SP-IT stands of course for Spain-Italy
:D

looking at BBC sports for an impartial report on the great CL semifinal Barça victory
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/default.stm

I saw at page bottom the Liga and SerieA juxtaposed tables

in Spain they're one matchday behind, so I "backtracked" SerieA to the same # of games played, that is 33

rk team GD Pts team GD Pts
1 Barcelona 71 88 AC Mil 36 71
2 Real Madrid 53 80 Napoli 21 65
3 Valencia 16 63 Inter 21 63

8 Espanyol - 6 45 Palermo - 4 47
9 Mallorca -10 42 Cagliar 1 44

19 Hercules -20 33 Brescia -15 30
20 Almeria -26 26 Bari -28 21

the top 2 spanish clubs combined earned 17+15 = 32 points more than their italian counterparts, in 33 games (that's .5 more ppg each club!)
this is stating the obvious, we know Barça and Real dominate their league much more than it happens in other major domestic leagues in europe.
As Funko pointed out, this is only comparable to the Glasgow teams in Scotland.

What does this say about the relative strength of the rest of the two leagues?
You see that B+R impose their "points tribute" spreading it rather evenly on the rest of the field.
Do they dominate because Liga is relatively weaker compared to SerieA?
Or does the average SerieA team perform domestically slightly better only because they don't have to face any real juggernaut?

The UEFA league ranking says that spanish clubs perfom better in europe than italian ones, but would that be the same if we take out Barça and Real results, and the same in parallel for the best 2 italian clubs in europe?

stay tuned

interesting to observe

away wins are almost equal, 27.35% in SerieA vs 27.27% in La Liga
the difference for home sides is that in Spain they win much more, 52.4% vs 46.1, of course this entails they draw much more in Italy, 25.6 vs 20.3
you might have all expected this, but if you thought that was because of away teams playing passively in defense, it's instead home sides being less audacious and thus succesful

regarding goals, we see the same
they score 2.71 goals per game in Spain, vs 2.46 in Italy
and that's almost entirely due to italian home sides scoring less
home 1.63 vs 1.41
away 1.08 vs 1.05

But.. if you remove Barça and Real goals per game in Spain are much lower??

for a proper stat, I should remove all B+R matches, not just their total stats from the table

for instance, sticking to day 33 in Spain,
the average of goals scored @home by the other-18 lowers to 1.51, but this includes goals scored by o-18@h to away-B+R
considering that if 1.63 was the Liga avg for home scoring, it was also the average for away conceding, and that B+R combined conceded an avg of just 0.76 away goals, you see that if I properly take out of the tally the scores the other-18 got @home vs B+R, that 1.51 would probably rise again

it should be revised reviewing the entitre match tables, it requires too much effort

It is too early in the morning for this kind of stats.
