Hope everything is OK with them.

My other friends live just the other side of Lyttleton Sound (on top of an old volcanic plug), and they say it was terrible, although the worst my mate reports is having to sort out 600 CDs that have fallen off the wall. A cruise liner arrived early morning, so all the tourists will be out and about in Lyttleton and Christchurch.

glad to know it!

:b

(hope Shiny is included in the report)

a recent one, debated here too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_L%27Aquila_earthquake

5.9 Richter, 0.1% casualties in ~300k population (the whole province, 5k sqkm)

http://www.earthquake-christchurch.com/
allegedly 6.3 Richter (although http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/latest.html says 3.7, is it the same quake?)

so far 0.016% in over 400k town inhabitants

more violent, 6 time less victims in proportion....
they must have built much better houses down there

but

IS RUGBY WC AT RISK?????

Glad they're OK. Likewise a few people I know in Chch.

This is really scary stuff! It really brings it home to you when you see buildings you've stood next to reduced to rubble. :(

I was in an 'earthquake' once in Wellington: stuff was shaking and it wasn't very strong - in fact I only figured out it was an earthquake after the event.

Thing is, they're about ready for a really massive earthquake around about now - Wgtn's CBD is essentially land reclaimed from a huge earthquake in the 1850s!

It's not a matter of if, but when...
