a camera. My old 2007 Samsung phone now takes a whole day to charge. I figured that I should replace it with an actual camera since that was all I was using it for.

However, I have no idea what to look for in a camera. I looked through Amazon and just confused myself more.

I'm not looking to spend more than 120ish pounds.

~$240 price range will be hard to fit into a good camera but a cheap camera would be easy. Honestly, if I was in the market for the best low end digital point and shoot camera I'd look at either a Sony Cyber-Shot or a Cannon Power Shot.

Both would likely be in the $250-$400 range depending on which model but you might be able to find a discounter over there with a low mark up. Failing that if you're also in the market for a new phone then upgrading to a Android phone would still give you a decent digital camera.

I'd go with the Sony though it's slightly out of your budget. Maybe a second hand one could be found on Ebay or Craigslist?

15-03-2012, 08:41:25
If it's just a little camera we've got a little Samsung which is quite nice. It's an older version of this one, which has better features.

15-03-2012, 08:41:34
(but I use my phone much more than the camera)

SONY Cyber Shot DSC-W570
cheap (less than 100 euros) the lens is brilliant
16.1 Mega Pixels
5x Optical Zoom
25mm Wide angle lens
Sweep Panorama
720p HD Movie Recording
Optical SteadyShot Image stabilization

bought that one a year ago and the pics beat our professional camera we have at the office

15-03-2012, 11:01:46
plus it fits underneath the stall doors in public restrooms much more easily

15-03-2012, 11:47:06
and you can easily attach it on the point of your shoe, don't forget that MDA

15-03-2012, 17:16:41
mr_B's camera choice sounds best :)

15-03-2012, 18:25:09
I had looked at the new Nokia Lumia for phone/camera but it was way out of my price range. From the looks of it, cameras still take better photos if I compare the megapixels (I assume that is what "mp" stands for?)

Had another friend recommend Pentax E90.

I looked for the Canon PowerShot - but there are so many different versions. How do you know which one is good?

15-03-2012, 18:28:20
That is to say - How do you know that SONY Cyber Shot DSC-W570 is better than a Sony DSCW530 Cyber-shot or Sony DSC-W380B Cyber-shot?

16-03-2012, 08:31:46
This might help:

If it helps the W570 seems to crop up on lots of these kinds of lists, haven't seen the other Sonys on them.

Okay - will listen to Mr. B....c...g....

but new question!

Is amazon the best place to get electronics? Or is there somewhere else that is better for me to go (in England or a website).

20-03-2012, 08:57:02
amazon is generally very good, and well priced.

ebuyer can be quite cheap for some things. Comet have surprisingly had a bit of a resurgence recently. They are quite good now.

21-03-2012, 02:47:25
I might just get it from sony's website.

ebuyer and comet didn't have it (from what I could see) and Sony was selling it cheaper than any seller on amazon.

Before I do it, does anyone have any bad experiences or warnings about buying things directly from Sony?

21-03-2012, 08:30:22
I have never bought from them because normally they are more expensive.

21-03-2012, 16:56:00
hmm... you can't order it straight from Sony it seems. You have to select a Sony store to send it to you. Unfortunately, all the sites in England say the camera is temporarily unavailable.

(I'm striking out today. Placebo tickets in London are also sold out)

I ended up getting it at Amazon. Sorry about the fuss - I'm a picky buyer. :(

21-03-2012, 19:22:05

I went to purchase on amazon and all of a sudden, the one I chose wasn't there. They ran out. :violin: They have them for more expensive prices. I might just wait and see what happens if more come in.

22-03-2012, 08:35:41
Damn, if only you were a more impulsive purchaser! ;)

22-03-2012, 09:14:51
I would like to see you buy a beer.

22-03-2012, 09:21:33
Which beer do you think is the best?

Cheshire Cat
22-03-2012, 09:26:43
easy: Best Bitter
it's in the name...

22-03-2012, 09:41:57
The best beer is a Guinnes but then the one that is not that bitter, with a not that stiff foam tralala.

what's the best place to buy a beer?

Cheshire Cat
22-03-2012, 09:59:41
wise choice:
stiff foam makes stiff upper lip

22-03-2012, 10:08:29
Mr_B you need to come to Reading soon so we can have a stout tasting session. I will show you some stouts that are even nicer than guinness.

22-03-2012, 10:10:14
Best place to buy beer is Reading Beer Festival on Star Wars Day this year.

22-03-2012, 10:59:16
Alec Guinness Day?

I think even Murphy's is nicer than Guinness.

22-03-2012, 12:20:47
o/c (brewed in County Cork where the H family are from o/c)

22-03-2012, 12:57:01

IIRC I liked Beamish better than Murphy, albeit 'twas harder to find
tried a few english stouts too (Sam Smith's, Fuller's, Belhaven? memories are confused)

but there's none like Guinness, the best one I got at the brewery pub itself

one of the top rated by BA is for SP

Funko's favorite one must be this:

22-03-2012, 12:59:19
My brother in law (ex- in law, I guess) is from Cork.

Didn't Guinness or Murphy's start up a UK manufacturing site, or move their manufacturing entirely?

Also: Cameras good! Listen to Mr_B

My first stout was a Guinness in Glasgow with some of my wife's friends. Bitter. After drinking a few Murphy's (less bitter) a couple of years later, the Guinness was much more palatable. I guess I'm a weakling American that had to train up to Guinness. I like both now, but generally will take Murphy's if I can get it.

also, Celebrator Dopplebock, I must find it again, it's like drinking candy, and you get a goat toy on every bottle

22-03-2012, 13:28:29
The brewery pub now is a bar at the top of the Guinness Storehouse. You go up 7 floors of Guinness malted barley, hops, guinness history and advertising and then at the top you are in a bar with a 360littleo view of Dublin and they give you your 'free' pint of Guinness, and after an hour or so of build up it is amazing, and perfectly served.

I had this one the other day (in bottle) and it was absolutely stunning.

22-03-2012, 13:29:21
Guinness used to have an English plant, but now all our UK Guinness is brewed in the new Dublin plant.

22-03-2012, 13:30:18
And Murphys (and Beamish) Are both less bitter than Guinness, yes.

22-03-2012, 16:48:14

Can someone register

And have them have an argument?

brilliantly brilliant

22-03-2012, 21:38:43
I looked at the bottom of the thread first and was dumbfounded - how did we get to beer. Now I get it.

I'm not much of a beer drinker - so I don't buy it. But I do like Guiness and Murphy's.

Cider is good too.. Strongbow. I gave up on fizzy stuff awhile back though. Makes me feel big and bloated.

I've been buying wine and hard liquor. I generally go for reservas as old as I can find them (in the grocery store - found a 2007 once!) from Spain or Chile. I also like Cabernet Sauvignons (sp?).

ALso I get Smirnoff vodka but I think I'd like to try Absolut.
Tullamore whiskey

I drink rum but normally someone else buys it...

I think I've developed into a picky buyer because I've always been poor. I want to make sure I'm not wasting money that could go to something better or that I need.

ANyway, ordered it off Amazon. Too impatient to wait for Sony website to have it in stock (at 109 - I thought that was good). Amazon had it for 116.

Going camping tomorrow so I'll get some better pix than my cat....

I noticed that the battery doesn't last long. I'll need to get an alternate. Another thing to be wary of - the charger doesn't hook up well to the wall.

I think most of you have me on FB and should be able to see pictures there...

Battery - not when you are going camping and there is not an electrical outlet for charging.

Cats don't smile ... I want to test the smile feature out. :)

28-03-2012, 10:45:05
Battery might take a couple of full charge discharge cycles to get it's full life.

28-03-2012, 11:13:11
smile feature is amazing, so is the swap for panorama pics
DAMN, I'm gonna buy that camera again this evening
