That's extremely typical of the creationist home schooler "text books". That shit should seriously be outlawed (as official educational textbooks) as should home schooling.

And before anyone says it, no, home schoolers do not get better test scores than their peers. Once you control for economic status and race they score well below students of the same social class and race. Home schooling supporters love to say "They score higher on average then public school kids" but this lumps students from 50 states, with 50 entirely different systems, and doesn't control for a whole host of factors preventing an accurate comparison. Once we make sure we're comparing apples to apples home schoolers are exposed for the rubes they've always been (as you can see in the article in the OP).

I know plenty of people that home school because the available public schools are abysmal. Averages be damned, outlawing it condemns some kids to ignorance.

so it comes down to deciding which kids should be ignorant

I'd be perfectly willing to allow it to continue to go on IF the proposed teacher has a teaching credential and can pass a teacher's exam; not to mention the students need to be routinely tested (not just once per year) to insure they're actually being educated. Honestly, in this state you can freely pick any school with in the district (positions for the best schools are competitive and who gets the spots is based on test scores, extra curricular activities, and if they're a local student [locals get first chance at their neighborhood school but any remaining spots are competitively based]). Heck, even religious private schools are better because they're at least required to meet state standards & the teachers have to have the necessary qualifications. Home schooling is the worst possible solution because it achieves the worst results.

All the people I know that homeschool are Ph.D.'s, veterinarians, and pharmacists. Skewed demographic, I guess.

Never let facts get in the way of a good generalisation.
