I strongly suspect most modern Dutch are too big a pussies to own up to this. The Dutch are just bitches like this.

I was looking up the history of the Spanish Netherlands in wiki and found it. Boring but true.

I kind of like it how the Dutch have recently been voting against Muslim immigration. It seems some would prefer Catholics to more non-European immigration. Or any way in the US the rise of the right is portrayed as a nativist backlash.

Aren't the (illegal) immigrants in the US catholic? Bit ironic for european americans to be labeled nativist?

And about the jews: everyone always talks about the jews, but those germans weren't such sweethearts either, you know.

Actually, the slogan - though not in dutch, I assume - is older and dates back to the union attempts between the catholic and orthodox church in the 15th century. As the remains of the byzantine empire were about to fall to the Ottomans, it was the slogan of the union opponents in the orthodox church.

Drekkus, I forgot why. It was an argument over at a history forum.
