I'm going to Athens for a conference at the end of the month.

What should I do except talk about music?

go to la Plaka and say malaka to everyone

learn simple sentences like
nerò crio parakalò (cold water please)
posso kostitzi? (how much?)
and then look puzzled when they reply you in quick greek

Throw stuff at policemen and time how long it takes for Athens Riot Dog to join in on your side.

get some absolut vodka then head to plaka, ask for the acropolis cliff (go there at a starry night, preferably with a special someone, or go with friends) and climb the sliperry stairs and marvel at the night sky. that is an experience that only the indigenous folk know and when i brought two portugeuse girlfriends there, they were pretty amazed.
the cliff isnt in fact AT the acropolis but it's near and offers a mezmerizing view of athens and i think, it's always open.

search for the herodion theater program and for only 20 euros or something you can watch a play or music show at an ancient theater (also near acropolis). you can buy the tickets there

scroll down the herodus attikon road. stop at the athinaion coffee shop and drink at night while having a great view of the night lighted acropolis. that's an experience money can't buy. step off at the station Thission to do that.

visit the acropolis museum and witness a rampant anti british propaganda :D (from what i've heard)

step off at station monastiraki then just wander around. anywhere. it is a flavor of old town. you'll find tons of stores with whatever you want to buy.

if you were here at 13 and 14 of september you could go to technopolis gazi (station keramikos) and witness the best, fresh contemporary music such as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htm8Gb5gNQA

don't get cabs. or be very suspicious if you do. no course should cost more than 10 (fucking) euros. except from the airport to the town.

Now there's a euphemism I've never heard before :D

Go to "psiri" neighborhood. station monastiraki.
then just walk. whatever strikes your fancy just sit down. order retsina, or ouzo (plomari) and mezedes (meat over the fish variety preferably).

then if you really have the time go to mikrolimano (also refered as turko limano - way off athens, close to piraeus) there's no way to get there except with bus but i don't know which, or with car). walk that road to the end and find the maritime syndicate association that's on the end of the road. just sit on that semi - boat on the middle of the sea and marvel. you'll know when you get there

paiktis

bascially just be drunk and marvel at the sites.
i think that's an ampt descritption of athens.

also, that might sound nationalistic but it's ok for tourists.

got to constitution square( station syntagma, oh the 1 euro metro tickets last for 1.30 hours whatever means of transportation you choose) and take some pictures of the unknown soldier memorial. it is right off the parliement building.

I'd just like to point out that you'll be visisting a city in disssolution. A perky affirmation of its shortcomings. The climate is one of sweet doom. Not that we'll get lost but that we're 100% not europe (a concept I always gave much merit to)
A country of little sqoundrels. But they'll treat you with dignity and honour. Thath they don't save for themselves.
Just be informed that you'll be visiting a country that is on the precipice of collaspe.

Thanks Paiktis! I'll keep it in mind. I'm working on a sort dissolution of the Balkan edge Europe myself. ;)

I'm going to print out a copy of this whole thread and do whatever I can fit in, it's more of a bonus really anyway. :)
