I thought it was the difficult third album. Or is that novel?

The first album seems to be easy

The first album is easy because you have all the songs you wrote whilst you were trying to get signed. The second album is tricky because you have to follow up your excellent debut but you haven't got a couple of years worth of songs to include so you have to write a whole album of new tracks. By album 3 you are more experienced at that process so you can do it better.

What about the 22. album?

Everyone who's produced more than a score of albums has fizzled out into complacency and boringness, with very few exceptions- Dylan, Possibly Neil Young...

Zappa did some great stuff before he died.
But I guess his 22. album was around 1979 ...

Johnny Cash's last 3 albums were also pretty good.

A score being 20 albums? I'm not surprised!
