Arrivederci Fabio

I can't help thinking this is another spectacular own goal by the FA. I think probably John Terry shouldn't be the captain (for all kinds of reasons, I'm not even convinced he's an automatic pick any more) but for the FA to force it without Cappelo's agreement, seems typically retarded by them.

The absolute worst thing now could be Redknapp getting the job and the English media suddenly becoming convinced we'll win the Euros. :o

1. if English can't know what to do with their doubles, why didn't they remove'em from their language altogether?

2. it's Capello, not Cappelo, but you're forgiven for being tottaly doubbles chalengedd, see point 1

3. "arrivederci" means "see you again"... are you sure??? :p

4. Can Spurs' owner lawfully prevent Redknapp to serve as England part-time manager??

While I totally dislike Capello it seems you guys hate him even more :D

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing considering how close the euros are.

3) I'm sure he'll be back in management and playing or watching matches in England at some point.

He's a terrible choice for England manager, not because of footballing reasons, but because England Manager is 90% politics and media relations, which he seems to totally suck at.

I don't think you have to be an English manager but you have to be able to deal with the English press. And experience managing in England would help with that.

as an aside I think Mancini is really starting to get how that works...

(also Arrivederci was picked for it's England football links. ie. it's featured in World In Motion, the Italia 90 song)

Was Mou good at that?

Funko
09-02-2012, 12:12:00
Yes.

He is brilliant at giving the press a story. And journalists love having something to write about. Often he'd say something that made him the story. Which meant the papers were writing about Mourinho, not about his players. So it took the pressure off them to some extent. He does the same in Spain now.

You definitely get a negative backlash from our media against managers who don't help the journalist file an interesting story. And I think it's one of the main reasons he's so quickly linked with any top management job in England, the sports journalists really want him back.

I see. I guess we (italians) are concerned about results more than anything else.
He'd been sacked after the world cup, now seems a bit odd to part ways.

Funko
09-02-2012, 13:57:28
If he won every game 5-0 he could be horrible with the press.

Qualification has been good but the World Cup was horrible. They extended his contract just before the world cup meaning he was too expensive to sack after it. FA Morons again.

Fistandantilus
09-02-2012, 14:36:17
IIRC it was the FA to insist on extending the contract before the WC?

Funko

jj hence me saying FA Morons again.

Think there was rumours of an Italian club wanting him.

Totally true.

Funko
10-02-2012, 10:49:47
During that period we've mostly been one of the top ten teams in the world, and we've never been in the top 3 or 4. and our tournament performances have reflected that mostly qualifying relatively comfortably and mostly going out in last 16/last 8 stage.

Aside from the time we didn't qualify we have been performing consistently highly despite having all those different managers. We just haven't had an exceptional side, like the 90s France team or the current Spanish team.

Arguably we've never had an exceptional team.

Talking about late 90s France 98/00.

What did Italy win in the 90s?

Funko

Germany and Brazil had good teams in the 90s too, but they always do.

Mr. Bas

Even we had a good team, but actually winning something is too much to ask apparently.

Good != Exceptional

Funko
10-02-2012, 17:20:24
My criteria for exceptional was "Won 2 major tournaments"

(or maybe won one and got to a final)

Mr. Bas
10-02-2012, 17:45:33
We should've won at least one. I'd argue we were the best team in Euro 2000, and were just as good as France and Brazil in 1998. The '92 and '94 teams weren't too shabby either. But it doesn't matter in the end, because we won fuck all.

in Volley, everything (except the olympics)

From 1989 to 2005 Italy wins 3 World Championships -1990, 1994, 1998 – (after these victories Italy was appointed “Team of the century”), 1 World Cup, 6 European Championships, 8 World League and 3 Olympic podiums (silver medal Atlanta ’96, bronze medal Sidney 2000, silver medal Athens 2004).

anyway:

- we didn't win anything because we hadn't an exceptional team
- I define exceptional a team who won 2 major tournaments

... England Manager is 90% politics and media relations...

Is Hodgson good at that?

Funko
30-04-2012, 07:49:33
Better than Harry.

He's got plenty of international experience. Reading up in wikipedia today I came up with this:

At their peak while managed by Hodgson, Switzerland were rated the third best international side in the world, according to the FIFA World Rankings.[5]

I'd forgotten how well he did with them.

He's got international experience and been successful.
He's English.
He's managed in lots of different countries, and been successful.
He's managed in European competition.
He actually wants the job.

What else could you want in a candidate, and who else has got better qualifications?

Funko

I hope they keep Pearce as assistant manager and continue to groom him as the next senior manager.

Harry is thick as pigshit, corrupt as hell, and has won only 1 major trophy in 30 years and bankrupted the club in the process.

He may be "a great motivator" but see Kevin Keegan for details of what happens when that's all you have.

Fistandantilus

 some loathing for arŕ.

I don't want anyone, was just curious if Roy has a good relationship with the british media. I only know him for his spells in Italy which weren't successful (convincing Moratti to get rid of Roberto Carlos cause he coundn't defend wasn't excatly a bright decision) but he was a good guy and liked him when he managed Inter.

Funko
30-04-2012, 14:32:18
Yeah. He's generally well liked if underappreciated? He was incredibly hot prior to Liverpool job but our media is notoriously fickle.

He arguably left Inter better than he found them.
