Isn't Rae the female spelling? Or is this a gender confused rat? ;)

You name these things?

Alberta: rat-free region. :b:

It is a myth. I have seen norwegian rats in Edmonton. Pack rats on the eastern slopes of the Rockies... and I think Ken Linsemen once played for the Oilers.

It'd take a miracle to keep brown rats out of sub-polar places where humans live. They're a Darwinian masterpiece.

Rats make good pets though they piss on everything. Luckily they only last a couple of years so you get to be the hero dad for getting them a pet but you know the suckers will kick the bucket shortly.

I admit Alberta is not friendly to immigrants, but your characterization of our Euro brethren is offensive.

I think they mean just Norway rats. Professional hockey playing rats remain welcome.

They (Norway rats) come in on trains and trucks, or they cross the border in a limited area from Saskatchewan.

From memory, provincial wildlife maintain some sort of measures in and around rail yards. They also have a zone on the border with Saskatchewan where they pay local authorities for rat control. They react quite quickly when any are reported.

I just checked. Apparently, the Norway did not come this way until the 1950's. When they showed up the Province started an effort to keep them out. The climate is too cold for them to live in the wild during the winter, so that explains why they wouldn't have been here earlier and they are quite limited in where they can survive. This site says they will go as far as tearing down a building if necessary to get rid of them.

I've seen what might be a rat a couple of times in my time around here.
