Wales' soccer World Cup hopes could be sunk - because of a student from the Faroe Islands.

As revealed last month, Gary Speed’s team could be plunged into Pot Six - the bottom pot of seeds- for the Brazil 2014 draw.

But what has emerged is how in-depth statistical work from a youngster has hindered Wales’ hopes of avoiding being bracketed next to Andorra, San Marino and Liechtenstein.

Jakup Emil Hansen, studying for a masters in political science, wrote to the Faroe Isles FA after spotting Wales were erroneously put above them in the Fifa rankings.

Hansen pored over the complex seeding system and calculated the Faroes have 0.07 points more than Wales.

The Faroes FA wrote to Fifa and the rankings were changed, placing Wales below their new rivals.

The Fifa ratings, coupled with results in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, will be used to determine the World Cup seeds.

Guess we've finally hit rock bottom! Sunk by a snot nosed statto from the Faroes! :D

And there's more:

I won’t be popular in Wales, admits Faroe Islands student

The Faroe Isles student who has condemned Gary Speed’s Premier League stars into the bottom pool of World Cup seeds has admitted: “I won’t be popular in Wales... but this is something I just had to do.”

Intensive mathematical research conducted by cyber warrior Jakup Emil Hansen highlighted a flaw in Fifa rankings and ensured little Faroes were placed above Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and co.

The two nations appear to be almost neck and neck for the last place in pot five of seeds for Brazil 2014, meaning the other will be condemned to joining Andorra, San Marino and Kazakhstan in a doomsday draw scenario.

The meticulous calculations of the 28-year-old political science student highlighted how the Faroes should be 0.07 points better off than Wales in the complicated ratings.

He contacted the Faroe Isles FA, who in turn spoke to Fifa. They changed the rankings ... and Wales fear the upshot will be the embarrassment of being stuck in with world football’s minnows for the World Cup draw.

Hansen said: “I know I’m not very popular in Wales at the moment, but this is something I had to do.

“I started looking at this after the Faroe Islands’ magnificent recent win over Estonia. That was a great moment for us and it’s only right Fifa’s rankings are accurate, even if it is to 0.07 of a point.

“Look, I know Wales are the better team.

They have Premier stars in their side, we have players who are part-time.

“If Wales played the Faroe Islands tomorrow they would almost certainly win, I know that. They will go above us again, I’m certain of it.

“But what we have done is maximise what we have.”

He continued: “I’m not an expert with computers, I’m not a mathematician, I’m not even very good at maths.

“But I thought I saw something wrong. I had my computer at home and the calculator on it.

“I am a big fan of the BBC’s Panorama program, which has done so much to expose the corruption in football and, when I started to do my calculations, it seemed to me FIFA were wrong.

“I started to look into it more and found a blogger from Romania who also calculates these things and his sums were identical as mine.

“It took me five hours to do the calculations, which really aren’t that difficult once you know the system FIFA use, but it took weeks to get anything done about it.

“Pressure was put on the Faroe Islands Football Federation, who finally took up the case with FIFA.”

Doesn't really matter where these footballing minnows end up in the qualifying groups to any of the proper nations though does it.

I know Wales aren't that good, but below the Faroes? What the hell?
