorted Nordhoff: "That's a frightening reply."

Croyle cited the possibility of new pipe connections to other water systems and trucking in water.

The Mad Monk
06-02-2014, 19:32:30
They've frozen four times this year -- this house isn't made for these temperatures -- but PVC piping means they don't break. Not even a trickle.

Oerdin
06-02-2014, 20:50:42
Can't they insulate the pipes or something to prevent them from freezing? Put thick insulation on them and bury them under the ground then install one of those water recirculation systems which keeps moving water around in the pipes so it doesn't freeze. An added benefit to those recirculation systems is you turn on the hot water and the water is instantly hot without having to wait a few seconds for the water to warm up.

Lurker
06-02-2014, 21:13:31
Expect your electric bill to feel the pain from those, however. We have it and I'm pretty sure it is a major contributor to the monthly bills, especially in winter. Nice but not sure it's worth the cost (except of course when it stops pipes from freezing).

Yes, but there's no insulation on the outer wall and it's leaky. So far it hasn't been worth the time and money to fix because cracking the faucet is always enough.

...unfortunately, sometimes I'll get up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water...

Ours froze where it comes into the house, through a barely heated utility room off the garage. It had pipe insulation but froze anyway. Got it thawed and fixed and shoved more insulation behind the pipes (copper). I have a safe heater in there now to turn on if the temps go down to -25C again.

That's disappointing but at this point we'd take the package deal. Even with a modest amount of rain so far this year we're still in a bad drought only now instead of being the worst drought in 150 years it is only the worst drought in 100 years. That's progress of sorts, I guess, but not enough of it.

The Cryptkeeper Five - Incorruptible: The Death of Hope

This god damn winter has lasted too god damn long
When black trees whisper, whip, whistle and they taunt
A crow calls the murder to the street to pick bones clean of meat
When tears are all that warm this face and show just how I'm feeling

All I've seen is blue, black and grey
For the past eleven years

This god damn winter has lasted too god damn long
My finger tips to hips, my lips have gone completely numb
Jack Frost chased all the rats in home, they've devoured all that I love
Sentiments of fond memories, some how it don't mean shit to me

And I don't know if I'll ever feel like I did again
For a short time I was happy and you could catch me smiling
When all you love has dripped from your veins onto a dirty floor
Take a cold look and remember 'cause I'm what you came here for

And I don't know what went wrong
But it's been coming on for long

This god damn winter has lasted too god damn long
When dead things bleed rest assure they're more then unresolved
I've fallen on darker days, these sores won't heal and I tounge the pain
Gripped tight like it's my saving grace, count you blessing 'cause I'm negative

Another disappointingly bright and sunny day. It was supposed to rain today, for only the second time all season (which is supposed to be our rainy season), but so far not only is there not a drop but there isn't even a cloud. They were saying it was supposed to start raining this afternoon and not stop until Saturday sometime dropping 1-2 inches but I will believe that when I see it. Up in the central coast they're down 20 inches so far under average.

It has gotten so bad that farmers are now writing off their entire crops as failures and the government has ordered some heavy water using industries (like beer brewing) to cut back. The beer makers are saying they could use ground water to make up the difference but ground water usually has lots of dissolved minerals in it and, apparently, good beer needs low mineral content water so ground water would either have to under go expensive conditioning to remove minerals (and then put the amount you do want back in) or else inferior beer will be produced. Damn it. I was drinking beer to do my part to conserve water.

This god damn winter has lasted too god damn long

Around here it is the year without a winter. Near summer like weather all winter long and that really isn't a good thing. With this record drought and temperatures being so much higher than normal we can expect an epic fire season this year. Come summer time expect to see pictures of flames racing across hillsides in California. This really isn't good especially since people like to live on hillsides (for the views) and because they're surrounded by all that highly flammable trees and brush.

So the best beer is made with rainwater. What?

Funko
28-02-2014, 09:44:08
Well, normally river water? Most British breweries are (traditionally) by rivers. (these days I think many use Eau de Tap) The mineral content thing is a bit of an oversimplification. It might be that the composition of the groundwater where Oerdin is has too much of certain minerals, you need some minerality in the water. Decent summary here:

http://www.dcu.ie/~oshead/BE401/brewing/lecture2.pdf

Works the same in wine. If you have white wine from the slopes of Etna you can taste the minerality the vines have pulled from the ground water. Same in Verdecchio from the limestone hills.

In some wine styles it can be seen as a good thing, in beer generally not so.

Cold? Today is the coldest day in the last year and it is in the mid 50's. At least there has been a good amount of rain (and it is still raining now) but supposedly we'd need 12 more storms just like this to make up for the rain which didn't fall but normally would have. I don't see it happening. Not this late in the rainy season.
