Anyone seen this? It's a French horror film from 2008 which if you have seen, you'll still be shocked now.

It starts in eye opening fashion, with the sight of a young girl, covered in cuts and bruises, terrorized and traumatised, running half clothed from inside a disused industrial plant. At this stage you can only imagine what she might have endured. The film then jumps ahead 15 years to the girl who still disturbed and mentally unstable goes in search of revenge for those she thinks are responsible. She is accompanied by a fellow female abuse victim, but what they they go on to uncover is more sadistic and disturbing then they could imagine. Where the film goes from there takes you on a real unsettling, soul-crushing, harrowing journey which really engages the mind, keeps you guessing and leaves you wondering where your sympathies with the characters lie at times. There are stages where it resembles Hostel and Saw but without any ounce of a scene where you find yourself gleefully looking at the screen watching puss spurting from eyes in near comical fashion. There are also well-shot scenes where the lead female sees visions of a phantom woman which bear a similarity to Japanese horror. If you are a hardcore horror fan who likes to test yourself and see how much you can stand, this is the film for you. Here's a few quotes which describes it better than moi:

"It is alternatively a psychological thriller, a slasher movie, a monster movie, and a torture porn endurance test. While the story is designed to keep viewers guessing, it’s also determined to challenge our assumptions about what level of on-screen suffering we can find acceptable. In both duration and detail, the violence in Martyrs constantly challenges us. In this respect, the film is unflinching, but hardly single-minded. Throughout the course of the film, gore is used to shock, to gross out, to please aesthetically, to make us squirm, and to make us sympathize with the sufferer." Moviemartyr.com

Intense, disorienting, unsettling, upsetting, polarising - Martyrs is all these things but it is also intelligent, moving and strangely uplifting. If you want to be put through the wringer by a film, make it this one.

If you have seen this (it won't be on the BBC chaps) say what you thought.

Sounds well intense!

Have you seen Irréversible? Another French movie where you question why it is that you are watching it, or even who could get away with actually making it. Stars Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel.

Le temps détruit tout - Time destroys everything.

The main review on IMDB for Martyrs compares its style to Irréversible.

Talking of other difficult to watch films, have you seen Man Bites Dog? Another one in the style of feeling vaguely ashamed that you're actually watching it - worse yet if you actually enjoy it!

No. Haven't seen those but guess i'll be checking them out. I'm a member of that Lovefilm DVD rental thing and need to add some more titles. I've seen Irreversible mentioned in comparsion to Martyrs (and if it's got Monica Bellucci in it's worth watching anyway!) I gather Audition shocks too and i saw Requiem For A Dream too which, although not a horror, still spirals depressingly downwards.
