... inventing the bedroom tax.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/patrick-butler-cuts-blog/2013/jan/16/welfare-reform-bedroom-tax-policy-that-has-no-logic

Btw, 20 billion pounds für 5 Million households in housing subsidies? Ouch.

For how many bedrooms do you pay tax?

It's not really a tax.

It's a cut in benefits for anyone who has 'spare' bedrooms in the house they are living in, if they receive housing benefit.

What do the changes mean?

The size criteria in the social rented sector will restrict housing benefit to allow for one bedroom for each person or couple living as part of the household, with the following exceptions:

Children under 16 of same gender expected to share
Children under 10 expected to share regardless of gender
Disabled tenant or partner who needs non resident overnight carer will be allowed an extra bedroom

Cue hundreds of stories of disabled children who currently have and need their own room being forced to move because they can't afford the place they currently live.

Or couples who have two rooms, generally because one of the couple is disabled and needs the extra space being forced to move.

It's absolutely outrageous. Hitting the poorest hard just to claw back a tiny bit of money. It'll probably end up costing more in additional social support services.

It's a bit odd; so when we have parents, son, daughter, that's

- 2 bedrooms until one kid is 10;
- 3 bedrooms when one kid is 10?

So take a 3 bedroom flat/house, take out one wall, and put it back in when the older kid is 10 years old?

Yes exactly. It's insane. And might cost more.

They are also suggesting paying housing benefit into benefit recipients bank accounts rather than direct to landlords.

But unsurprisingly this increases the amount of rent arrears to get and as most of the landlords are local councils it directly hits local council income. (already proven in the trial areas)

They are utterly retarded this lot. Determined to cut stuff whether or not it makes any sense financially.

Seems to suffer from a classic design flaw. If you subsidise tenants, you'll drive rents up. The money is better used for old-fashioned social housing.

Yeah, because they sold off so much of the social housing there isn't enough so they need to have a system that allows benefit recipients to rent privately as well as from social housing.

And now housing costs are so high here that they can't afford to purchase/re-purchase social housing and none of our parties seem to want to build more.

Oh and the benefit is paid by central government and the social housing is controlled by local government. To reduce efficiency further.

Well, only the diving poor will be able to sleep under underwater bridges. Sounds like a solution your current government would endorse.....

They are trying to help these people get jobs, by taking all their money and making them homeless.

Of course they are also making sure there aren't any more jobs or economic growth with their crippling economic policies.
