Mmmmmm....you've got to break that habit early. We made that mistake with our first, staying with her until she fell asleep. As a result, she started sleeping through the night without waking us up when she was nearly 5.

I had one that nothing worked on ( and shes still a "bad" sleeper) and one that thumb sucking was the trick ( she is still a very good sleeper, and doesn't suck her thumb )

The Shaker
28-05-2011, 13:45:53
Don't ask me, I'm still in sleep deprived hell.
One still sleeps with his mum and feeds all night and has always slept on his stomach or on my shoulder if I keep bouncing.
The other sleeps through maybe 3 nights a week now..and he only started sleeping when we introduced a dummy when he was 1 just to try and retain sanity. Removing it subsequently has proved problematic, but not as problematic as no sleep.

There's some sort of sleep clinic round here, they talk about putting them down , for a minute, then 2 minutes etc still comforting just not picking up Supposedly gets them used to the fact that you are not abandoning them. Apparently it worked for one lot of my friends.

Typically the solution is to try everything. Something will work.....then stop working for no reason just as you think you cracked it. This will happen many times. Eventually once you've been broken the baby will take full control of the household and you will find yourself nothing than an automaton.

Funko
28-05-2011, 15:10:09
Cool, yeah we're trying putting her down, sometimes that's fine and she's perfectly happy for a couple of hours, mostly not. Think time of day doesn't really matter to her, just makes it seem worse for us at night.

Dyl Ulenspiegel
28-05-2011, 15:33:55
Our daughter produced horrible sleep patterns (sometimes just 15 min sleep - 15 min crying and so on) until about 24/30 months old. And she didn't sleep on persons either.

As the Shaker said, we tried everything the smart people and the smart books say. Didn't work.

The one thing that worked somewhat was her ring shaped pillow. She somehow managed to suck on it. It became ugly, but she loved her pillow and was somewhat calmer.

Until her mom was overcome by the urge to wash that pillow. Total setback, and I got the urge to kill her mom.

We managed to replace the pillow with a small hippo soft toy. She still needs the damn hippo to sleep. And her mom knows I'm going to kill her if she washes the damn thing. (well, of course we wash the damn thing, but very... carefully. It must not get 100 % clean).

So try a soft toy for her and let it get as ugly as you can stand.

Oh, almost forgot: congrats you three. :tea:

Ouch... ours has just started sleeping through the night with 2 1/2. Not always, but really getting better.

I guess you also loved the people with their 6 month old babies telling you how they sleep all night and most of the day.

Our youngest did well sleeping in the cot once we'd wrapped him snugly in a soft blanket. Snug = tight enough so he can't squirm and move, and his arms were comfortably restricted, but not so tight it cut off blood :D We referred to him as the "burrito baby".

EDIT: My younger sister, on the other hand, put her first to sleep by sticking the baby in the car and driving around. This turned out to be really really bad, because later the baby wouldn't sleep *at all* without a drive around.

I've been too tired to be safe driving! Had a great midwife visit yesterday, helped with feeding which seems to help sleeping. Fingers crossed!
