They fed him some of that rotten fermented herring and he was never heard from again. :(

It fermented into 90 proof fish stink and he's back on the bottle!

Lol

I still haven't tried fish, although everyone seems to eat it.

My group seems really friendly. Some other people too. I feel distinctly the fact that I don't speak the language, I would really like to.

Most people speak enough english that I can interact with them.

It has been rainy, except for a few hours. Not cold yet.

I have walked 5-25km per day.

Yeah, I spent the day wandering around Uppsala. It might have been over 25km, although I did spend some time in shops/etc.

I am right now trying to find an apartment. Living out of a hostel sucks.

Currently I am looking at blocket.

Swedish craigslist, pretty much.

I've got some friends in Uppsala, I could check if they know anyone with an appartment to rent out.

There seems to be lots of hiking to do. I will have to look into that, I have been missing that on the east coast.

Should be, although the best trails are up north and only really accessible from may to october.

Make sure you speak really, really loudly in English and constantly tell people it sucks that things are different from America. ;)

Oh yes. If they don't know what you are saying it is true that the best course of action is to say it louder.

It's Sweden. We watch so much American TV that anything with an American accent is understood completely, at any speed.

I've talked to one of my friends on Facebook, and she said sometimes the departments have some housing systems, but I guess you've already checked that. But just in case, what department are you in? Physics? Chemistry? I couldn't remember.

She also suggested using Couchsurfing while looking for somewhere to stay, I'm not sure if you're familiar with the site, but it's a website where people offer strangers a bed or couch to sleep on, with the idea of using the same system when they themselves are out travelling. It's a very pleasant community (I've used it a lot myself), very prevalent in Uppsala as I understand it, and should help you with getting contacts of nothing else.

Physics, and I think they are paying for me at the hostel. The other housing is full for a month or more.

I have 3 suitecases, and don't want to be moving them around every couple of days, so couch surfing isn't interesting to me.

I guess I could move all but one to my office, but that is a bit shady.

Jon, this is important, how many outrageously hot blondes have you seen so far?

JM^3

Some.

It is winter, so a lot are bundled up. Additionally, I am in the Physics/Chemistry building and mostly up in an office away from where the students are.

I hope to see many more.
