Top Gear Sez:

The Ford Focus is one of the most complete cars on the road today. Well designed, well engineered, well built, well priced. It drives superbly, does what you need it to, and won’t break the bank.

(Although apparently the US one is shit.)

it's the new Vauxhall

Why would the US version be significantly different? Serious question because I always assumed that apart from emission stuff the European versions of cars were the same.

Normally, but in this case it's a completely different car made in different factories on different continents.

Besides: No car would be even friendlier.

No particular feelings for Ford either way but the Focus is widely considered to be the best in its class (assuming you don't mind it being ubiquitous).

And it's also one of the cheapest second hand because there are millions of them. It depreciates quickly from new then holds its value the same as the others.

See, sensible and responsible. Mr_B was right! (very rarely)

Scabrous Birdseed
16-11-2010, 10:36:53
You can't buy a car and be responsible at the same time, come on. Possibly if you buy a second-hand car, then scrap it immediately.

Funko
16-11-2010, 10:50:42
Apparently you can produce and run 8 Toyota Hi-Luxes for their entire life for the same energy cost as used by a medium sized dog for its entire life*.

So dog owners are much more environmentally unfriendly than SUV drivers.

And if you have a baby... well, you're a total planet raping bastard!

Dyl Ulenspiegel

Ford owns 8% of Mazda...

Dyl Ulenspiegel
16-11-2010, 20:53:23
How much did they own until 2008?

Does the Mazda3 share a platform with the European Focus?

Asher
16-11-2010, 23:05:53
I don't know or care about the old world. Wake up, World 2.0 is here.

It's highly likely that Ford used Mazda/Volvo components to make their European Focus, as it's far better in quality than the American one, last I heard.

Asher
16-11-2010, 23:06:49
Ford has also never owned greater than 50% of Mazda. So Ford = Mazda is clearly a false statement not only now, but for all time.

Ford owned a controlling stake until 2008, and the two cars share a platform.

But I concede the second point: So you drive a European Ford.

The only Ford part is the transmission. Volvo designed the Chassis and Mazda the engine.

Incidentally, I had to get my entire transmission replaced a year into ownership (under warranty).

Yeah, Mazda 3 is basically a European Focus with a different shell.

Same floorplan, suspension and most of the engines are the same.

Which is why the Focus is good, and it's almost meaningless these days to dismiss whole brands of cars, so many of them are a mishmash of many different companies parts.
