View Full Version : I have a proposal

28-09-2010, 09:40:59
That I've been working on for nearly a year. Still at it, yes. I scratched the old one and started over (in June when Manchester approved my idea).

However, I'm down to revising small things. So.. I was wondering about the use of Roman numerals.

My ph.d. work will have 2 very distinct parts: a critical section and a creative section.

Should I separate these parts in the proposal with Roman numerals or use a transition so that the proposal is seamless?

Separate them as
Book I A Critical Analysis of ...
Book II A Fundamental Reconstruction of ...

Definitely two parts. But use creative names! In latin. Or musical terms!

28-09-2010, 12:46:58
I. Modest
II. Indecent

Make sure you get at least $1M for the second one... :D

...and some Carolina barbecue sauce with the first.

MDA - I might have to use that as a title of a poem.

Good point in making creative titles Scabrous (Johan). Just have to think of the right ones.

Scabrous Johan. Catchy.

Roman numerlas give a false pretenx of seriousness and deapth of research. Which of course will have to be there or it will backfire.

04-10-2010, 14:52:20
do the whole thing in light grey lower-case comis sans. apart from large elaborately embossed golden roman numerals.

04-10-2010, 14:54:33
And a golden head piece of ceasar.

04-10-2010, 20:15:47
How about something Mancunian?

19-10-2010, 08:04:17
So I have finished said proposal. I don't suppose anyone wants to read this lengthy plea and tell me if it is ready to be sent?

19-10-2010, 08:38:55
I don't know anything about proposals so not sure I'd be much use reading it.

I'm going to be writing one (or several) myself this spring, so it would be cool to compare. Bung it my way!

19-10-2010, 10:56:03
I emailed it to: birdseed@loudmedicine.net

Thank you! (I hope it's not crap)

19-10-2010, 19:32:04
Good luck! It's very cool that you are pursuing a PhD in a creative field. If I had the time and money, I would love to go back to school to study an arts subject.

20-10-2010, 08:11:31
Just to annoy Asher?

20-10-2010, 15:07:57
And KH.

17-11-2010, 04:18:14
Sent off the proposal. They didn't make me apply again, just emailed the new one in and used the same batch of reference letters and poems.

So that wait is on.... again.

I think I got in... I'm not 100% though.

I got this email from the English Dept's secretary:

Claire Bharath to me
show details 1:42 AM (20 hours ago)

Application Number: 00469625

Dear Crystal,

I’m writing to advise you that an offer has been sent to you for the Creative Writing PhD. You can visit www.manchester.ac.uk/selfservice to accept or decline the offer using your ID number:______, with your date of birth (ddmmyyyy) as the password unless you have previously changed it.

Should you choose to accept your place at The University of Manchester and require a student visa, please follow - http://www.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/howtoapply/international/pbs/ for further information.

The UK Border Agency requires applicants for student visas to submit a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number, which is provided by The University of Manchester. CAS numbers are only valid for 6 months before the start of your course and will therefore be given to you in April 2011.

A signed copy of your offer letter has been sent to you; please do let me know if you do not receive it in due course.

Best wishes,
Claire Bharath

However, the website to check my app is down until Monday. :vom:
I'm rather shakey right now.

Congrats!

27-11-2010, 06:43:40
so an "offer" means "yes"?

I'm thinking this summer. There is some special number I have to be given by the school to give to British Customs/Visa people. I don't get that until April.

In terms of shutting down my life here and getting it set up there, I almost don't know where to start. I need to start applying for scholarships...loans...

sell my car.. granted I suppose I shouldn't sell that until spring...

I hope I didn't read that email wrong.

28-11-2010, 07:13:47
Muffin, they offered you a spot. It's now up to you whether to accept it or not. You didn't misread it. :)

Shame it's that late, if it was February/March I could have met up with you, cos I'll be in the UK around then. :(

28-11-2010, 11:53:13
I finally got into the website and yup, I'm in. So I accepted the offer. Says I don't start until the 2011/2012 school year. I suppose that means I'll be starting in the summer or fall.

There is no way I could be out there by February or March. All the forms and things I have to apply for take more time than that to go through I would think. Especially scholarships and securing loans.

I have to sell my car, too. Sad - I really like my car.

28-11-2010, 14:34:32
Congrats.

More importantly, what color is your car and does it keep a diary?

The thread is: The Story of the Little Green Car.

Nothing literary masterpiece worthy mind you. Bit it is in green text.

Creative Maths

I read the above as:

Should we give you your CAS before April, it will expire before the start of your course.

the CAS is valid 6 months before the course starts

April + 6 months = October

The course will start in October

Did I misread anything?
Check: had the course started in Sempteber, they'd given you your CAS in March, wouldn't they?

btw, giant mice! (kong-rats)

It might have been something to do with your sentence being virtually unintelligible.

Well, it was missing a comma or two. :cute:

29-11-2010, 11:19:20

But actually I was questioning that it wasn't a literary masterpiece. :(
