I am leaving after the weekend.

The V&A Museum & the Tate Modern are the best two thing in London, and they're both free.

Tate Britain, Natural History Museum and Science Museum are free too, and all also really good.

If the weather's nice the the walk along the South Bank from Tower Bridge up to the London Eye/Royal Festival Hall is really nice, with lots of interesting things going on.

Other than those what kind of things are you interested in? I think just walking around the Barbican complex is great, but I appreciate not everyone is a fan of raw 70s Brutalism.

Tizzy
18-07-2010, 11:34:58
Good luck Jon, London is complicated.

It's fine as long as you can find the tube station.

Greg W
18-07-2010, 12:35:23
I thought the tower of London was cool, if you're into ancient castles, suits of armour and the like.

Also Westminster Abbey (note: Not Westminster Cathedral), just to see thousand plus year old tombs of the old monarchy and a few notables thrown in (Isaac Newton for one, from memory).

Lords is cool if you're into cricket. Which you won't be of course.

The British Museum is cool too. See all the cultural relics the Brits stole from the Greeks, the Egyptians and more.

Of those, Westminster Abbey is free. I don't think the rest are.

Tizzy
18-07-2010, 13:01:52
British Museum is free, I think all the museums are free.

Any other recommendations on hotels?

I do figure I will spend more than I would in the US.

JM
(I am always surprised that other countries don't have 80$ per night decent hotels with plenty of amenities.)

JM^3
21-07-2010, 07:36:47
How easy is it to find free internet in London (how much do I need it to come with the Hotel/Hostel)?

JM

Funko
21-07-2010, 07:51:39
The $80 decent hotel chains here are Travelodge and Premier Inn.

http://www.travelodge.co.uk/
http://www.premierinn.com/

Premier Inn are probably marginally nicer and marginally more expensive, but Travelodge seems to have better locations.

Travelodge Covent Garden is the closest to the pub we're meeting, and right in town, Waterloo, Southwark are on the south bank where the Tate modern etc. are, nice bit of town these days. Tower Bridge is very close to Tower Bridge (as you'd expect) and the Tower of London.

They'd all be decent options.

JM^3
21-07-2010, 08:15:41
Those are more like it, how is London Kings Cross?

Has anyone heard of:
K West Hotel London
the wellington
hampstead britannia

JM

Funko
21-07-2010, 08:56:12
King's Cross is very well located, it had a bit of a seedy reputation but it's been improved a lot recently.

See first paragraph here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_Cross,_London

If you get stuck let me know, can always stay in Reading with Tizzy and me on for some/all of your stay. We're about an hour and a half from Central London door to door, costs about 18 for a day train pass including travelcard you can use around London all day.

By the looks of it the Thursday night might be quite a lot more expensive...

JM^3
21-07-2010, 09:01:26
Yeah, Thursday night is a bit more expensive. I have thought about picking out something for just a night, but looking for a new place would be a drag while I am there.

I found a place that looks a bit beat up but is ~80$ a night. Another place is ~120$ a night, but looks a lot nicer. Trying to decide now.

They are:
The Trebovir Hotel (Earls Court)
Park Lodge Hotel (Hyde Park)

Funko
21-07-2010, 09:08:50
Stay with us Thursday night then get somewhere Friday/Saturday then?

Have a look at the Google Maps reviews for both places. Trebovir has 595 reviews, average 3.5/5 Mainly people complain about the size of the room.

The Park Lodge has 71 reviews 2.5/5.

Looks looks pretty horrible. Having read a selection of the reviews I'd definitely cross that off the list.

Funko
21-07-2010, 09:10:07
Trebovir looks good actually. Might be a decent option. And free internet.

JM^3
21-07-2010, 09:23:46
Thanks a lot Mike. Yeah, the Trebovir looks like a decent option and a bit cheaper than the nice ones you linked earlier. Thanks also for the offer to stay Thursday night, I would definitely take you up on it if I was more sure of what I would be doing Thursday/how trains worked/etc.

I will get in to the Trebovir, seems a pretty safe bet even if it isn't as cheap as the other.

JM

Funko
21-07-2010, 10:24:21
ok cool, sent you a PM with some public transport details anyway.

Lurker
21-07-2010, 14:20:23
Jon, I stayed in or near Earls Court when I went to my first meet, which was in 2005 I think. As I recall, there wasn't much of interest in the immediate area, but it was certainly safe and the tube station is there. It is also not too far a walk to the Natural History Museum, and a little further walk to Hyde Park. There were more interesting pubs and restaurants as you walked east towards Kensington and in Kensington area, but, again, that was within reasonable walking distance.

I can't remember where I stayed, but I think it was on Cromwell Road. One of the franchise motels, but I don't remember which one. Room was small but quiet and it didn't really matter the size b/c I was by myself and rarely there.

Snotty
21-07-2010, 14:58:37
JM is very much in the top 3 of decent and cool posters that I have had the pleasure of meeting, so I would love the chance to meet him again. Thanks for the heads up Funko. I dont know quite how many readys Im going to have for extracurricular activities but I shall see what I can do.

JM is more than welcome to stay at my gaffe, as I have a spare room currently. Its 15 minute walk to the station and 25 minute ride into victoria which costs 7.50 per day to see all of London on a travelcard ticket. Just be sure to not make eye contact with any of the denizens of st mary cray on the way to the station ;) Thats a serious offer as I know you are sound as. I know we have a certain common outlook on life which calms any worry of mine.

Best bros birthday bbq and all, you know ( and if that marissa is as fine as she always was then mmm hmm) I should expect you shall all be plotted at the usual place, but if not if you could drop me a line to know where youre off to.

Yeah, I made it. Didn't have internet working last night.

So far have explored Hyde Park, British Museum (need 2 more long days to do it justice, will change schedule to put in 1 more), and Harrods (wow that place is expensive).

JM

Funko

You could try walking from buckingham palace to the pub later, a good walk lots to see on the way.

JM^3
24-07-2010, 07:58:19
What stop is buckingham palace? I am probably going to head to St Paul's 30 minutes or so.

JM

Provost Harrison
24-07-2010, 08:49:50
It's the Upminster stop. Just walk from there to the pub, it won't take long :D ;)

Seriously though, I've had a double booking and I won't be able to get there, I have to be somewhere else at 3. But if anyone is around in town tomorrow afternoon and wants to meet me for a drink then that is good with me!

Snotty
24-07-2010, 09:05:49
Green park stop, I think. You are probably better served by getting a bus, sit at the top, and see some stuff. You should have a travelcard, or an oyster card, so jumping on the bus isnt going to cost anything if you have the travelcard anyway. buses are a great way to see town imo
