You know what your problem is? You're still an idealist.

Acquire a matt-black tarnish of hardened cynicism, exploit opportunities entirely for your own benefit, and look after yourself- because nobody else will.

So you have a public sector job.
You don't have any work to do there.
You want to write.

So... why do you have to quit the ps job to write?

I could be wrong, but I think the environment is bringing him down.

You need lunatics screaming around you to write? Try public education.

Having worked in the public service myself (twice actually), there's a lot of "empire building" that goes on. And those at the top don't want to let go of their little empires. So getting someone to see the big picture and make things truly streamlined just ain't going to happen, unfortunately.

There may be some reorganisation and rationalisation eventually, but the little empires will still exist and nothing much will change. It's probably true of public service departments everywhere.

And I shall very shortly be laving my 2nd public service job too. :D :bounce:  :bounce:

Also a bit dodgy IMHO having a press division of the public service. Then again as long as there's no strings placed on other media/newspaper companies, I guess it's not so bad. State run press in isolation would be a worry though.

Yes. After a while you just get sick of the bureaucracy, the politics, the bullshit and the dickheads. Not necessarily in that order. :D

Best thing is I have no idea what the heck I want to do when I do resign! I'm just taking a big leap into the unknown. About all I know is I want to travel some. Then maybe consider going to Uni after a suitable amount of "relaxation time" off work. I've been working for over 25 years now (started as a paperboy when I was 10/11ish?), I think I deserve a decent break!

So you're almost an inside informant to the "real press"? How bizarre.

We have something similar to the BBC, called the ABC (creative, I know). But while it is government funded to an extent, I don't think it's public sector as such (pretty sure on that, which of course means that I'll be wrong).

Not sure what I'd like to study the most to be honest, I have about 3-4 ideas. Psychology, Physiotherapy, Early Childhood Teaching or possibly even Environmental Sciences (to work in the field as a National Parks and Wildlife Ranger). Probably the biggest issue is making my mind up tbh.

And yeah, affording it financially isn't a problem. I could actually afford to do a 4-6 year degree without needing to do any part-time work if I wanted to. Though I don't want to waste too much of it, I worked hard (at times) for that money in my 13 odd years in IT. ;)
