I may possibly have mentioned this before. I picked this book up in a charity shop a few years back. It's rather good, an old pelican book, my edition being from 1956. You can see some pics here:

http://www.populuxebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=76_77&products_id=571

Amongst other things it has a picture and some text of the Bergpolder flats in Rotterdam.

Brilliantly my copy formerly belonged to someone at the 'Research Unit on Intellectual Development' in Cambridge.

wow I'm jealous
the Bergpolderflats are from the same architect who did my app.building
Maybe they are also mentioned in your book, they are called the Lijnbaanflats under supervision of van de Broek and Bakema.

that's a piece of gold you've got there Phil

1. FOA

First Of All . . . let me start off by saying . . . this is how it should be used. Can be written to start a sentence followed by a comma.
FOA, let me start off by saying that I regret my past actions and I hope that you are willing to give me a second chance.
first before begin by start first off

fuck off ass. For use in a public setting where profanity may not be appropriate, but you still need to get rid of that annoying person breathing all up in your space.
guy (while breathing down girl's neck): hey there sweetlips, how 'bout you let me check you for ticks?

girl (flinging hair, throwing hand up): FOA!!
fuck off back off step off screw you fuck you eat shit step off i'm doin tha hump

3. FOA
An acronym standing for "Fucking Olympic Asshole." Refers to any of the multitude of non-residents that congregate in a city hosting the Olympic Games, but especially those behaving in an obnoxious manner or disrupting the lives of locals. Less commonly, a person employed in planning or hosting the Olympics. Not to be confused with its homonym standing for "Fresh Off Airplane," although these terms can in some cases correctly apply to the same individual.
"The streets were so choked with FOAs today, it took me an extra hour to get to work."

"Christ, look at all the trash those FOAs left behind."

That is very cool. Not as cool as the Anish Kapoor sculpture/viewing platform London's getting for 2012 though. It looks like a crazy Transformer, or something Venom briefly turns into at the end of Spiderman 3. It's taller than the Statue of Liberty too (though that is disappointingly small in real life).

It looks like a trick, a conjuring act, as if some maverick architect ran off to join the circus, and learned how to balance one building on top of another, possibly while riding a bike.

I hate and love it

Nills Lagerbaak

It'll serve is as a fancy paperweight on an architect's desk and as a large headache to an engineer.
